Geo. Emory McGee [George Emery Magee] Dies Here Thursday

George Emery McGee, 63, of Midfield, died Thursday morning at 2:30 at the Matagorda General Hospital.

Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. J. O. Summerfield of Baytown and Miss Bertie McGee of Midfield; one son, Carrol D. of Midfield and one sister, Mrs. B. Aycock of Nursery.

Services will be Saturday morning at 10 from Taylor Bros. Funeral Home with burial in Hawley Cemetery.

Last Rites Held For George E. Magee At Taylor Brothers

Last rites for George Emery Magee, 63, a retired farmer of Midfield, were held Saturday at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home.

Mr. Magee died Thursday.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Mrs. J. O. Summersil of Baytown, Miss Bertie Magee of Midfield; one son, Carroll of Midfield, and one sister.

Sam Maglitto

(November 1, 1928 - January 8, 2014)

Sam Anthony Maglitto passed away January 8, 2014 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was 85 years old. Sam was born November 1, 1928 to Dave and Rosalie Maglitto in Houston, Texas. He graduated from Tomball High School and the University of North Texas. Sam was an educator at BCISD for over 30 years. His love and dedication to children touched many lives. He was active in the Lions Club, the Bay City Chamber of Commerce, Texas Retired Teachers Association and many other local organizations. His fondest times were singing with the Coastaliers, traveling to Honduras for missions, serving his community, and playing the harmonica for his cherished grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Some of his achievements include Outstanding Man of the Year 1977, Lifetime member of Lions Club, Melvin Jones Award for Humanitarian Service 1994 and 2008, Volunteer of the Year Matagorda General Hospital and Matagorda House 1986, Lion of the Year 1987, Black Cat Relays dedicated in his honor 1988, Honduras Medical Mission Team 1993-2008, Inductee into Black Cat Hall of Fame 2008.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Martha, his children, Mike Maglitto, Delaine Faseler (Bob), Cathy Green (Henry), and Mark Maglitto. He is also survived by his brothers Dave Maglitto and Carl Maglitto, his grandchildren Bridget Brown, Gina Green, Phillip Faseler (Erin), Paul Faseler (Deena), Jenny Sloan (Kevin), Payton Faseler, Natalie Maglitto and great grandchildren Nicole, Brice, Audrey, Blake, Patrick, Cameron and Claire, as well as many nieces and nephews.

The Visitation/reception will begin at 1:00 PM Saturday, January 11, 2014 in the Parish Hall of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Bay City. Funeral service will follow at 3:00 PM with Rev. Brad Sullivan officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be his grandchildren. Honorary Pallbearers will be Charles Coney, Spencer Green, Walter Jefferson, Bobbie Kimball, Dick Quinn, Melvin Stone, Burt Williams and all of his former Black Cat Students.

Funeral Services For A. D. Magruder, 48, Held In Victoria

[Alexander Dalton Magruder October 19, 1902 – December 11, 1950]

Funeral services were held on Wednesday last week for A. D. Magruder, 48, district manager of the Central Power & Light Company at Victoria.

Mr. Magruder lived in Bay City as district engineer for C. P. & L. for several years and had many friends. He was stricken with a heart attack sitting at his desk.

Services were held at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Victoria with the Rev. Charles Hill officiating.

Surviving are his mother, Mrs. J. R. Martin of San Antonio; his wife, Mrs. Jean Watson Magruder; two sons, Leonard and Walter; a daughter, Jean; a sister, Mrs. Alice Murphy of Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

John Amos Maher

MAHER, John Amos, 70, died Friday afternoon at his home in Sweeny. Services were held at 3 p. m. Sunday at Taylor Brothers Funeral Chapel, the Rev. Eldon Reed of Sweeny Methodist Church officiating. Interment was in Hawley Cemetery. He is survived by his wife of Sweeny; two sons, Robert Melton and John Maher, both of Houston; two sisters, Mrs. Ethel Bush and Mrs. Viola Dietz, both of Lake Charles. Pallbearers were Bobby Voorhies, Sonny Summers, S. M. Dickerson, R. Sveton, Chester Gloeckner and H. W. Mangum. He was a rice buyer and former resident of Bay City.

Lois Blake Keller Maher
(November 28, 1910 - February 6, 2009)

Lois Blake Keller Maher, 98, formerly of Sweeny, passed away February 6, 2009. She was born November 28, 1910 in Collegeport, TX to the late Roy E. Coffin and Alma McSparran Coffin. Lois was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Sweeny and was the organist there for many years.

