R. A. Mathis Accidentally Killed.
As
sudden and as unexpected as a clap of thunder out of a clear sky
came the message that R. A. Mathis was dead. And like a pall that
cast a gloom over the whole community for he was much respected and
beloved.
On last Thursday
morning, the 9th instant, a ____ hunting party composed
of H. __ Applegate, R. A. Mathis, I. A. ____, M. W. _____, H. M.
Greene, G. W. Baker and Tom Lyle left town with dogs for day’s deer
hunt up the river. Having gone about six miles the hunters took
stands and Baker put his dogs on the trail.
About half past one
o’clock Applegate, who was about 150 yards distant, heard the report
of Mathis’ rifle, it was a muffled report followed by a distant
groan. His first impression was that it was an accident and that
Mathis had shot his horse, so he hastened to the spot, where he had
left him less than a half hour before, where he was horrified to
find that Mathis had accidentally shot and killed himself life being
expired before the time he could reach his side. His theory is that
Mathis had been standing leaning on his rifle, a 38 winchester with
the butt of the gun resting on a stump about 18 inches high and as
the dogs were running close, in some way the butt of the gun slipped
off of the stump striking the hammer discharged it, the ball
entering in the region of the heart, ranged upward and lodged just
back of his shoulder blade at top. Death was instant.
It took sometime to
get any of the hunters collected together out of the woods and it
was near 4 o’clock when Tom Lyle rushed into town with the awful
news that spread like wild fire. In a few minutes a body of his
friends and some of the officers were on the road with a vehicle in
which to bring the body to town, they arrived about dark.
A messenger was
dispatched to Caney for his brother-in-law, Mr. Victor LeTulle, who
arrived about 10 o’clock. It was decided to bury him in the new Bay
City Cemetery and the funeral arrangements were so made for 3 p. m.
Friday the following day. The religious ceremonies were conducted
from the home of Mr. and Mrs. E. P. Rugeley by Rev. Anderson, after
which the body was taken in charge by the local camp of Woodmen of
the World, of which the deceased was a member, and laid to rest
according to their beautiful ceremony. The funeral was one of the
largest ever held in the county, business houses all closed, there
were some 85 vehicles in the procession, beside those on horseback.
Never have we witnessed a funeral where there was more universal and
profound sorrow. The stoutest heart was bowed in grief.
Deceased was about
26 years old, his history is well known to our readers, coming here
from Austin less than two years ago, he was elected county surveyor
in the fall which he resigned to accept the position of supervising
architect of the court house and jail for the county, which position
he held at time of his death. Honest, upright, kind, talented,
educated, ambitious, one of nature’s noblemen, universally admired
and respected, his was deemed one of the brightest futures of all
the young men of this coast country. He loved Matagorda county and
her people, the home of his adoption?, and in turn they loved him.
His loss is looked upon as a personal one, as well as a great public
calamity.
It
will be remembered that on Nov. 20th last, deceased was
married to Miss Susie LeTulle, of Caney, the unusually happy newly
married pair had taken up their home in Bay City, boarding with Mr.
and Mrs. E. F. Rugeley for the present, they were planning to build
a cottage in which to go to housekeeping soon, in fact with fond
hopes and a bright future they were identified with our every social
and material interest, all so soon to be shattered. To his bereaved
bride wife, who, while crushed under the weight of her loss, came
through this awful ordeal with remarkable fortitude for her the
hearts of the whole community bleed in sympathy for hers is a sorrow
that makes the whole world kin. And his aged mother, who idolized
her baby boy, because he was a good son, as well as husband and
citizen came in for a full share of sympathy. She lives with her
daughters in Lexington, Texas, but all too far away to attend the
funeral.
Deceased always
thoughtful of those dependent on him carried $5000 life insurance,
$2000 in an old line N. Y. company and $3000 in the Woodmen of the
World. He was also a Mason.
Justice Hensley?,
serving as coroner, examined the body where it fell, took all the
testimony of the witnesses and returned a verdict of death from an
accidental gun shot in his own heart. It seemed very clear that the
butt of the gun had been resting on the top of the stump, for the
print of the hammer was plainly…had struck when discharged. The ___
may have ___ off while he was ___, for…near, or he may have been…and
uncertainty of life and the certainty of death and the importance of
___ ready.
The Breeze joins the
whole community in extending to the ____ ____ ones our sincerest
sympathy.
Bay City Breeze,
January 16, 1896
Rufus A. Mathis
J. B. Mathis, of
Lexington, brother of the late R. A. Mathis, deceased, arrived here
first of week. Mr. Mathis says that the blow of his brother’s sudden
death was almost too much for his poor old mother, and for a few
days her life was despaired of, but that she is now slowly
recovering, though very feeble. He will remain here a few days,
having come to personally get all the particulars he can of the
accident for the satisfaction of his family. He will be accompanied
by Mrs. Susie Mathis on his return home.
