Sheriff Mangum Dies Following
Train-Automobile Collision
Daughter Injured At Time; In Critical Condition at the
Hospital
Sheriff Joe Mangum, fine man, citizen, father and
husband is dead. Death came to relieve him of intense
pain and excruciating suffering at 10:30 o’clock today
following a state of unconsciousness since his car was
struck by a Santa Fe train in the city limits of
Matagorda Tuesday evening at about 5 o’clock.
Mr. Mangum and his daughter, Miss Thelma, had attended
the funeral of Mr. George B. Culver, which took place in
the Matagorda cemetery on Tuesday afternoon. There were
in attendance upon this sad event great throngs of
people and hundreds of cars. Mr. Mangum to avoid
traffic, instructed Miss Thelma to take a short cut to
the main highway, telling her, “we can get home
quicker.”
Miss Mangum was driving and approached the crossing just
in time for the approaching train to lift the automobile
up on its pilot and carry it for a hundred yards, the
occupants being thrown violently about for several
yards.
Eyewitness[es] rushed to the train and assisted the
train crew in extricating the victims from the wreck and
to administer as nearly as possible first aid treatment.
Mr. Mangum was unconscious, the impact being what proved
to be a fatal one. Miss Thelma was seriously lacerated.
Her clothes were literally torn from her and the flesh
badly bruised and cut over most of her body.
As fast as it was possible to do so, the two were rushed
to the Loos hospital in this city where the work of
trying to save their lives was begun. Mr. Mangum as
stated died this morning. Miss Thelma is still in a most
serious condition, due to nerve shock and her severe
injuries.
About two weeks ago Sheriff Mangum was in an automobile
collision when his car was run into while he was
speeding after box car thieves. That night he was badly
hurt, and was just getting out when he had his daughter
to drive him to the funeral at Matagorda.
In addition to being sheriff of the county, which
position he has held for several years, Mr. Mangum was a
successful rice grower, A native of the county and a man
of strong force of character and integrity. Joe Mangum
had hundreds of friends who will mourn his untimely and
tragic end.
His wife and children have the sympathy of the entire
town and county.
The paper has not been advised of any funeral
arrangements up to press time this afternoon.
Daily Tribune, Wednesday, July 8, 1931
Sheriff Mangum Buried
Perhaps the most largely attended of any funeral held in
this part of Texas took place Thursday afternoon when
Mr. Joe Mangum, sheriff of Matagorda county, was laid to

religious ceremonies held at the Methodist church
directed by Rev. Norman Anderson, Presbyterian pastor of
Freeport.
People from all over the county, brother officers from
other counties and many from more distant places,
attended by the hundreds. At the church only a small
part of the assembled people were accommodated. Flowers

stretched over practically the entire distance from the
city to the cemetery.