Her husbands, Ludwin Keller & Johnny Maher, and daughter Sue Keller all preceded her in death. Survivors include: sons & their wives Kerry & Earline Keller of Port Lavaca, and Rex & Exa Mae Keller of Sweeny; cousin Jean Barrow & husband Mac of Alvin; grandsons Craig, Lane, Keith & Brad Keller; 9 great grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held 11:00 AM Monday, February 9, 2009 at Hawley Cemetery in Blessing with Rev. Sherry Crenshaw officiating.

Robert Joseph Mahoney

Robert Joseph Mahoney, DDS, died May 20, 1997 at Citizen Memorial Hospital in Victoria.

Mahoney was born Jan. 5, 1942 in Brownwood to John J. and Kathleen Laswell Mahoney. Mahoney was a member of the First Baptist Church of Palacios. He had practiced Dentistry for 31 years, the last nine in Palacios where he had the Mahoney Clinic. Mahoney was a Fellow of Academy of General Dentistry, a life member of the American Dental Association, a life member of the Texas Dental Association, a member of the Guadalupe Valley Dental Services, was a third generation Texas, and a member of the Sons of The Republic of Texas, life member of the Optimist International, member and past President of the Palacios Rotary Club, former vice president of the Palacios Little League and an announcer of the games, and a member and past director of the Palacios Chamber of Commerce.

Survivors include wife, Linda Wiesepape Mahoney of Palacios; three sons, Bobby, Christopher and Andrew Mahoney all of Palacios, and by his mother Kathleen Laswell Simmons of Austin.

Funeral Services will be 10 a. m. Thursday, May 22, 1997 at the First Baptist Church in Palacios, with Rev. Hollas Hoffman and Bro. Shan Jackson officiating. Interment will be at the Hawley Cemetery in Blessing.

Pallbearers will be D. Douglas Atnip, Roy D. Crone, Claude G. Firgeroa, Terry W. Mosier, Louis J. Jones and Roy L. Rose. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Palacios Rotary Club.

Cathy L. Mangum passed away on Monday, January 6, 2014. Cathy was born on December 4, 1952 in Bay City, Texas to the late Dalton Mangum and Ruby Plant O’Bryan. Cathy was an avid reader. Cathy loved her family especially her grandchildren.

Cathy is survived by her child, Anthony “Scooter” Mangum & wife Amalia; grandchildren, Ashley Chancellor & husband Barret, Marissa Mangum & A. J. Mangum, great-grandchildren, Summer & Caitlan Chancellor; brothers & sisters, Oma Stevens & husband Bryan, Larry Mangum & wife Paula, Joseph O’Bryan & wife Danny, Katy O’Bryan, Patti Williamson, Doogy O’Bryan & wife Missy, and numerous nieces and nephews. Cathy was preceded in death by her parents.

William Henry Mann, Sr.

Funeral services for William Henry Mann, Sr., 73, of Bay City will be held at 3 p. m. Tuesday at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home with the Rev. W. E. Dugger, Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park, Van Vleck.

Mr. Mann was born Aug. 13, 1912, in Bay City to Colbert and Amy Ryman Mann and died July 12, 1986, at Matagorda General Hospital, Bay City.

He was a member of Masonic Lodge A. F. & A. M. 865 and the Methodist church.

Survivors include his wife, Erna Harbison Mann of Bay City; a son, Billy Mann of Bay City; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be members of the Masonic Lodge.

Mr. Aaron Marcaurele 51, of Blessing, died Sunday afternoon at 2 in the Nightingale Hospital, El Campo.

Louis Marcaurele Dies In Wharton

Mr. Louis Elbert Marcaurele, 46, of 1400 Ave. H, Bay City, died today in Caney Valley Hospital, Wharton.

Mr. Marcaurele is survived by his wife, Mrs. Eula Marcaurele; one daughter, Laura Elizabeth Marcaurele; his father, Louis Marcaurele, of Cordele; four sisters, Mrs. Leonia Pogue of Brazoria, Mrs. Dorothy Miller, Lone Star, Mrs. Irene Dawson, Danbury, and Mrs. Grace Townsend of Blessing. He is also survived by five brothers, Aaron of Blessing, Ivan of Bay City, Bill of Pasadena, Gene of El Campo and Dewie Maucaurele of Cordele.

He was a veteran of World War II, where he served in the Navy. He was of the Presbyterian faith.

Becky Hill Marceaux, 60, of Bay City passed away April 17, 2013. She was born March 5, 1953 in San Antonio, TX to the late David C. Hill and Betty Ann Bratcher Hill. She was a loving sister and mother.

Harold W. Martin, 87, of Corpus Christi, Texas, passed away Saturday, August 24, 2013 at his home after a long illness. He was born June 19, 1926 in Roanoke, Texas to Columbus and Mary Alice Fawkes Martin.

