John David “Jack” Langson died at his home in Francitas, Texas, September 12, 1949. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at 3 o’clock in the First Baptist Church with Rev. L. W. Crouch officiating. Interment was made in the Palacios Cemetery. Mr. Langston was born in Monticello, Miss., March 2, 1875. His family came to Texas in 1883 and settled at Blooming Grove. He married Miss Elle Chancey, January 1, 1899, and to this union were born seven children—4 girls and 3 boys. They came to South Texas about 1913 and settled in Jackson County near La Ward, moving to Francitas in 1916 and had resided there ever since. He became a member of the Baptist Church when sixteen years old. Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Ella Langston; two daughters, Mrs. Arvid Swenson of Olivia, and Mrs. Paul Wyatt of Palacios; two sons, Thomas Watts Langston of Bronson, Texas, and Wilbern Vernon Langston of Houston; four grandchildren and one brother, Luther L. Langston, of Jacksonville, Texas. Palacios Beacon, September 22, 1949 John David Langston Once again the Angel of Death passed over our community, and, on Monday, September 12th, 1949, laid his icy fingers on the brow of our friend, John David Langston. He died at his home about 6:00 p. m. He was born in Mississippi on March 2, 1875. He had been in poor health for many months, so the passing was softened by preparedness. On January first, Mr. and Mrs. Langston celebrated their Golden Wedding. Fifty years of married life, on which thirty-six had been lived here in our community. A life rich in the better things. Counting all the vicissitudes of life--the joys, the sorrows, and the blessed privilege of rearing their children--watching and praying, and helping these boys and girls to grow up to be good, honest, dependable citizens. Mr. Langston depended on the final opinion of "my wife" in all things. Often after a statement by someone he'd say: "That's what my wife says." Truly "their children have grown up to call them blessed." To us, Mr. Langston was not like a "ship that passes in the night," but a friend where opinion we did often seek. He touched, in good way, all who knew him, and called him "friend." His interests were always for the betterment of his neighbors, his community and his family. He became a member of the Baptist Church at the age of 16 years and was faithful to the end. In early manhood he was married to Miss Ella Clancy, To this union were born seven children, four of whom survive him. They are: Mrs. Jewel Swenson, Olivia; Mrs. Hortense Wyatt, Palacios; Watts Langston, Bronson, Texas; and Wilburn Langston, Houston, Texas. He also had four grandchildren; one brother, Luther Langston, Jacksonville, Texas and several nephews and one niece. One of his nephews, Delbert Langston (and wife) are here to spend the winter with Mrs. Ella Langston. Funeral services were held from the Baptist Church in Palacios, Bro. Crouch of Bay City officiating. Taylor Brothers were in charge. Mrs. Holliday sang the selected hymns: "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "Sweet Bye and Bye." Interment was made in Palacios Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Messrs E. H. Linton, Clay Robertson, J. W. Wofford, W. H. Wingart and R. Green. Among friends from away were: Mr. and Mrs. W. H. King, Bay City; Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Green, Victoria; Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Henson, Goliad. Also present were more than sixty of Francitas people and many Palacios friends. The flowers which covered his grave bore mute tribute to the deceased.
To his love ones, let me say: The writer wishes to again extend heartfelt sympathy. He was our friend, too. A FRIEND