Mr. Martin was a U.S. Marine Veteran, having served during WWII. He had worked as a game warden and harbor master.

He is survived by: his son, Mike (Kathy) Martin of Corpus Christi, Texas; three granddaughters; six great-grandchildren; three brothers, Johnny (Melva Joyce) Martin and Bobby (Carol) Martin of Possum Kingdom Lake, Texas, Fred (Carol Sue) Martin of Joshua, Texas; one sister, Suzie Boyd of Lake Whitney, Texas; numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be conducted at noon Saturday, September 7, 2013 at Matagorda Harbor, Texas.

Laura Martinez

(September 6, 1963 - January 8, 2014)

Laura Martinez is survived by her Mother, Elodia (Lola) Vega Martinez, brother Raymond Norberto Martinez, sister Pam Martinez, and nephew Steven R. Martinez. Her mother-in-law, Elma Gallegos, sister-in-law, Ana Gallegos, brother-in-law Chris Gallegos and the love of her life Reymundo Gallegos, and their precious babies: Nina, Princess, Mr. Black, and Mr. Brown. A host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends. Laura was preceeded in death by her father Domingo Martinez. Paternal grandparents Eusebio and Guadalupe P. Martinez.Maternal grandparents Rev. Apolonio and Nicolasa Tovar Vega. On Wed Jan 8, Laura succumbed to complications of double pneumonia, resulting in cardiac arrest. She was 50 years old. She was born in Bay City, Texas on Sept 6, 1963. She graduated from James Madison High School in Houston in 1982. She briefly attended The University Of Houston- Downtown. Laura worked in Healthcare for most of her adult life. Her warm, outgoing nature is how she met people and built a rapport. The kind of person you would always want around. She was a free spirit and very young at heart. She loved life and having a good time. Always on the go. She knew how to implement ideas and cheer on the team. Laura has been a MYF youth counselor, and volunteered at her church, Westbury UMC. She has assisted the elderly, as well as the homeless at a day shelter. She contributed her efforts to causes such as the National Kidney Foundation, March of Dimes, Autism Speaks, etc. Some of her activities were attending church, entertaining family and friends in her home, attending live music concerts, shopping, couponing, singing, playing piano, and exploring the latest technical or kitchen gadgets. Laura will be remembered for her sincere friendship, and she will be greatly missed by so many who Loved her!

A rosary will be recited at 6:00 PM Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. Funeral service will be 11:00 AM Monday, Jan. 13, 2014 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home with Rev. L. M. Matchett, 71, Dies; Bay City Tax Assessor

Bay City—Services will be held today at 2 p. m. at the First Methodist Church for Lewis M. Matchett, 71, Bay City tax assessor-collector who died Wednesday.

He was a charter member of Bay City Lions Club and had served as its secretary since its organization in October, 1940. He was a former zone chairman and deputy district governor of Lions Dist. 284.

Matchett and another Lions member, Harry Moseley, originated the idea and underwrote the building of Bay City High School’s Memorial Stadium with assistance of the Lions Club.

For many years he was a member of the board of Bay City Independent School District and served as its president and secretary. He was a longtime member of the Matagorda County Tuberculosis Assn., a member of the Methodist Church and was a past master of Bay City Lodge 865 A. F. & A. M.

He had been city tax assessor-collector since April 12, 1951.

Survivors are his wife, Olga Grote Matchett; a daughter, Elizabeth, the wife of Dr. George M. Stevens of Houston; brother, Robert K. Matchett of Nacogdoches; and four grandchildren.

Burial will be in Cedarvale Cemetery under direction of Bay City Funeral Home.

Olga Grote Matchett

1890 – 1971

 

Mrs. Olga Grote Matchett, age 80, passed away at her home, 2512 Avenue H, over the weekend. Mrs. Matchett, a long-time resident of Bay City, was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Missionary Society and Eastern Star, as well as other civic organizations.

 

Services will be held at 2:30 PM, Wednesday, March 17, at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. G. Wayland Elmore officiating. Interment will be at Cedarvale Cemetery. Friends may call until 1:30 PM at the Bay City Funeral Home.

 

Survivors are: daughter, Mrs. G. M. Stevens of Houston; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

 

Pallbearers will be W. R. Carradine, Abe Cornelson, John Woolsey, Gordon Richardson, Fred Walker, and George Yeager.

 

Services are under the direction of Dick R. Elkins, Bay City Funeral Home.

Last Rites to be said for Well-Known Citizen

 

Funeral services will be held tomorrow for well-known Bay Citizen Mrs. Olga Grote Matchett, who passed away over the weekend.

 

Mrs. Matchett was the widow of the late Lewis Matchett, a former tax assessor and collector for the City of Bay City. He was also prominent in formulating the annual Rice Festival held in Bay City.

 

Active in many civic organizations, Mrs. Matchett prided herself in memberships with the Missionary Society and Eastern Star. She was also an active member of the First United Methodist Church.

 

A resident of Bay City for 55 years, Mrs. Matchett, who was 80 at the time of her death, was found dead from a cardiac arrest in her home at 2512 Avenue H Sunday evening. She was living alone.

Frank Edward Matthes, Sr., 85, of Blessing died Sept. 3 in the Matagorda General Hospital. He was born Aug. 16 in Frankfort, Mo. Funeral services were held today at 2:30 for Mr. Robert L. Maxwell, 73, from Taylor Bros. Funeral Home with Rev. B. A. Reeves officiating. Mr. Maxwell died at his home in Markham Monday.

He is survived by his wife and five daughters, Mrs. Della Smith, Blessing; Mrs. Patsy Kennedy, Bay City; Mrs. Dessie Frick, Mrs. Zelphia Frick and Mrs. Zella Bohuslar, all of Markham; one son, Robert L. Maxwell, in the service; one step-daughter, Mrs. Boyce Stewart. Also surviving are 24 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren.

PALACIOS - Warren D. "Bud" Maynard, 76, of Palacios passed away Tuesday, May 21, 2013. He was born July 9, 1936 in Nowata, Oklahoma to the late Chance & Edith Reed Maynard. Bud was an avid sports fan, especially football. He was a very loving father and grandfather.

Bud was preceded in death by his parents; very loving wife of 44 years: Hilda Lee Gering Maynard; and son: Louis Michael Maynard. He is survived by 2 daughters: Kathy Maynard Huddleston & husband Mike of San Antonio and Kelly Maynard Schneider & husband Ronnie of Palacios, son: Kenneth Dale Maynard & wife Barbara of Palacios; 6 grandchildren: Michael, Mark, & Matthew Huddleston, Ashlyn & Jakes Schneider, and Trey Michael Maynard; 2 great grandchildren: Cade Schneider & Luke Huddleston; and sister: Darlene Heckman

Ruby Medlin 

Funeral services for Ruby Medlin, 88, of Bay City will be held 2 pm Friday at Trinity Assembly of God Church in Bay City with the Rev. Paul Van Winkle officiating. Burial to follow at Roselawn Memorial Park, Van Vleck.

Mrs. Medlin was born April 15, 1902, in Alma, Texas, and died Aug. 29, 1990, at her home.

A resident of Bay City since April 1945, she was a member of the Trinity Assembly of God Church in Bay City.

She is survived by her two daughters, Jeanette Foss of Bay City and La Vern Ramirez of Port Lavaca; a sister, Bobbie Bishop of Italy, Texas; a brother, Cleo Byrd of De Soto, Texas; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by two sons, Loyd Medlin on Jan. 15, 1987, and Hershel Medlin on April 8, 1972.

Pallbearers include Roy Sanders, Roger Bennett, Dennis Schneider, Bernie Schneider, Marvin Schneider, and Gary Hales.

INEZ—Ruth Anna Meinke, 87, of Inez, died Monday, Oct. 23, 2000.

She was born June 7, 1913, in Palacios, to the late Oscar Lancaster and Lona Maynard Harris. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church of Inez.

Survivors: daughter, Alice Cockrell of Inez; son, Gary Meinke of Ganado; sisters, Ethel King of Beaumont and Edna Revel of Austin; brother, Oscar Harris Jr. of La Ward; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Preceded in death by: parents; sisters, Myrtle Littleton; brother, Arnold Harris.

Visitation was 7 p. m. Tuesday at McCabe-Carruth Funeral Home chapel.

Paul Lewis Mielsch, 52, of Bay City passed away February 9, 2013 in Houston, Texas. He was born May 6, 1960 to John Paul Mielsch and Evelyn Sutton Mielsch.

He was preceded in death by his father, John Paul Mielsch; grandparents, Lewis L. and Thelma Sutton and Fred A. and Ella Mielsch.

He is survived by: mother, Evelyn S. Mielsch; sister, Cathey Lynne Willson; brother-in-law, Kenneth H. Willson; and nephew, Dain J. Sawyer.

Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on February 16, 2013 at First Christian Church with the Rev. Tom Quirk with remarks from Dr. Joseph Cannon.

Mr. Mikus was born Jan. 4, 1925, to Charles J. and Sophie Raska Mikus in Houston and died June 30, 1991, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Tampa, Fla.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U. S. Navy.

He is survived by his ex-wife, Edna Mikus of Houston; two daughters, Sheryl Jeffery and Sophie Mikus of Houston; a son, Charles Mikus of Houston; one sister, Evelyn Trigg; and five grandchildren.

Annie was a life long resident of Matagorda County, a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Wadsworth, a life member of VFW Post 2438 Ladies Auxiliary, and worked as an office clerk for J. C. Penny’s for many years.

She is survived by her loving husband: William E. Miller of Wadsworth; 3 daughters: Doris Layton & husband Johnny of Wadsworth, Karen Trobl & husband Jimmy of Bay City, and Laura Evans & husband Steve of Barksdale, TX; son: Joe Gates & wife Sandra of League City; step daughter: Kathy Cofrin & husband Albert of Houston; sister: Bernice Woodrow & husband Charles of Brazoria, brother: Stanley Genzer & wife Joyce of Markham; 9 grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren. Annie was preceded in death by her parents, first husband Roderick Gates and 5 siblings.

Gene Paul Miller, 80, of Bay City passed away February 3, 2014. He was born September 2, 1933 in St. Louis, Missouri, to John Eugene Miller and Blanche Roegner Miller.

He served his county in the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict where he taught electronics to NATO Students in Germany for 3 years. He was an I & E Forman for Mundy Co. at Celanese Plant for 11 years. He loved woodworking in his shop and was blessed with the ability to fix anything.

Survivors include his mother Blanche Miller of Bay City; wife Katherine (Collins) Miller of Bay City; son Stewart N. Miller (Nena Duvall) of Seabrook, TX; daughters Karen D. LaBouve (Ray) of Nederland, TX and Barbara A. Blanchard (James) of Friendswood, TX; grandchildren Christopher N. Miller (Trisha), Tyler C. Miller, Cornelia A. Miller, Jesse S. Miller, Cody I. Blanchard (Erin), Mitchell P. Blanchard, Katherine M. Blanchard and great grandchildren Madison Miller, Tessa Miller and Karlee Blanchard.

Bonnie Charlene Mills, 89, of Bay City, passed away August 9, 2013.

She was born June 22, 1924 in Petrolia, Illinois to Charles and Ava Dunlap Smith. She was one of eight children.

Bonnie married Lloyd C. Mills in 1941 and they had four sons.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; four sisters, June, Maxine, Marge and Verna Mae; two brothers, Carson and Ray; one son, Donald Eugene (Gene) Mills; one daughter-in-law, Shirley Mills; and her best friend, Betty Gentry.

Bonnie was a loving mother, who worked two jobs to raise her “boys,” who were her world. Kids who grew up in Petrolia still remember her wonderful lunches when she was the cook at the grade school there. She was life long member of Petrolia UMC and a wonderful sister, aunt and friend to many.

She is survived by: three sons, Clifford Allen (Butch) Mills of Covington, IN, James Richard (Dick) Mills (Mari) of Silver Spring, MD and Michael D. (Mike) Mills (Kathy) of Bay City; one daughter-in-law, Penny Mills of Bridgeport; one sister, Mary Howe of Lawrenceville; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, whom she loved as her own (including her “favorite son” Chuck Baldwin of Kingfisher, Okla.) and many “camping buddies” from East Fork Camp Ground in Olney.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, August 14, 2013 at Cunningham Funeral Home in Bridgeport, Illinois.

Mr. U. E. Moffett died at his home in this city this morning at 4 o’clock and will be buried in the Cedarvale Cemetery tomorrow morning at 10 o’clock with religious services at the home at 9 o’clock. His wife and nine children, six sons and three daughters, survive him.

Descendent was born October 30, 1851, and was, therefore, 64 years, 9 months and 24 days of age. He moved with this family to Bay City from New Waverly, Texas, in 1912, and has made this his home since that time.

Mr. Moffett was a splendid man, a loving father and husband, a consistent member of the Baptist Church and a devout man in every respect. Since coming to Bay City he has made a host of friends who are grieved over his death.

The funeral services will be conducted at the residence in the morning at 9 o’clock by his pastor, Rev. Gilliam, pastor of the First Baptist Church.

Ramon Montalvo, 94, of Wadsworth passed away February 12, 2014.

He was born February 27, 1919 in Bay City, TX, to the late Felipe and Eulalia Vasquez Montalvo. He served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII.

His wife, Maria Delores Montalvo; and son, Roy Montalvo preceded him in death.

Survivors include daughters, Maria McLain (Cecil) of El Campo, Juanita McLain (Robin) of Bay City, Susie Gussman of Wadsworth and Mona Lechuga (Ernest) of Bay City; sister, Juanita Montalvo of Galveston; brother, Fernando Montalvo of Corpus Christi; grandchildren, Aaron, Laylia and Beth McLain, Venus Smith, Robin McLain Jr., Steven McLain, Vanessa McLain, Roy McLain, Virginia Sanchez and Andrew Medina; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

A rosary was recited at 6 p.m., Friday, February 14, 2014 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home.

The Funeral service was held at 10 a.m., Saturday, February 15, 2014, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with Msgr. Gerry Cernoch officiating.

Mrs. Ida Varina Morehead, 91, of Bay City, died at Lake Jackson Nursing Home on June 15. She was a member and past matron of the Bay City Chapter 380, Order of the Easter Star, member of the Past Matrons and Patrons Club, active in her church, member of the Gleaners Sunday School Class and the Women's Society of Christian Service and a lifelong resident of Matagorda County. Survivors include: daughter, Mrs. Beatrice Stewart of Wharton; sons, Thomas "Tommy" Morehead of Richmond and William M. "Billy" Morehead of Bruni; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. William Middleton Morehead

Funeral services for William Middleton Morehead, 85, of Mission Viejo Calif. will be 11 a. m. Saturday, March 7 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Toland officiating. Interment will be at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City.

Mr. Morehead died March 1 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Orange, Calif.

He was born March 22, 1912 in Buckholts, Milam Co., Texas to the late William Henry and Ida Varina Lowe Morehead. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Bay City, a member and past Master of Bay City Masonic Lodge No. 865 A. F. and A. M. and also past Master of the Masonic Grand Lodge of Texas.

He was a former longtime resident of Bay City, and former resident of Bruni, Texas and has been living in Mission Viejo for the past 14 months. In 1997, he retired from Skelly Oil with some 35 years of service.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Paul Payne of Mission Viejo; one granddaughter, Denise L. Payne of Corona, Calif.; and two great grandchildren, Ben and Dawn Payne of Corona.

He was preceded in death by his wife Julie Inez Morehead on November 18, 1993; two sisters, Beatrice Stewart and Freda McKelvy and by one brother, Tommy Morehead.

A longtime former resident of Bay City, she was a resident of Bruni since 1956 and a member of the Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors include: her husband of 58 years, William “Bill” Morehead of Bruni; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Paul Payne of Mission Viejo, California; a sister, Dessie Blackburn of Kingsville; a granddaughter, Denise Payne of Mission Viejo, California; a great-grandson, Benjamin Payne; and, a great-granddaughter, Stephanie Payne.

Mary Anne Billingsley Morgan

Funeral services for Mary Anne Billingsley Morgan, 86, of Houston are scheduled for 10 a. m., Friday Sept. 26, 1997 at the First Baptist Church in Bay City with Dr. Michael Zimmerman officiaint. Interment will follow in Cedarvale Cemetery.

Mrs. Morgan died Sept. 21, 1997 and was a former 37-year resident of Bay City. She had resided in Houston for the past 15 years.

She is survived by her daughter, Anne LaCour and husband Ron; two grandchildren, Rodney LaCour and Andrea LaCour, all of Spokane, Wash.; sister, Donie Pfleider of Irvine, Calif.; numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Morgan was preceded in death by her beloved husband John Green Morgan. She was a past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Bay City Chapter 380. Friends may call at Geo. Lewis and Sons, 1010 Bering Dr., Houston after 9 a. m. on Thursday where the family will be present for visitation from 5 to 7 p. m.

Morgan, Otis Guinn, 73, of Wharton, died Sunday at Matagorda General Hospital. Funeral services set for 2:30 p. m. Wednesday at the Taylor Brothers Funeral Chapel with the Rev. G. T. Parker and the Rev. James Appleby of Markham officiating. Morgan is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Mary Quinney of Markham; one son, James W. Morgan of Paramount, Calif.; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Beverly Jo Morris

Funeral services for Beverly Jo Morris, 39, Bay City, Texas are pending. Officiating will be by Kenny Petro of Jones Creek and Hoss Gwin of Bay City. Interment will be at Hawley Cemetery in El Maton, Texas.

Morris died May 26 at 11:30 a.m. at her home.

She is survived by O. J. Morris was born on December 2, 1959 in Wharton to O. J. Fickel, Jr. and Z. Faye Payne.

Julius Mosier Dies Saturday Morning

Mr. Julius Mosier, age 87, 10 months and 11 days, was taken in death here Saturday morning at 9:45 following an illness of long duration. The octogenarian was a life long resident of Matagorda County.

He is survived by four nephews; W. H. Smith of Blessing, Rudolph and Ed and August Mosier of Palacios; two nieces, Mrs. Clara Hicks of Palacios and Mrs. Anna Mae Cartwright of Seminole.

Funeral services were held from the Matchett-Newman Funeral Home, Monday afternoon at 2:30 with the Rev. R. E. Black of Markham officiating. Burial was in Hawley Cemetery.

Delilah Wiley Morton

Mrs. Delilah Wiley Morton, 50, of Palacios died April 15 at the Wagner General Hospital in Palacios. She was a lifetime resident of Matagorda Co. and served as a nurses aide at the Leisure Lodge Nursing Home in Palacios before her illness. Survivors include: husband Billy Morton of Palacios; daughter, Teresa Blackwell of Palacios; sons, James of Bay City and Braxton of Palacios; brothers, Charles H. Wiley of Houston, Leslie Wiley of Santee, California, and John David Wiley of Palacios; two grandsons. Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Tuesday, April 17, at the Palacios Funeral Home with Rev. j. R. Gwin officiating. Interment will be at the Hawley Cemetery with pallbearers being: Lawrence Mitchell, Cotton J. Billy Merle Morton
Nov. 9, 1920 - Jan. 24, 2007

Billy Merle Morton, 86 of Palacios, was born November 9, 1920 at Sloan Ranch in Matagorda County To Thomas Warren Morton and Irene Fox Morton. He went to our Lord on Wednesday, January 24, 2007.

Billy served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II and earned the Europe-Africa-Middle Eastern (EAME) Campaign Medal with three Bronze Stars and the Good Conduct Medal. He also received the Purple Heart for injuries received serving aboard the Liberty Ship, Samuel J. Tilden, when it was bombed during the 1943 Bari Harbor disaster.

Mr. Morton worked as a Diesel Mechanic for Gulf Oil for 28 years, and worked for the City of Palacios as a mechanic for 15 years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #990 AF & AM of Palacios where he earned the Golden Trowel award. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Palacios, Queen-Hamlin VFW Post #2467 and the Palacios Volunteer Fire Department. He was honored by the Chamber of Commerce as Man of the Year and November ninth is designated as "Billy Morton Day" in Palacios.

He is survived by: his daughter, Teresa Blackwell and husband Eddie of Palacios; sons, James L. Morton of Palacios and Charles Braxton Morton and wife Pam of Willis; sister, Betty Fern Day of Deutschburg; brother, Donald Morton and wife Joyce of Pecos; four grandchildren and two great grandsons.

He was preceded in death by: his wife of 33 years, Delilah Wiley Morton; parents, Irene and Thomas Warren Morton; a sister, Noreen Nelson, and a brother, Lester Morton.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 28, 2007 at the Palacios Funeral Home with the Rev. Donald Kopecky officiating. Masonic graveside services will follow at Hawley Cemetery in Blessing.

Pallbearers will be Sammy Davidson, George Capak, David Blackwell, Leonard Lamar, Chencho Garcia, and Hudson "Cooter" Bates.

Thomas W. Morton

Funeral services for Thomas Warren Morton were held at the Palacios Funeral Home Sunday, March 14, at 3 p. m. with the Rev. W. D. Baker officiating. Interment was in Hawley Cemetery.

A retired carpenter, he was born November 25, 1889, in Mountain Home, Arkansas, a son of Samuel A. and Maggie H. Swearingen Morton. He died Friday morning, March 12, in Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City.

He is survived by his wife, Irene Morton of Blessing; two daughters, Mrs. Norene Nelson of Bay City and Mrs. Elizabeth Fern Day of Blessing; three sons, Lester and Billy M. Morton of Palacios and Donald E. Morton of Pecos; four sisters, Esther F. Poe of Stockton, Calif., Sammie A. Bynum of Fresno, Calif., Marie Terry of Dallas and Dorthy Scarborough of Kerens; thirteen grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Charles Ernest Moser, 75, of Wadsworth died Friday in a Galveston hospital. Surviving are his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Ecabodor of San Diego, Mrs. Louis Schumacher of Corpus Christi, Mrs. I. C. Morris of Refugio; four sons, Ernest Jr. of Los Angeles, Jimmy of the U. S. Navy at San Diego, Fred of Brooklyn, and Rex of Houston.

Funeral services for Grady E. Moss, 54, a former resident of Markham, will be held at 1 p. m. Sunday at the Martin Funeral Home chapel in Alvin followed by graveside services at 4 p. m. at Hawley Cemetery.

Moss, a Navy veteran, is survived by his wife; two daughters, Mrs. W. H. Bohuslar and Mrs. Pier Lee of Markham; one brother, Jesse Moss, Sand Springs, Oklahoma; two sisters, Mrs. Ida Cook, Holdenville, Oklahoma, and Mrs. Leon Mewberry, Bakersfield, California; and three grandchildren.

Joseph A. “Joey” Mower

Funeral services for Joseph A. “Joey” Mower, 24 of Palacios are scheduled for 2 p. m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, 1994, at First Baptist Church in Palacios with the Rev. Hollas Hoffman officiating. Burial will follow at Hawley Cemetery in Blessing.

Mr. Mower was born Jan. 31, 1970, in Ft. Myers, Fla., to Bruce and Jane Morad Mower and died Oct. 29, 1994, in Victoria.

He graduated from Palacios High School in 1988 and joined the U. S. Navy. He served in the Persian Gulf War. After returning home, he became an electrician for Formosa Plastics. He was also a member of the Palacios Fire Department.

Survivors include his wife, Kelly Mower of Palacios; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Mower of Palacios; a daughter, Brooke Florene Mower of Palacios; a sister, Michelle Fischer of Savannah, Ga.; a brother, Ashel Mower of the U. S. Navy.

Gail Lois Mozley

Graveside funeral services for Gail Lois Mozley, 63, of Palacios will be at 2 p. m. on Wednesday, March 11 at Hawley Cemetery with Joe Dan Huffman officiating.

Mrs. Mozley died March 8 at Memorial Medical Center in Port Lavaca. She was born September 22, 1934 to the late Gayle and Elida Miller Johnson in Rio Grande City. She was a member of the Church or Christ and a life-long resident of Palacios.

She is survived by husband Howard Mozley of Palacios; a daughter and son-in-law, Teri and Donald Kelly of Palacios; son and daughter-in-law Monty and Kathy Mozley of Palacios; a brother, George Johnson of Houston; five grandchildren, Justin, Dylan and Lucas Kelly and Monte and Will Mozley all of Palacios.

Raymond E. Mozley

Raymond E. Mozley, 63, of Galveston, were at 2 p. m. Monday, Aug. 10, 1998 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, President Joe Cannon officiating.

Interment followed at Hawley Cemetery in Blessing.

Mr. Mozley died Aug. 5 in Palacios.

He was born October 16, 1935 in Palacios to the late Earl and Lola Gillespie Mozley.

He was a resident of Galveston for the past five years and a former longtime resident of Matagorda County.

He was also a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Survivors are: daughter, Cindy Martine of Galveston; sister, Mildred Miller of Port Lavaca; brother, Howard Mozley of Palacios, Richard Mozley of Blessing, and Clifford Mozley of Los Angeles.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elvera Mozley.

Pallbearers were Monty Mozley, Ricky Mozley, Donald Kelly, Glenn Ashcraft, Reuben Gariby and Justin Mozley.

Honorary pallbearers were Charles Talbot, Shep Graham, E. J. Thormaehlen, E. J. Ashcraft, Jr., John Underwood, William Zundel, Brian Johnson, and Greg Jones.

Christopher Columbus Murphree
September 19, 1927 – July 20, 2013

Christopher Columbus Murphree, 85, of Bay City, Texas passed away July 20, 2013.

He was born September 19, 1927 in Haworth, Oklahoma to the late Leonard Franklin Murphree and Jettie Wooley Murphree. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict and retired from the Matagorda County Drainage District after 36 years of service. He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors include his wife, Joy Clayton Murphree; daughter, Betty Crosby and husband David; sons, Wayne Murphree and wife Lyssa, and Gary Murphree and wife Lori; and sister, Lillie Buffaloe. all of Bay City; special daughters, Mildred Martin of Beaumont and Ruby Burch of Wiley, TX; 17 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Three sisters and one brother all preceded him in death.

The family received friends and relatives from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, July 22, 2013 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Chapel with Rev. Warren Muntz officiating.

Interment followed at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck.

Pallbearers were Steven Clayton, Wesley Clayton, Mike Buffaloe, T. J. Buffaloe, Donnie Buffaloe, Clay Cook, Tommy Crosby, Michael Crosby and Lee Vaughan. Honorary pallbearers were James Rother, Jimmy Stephens, Truett Farris, Sherman Morgan, Jack Brannon, Ray Smithey, Benny Owen and Milton Jarrell.

Memorials in his name may be made to the Gideons International or the Church of the Nazarene.

Vernon C. Murphy

MURPHY, Vernon C., age 79, passed away December 15 in Wagner General Hospital, Palacios. A resident of the Palacios area since 1918, Mr. Murphy was a retired rice farmer. Services were held Thursday, December 16, at 2:00 p. m. in the Palacios Funeral Home, with the Rev. Leslie Webb officiating. Interment was in Hawley Cemetery, Blessing. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Pearl Murphy, sons John, Leonard, and Van, all of Blessing. Also, sisters, Mrs. Laura Erickson, Blessing; Mrs. Faye Taylor of Clemville and six grandchildren. Pallbearers were Tony Sliva, Elija Sliva, Raymond Laslie, L. B. Laslie, A. C. Harter, Raymond Svetlik and Ben Blackburn. Palacios Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
