Samuel Laddie
February 5, 1928 - November 13, 2015

On February 5, 1928 Samuel Laddie was born to Samuel Laddie and Virginia Brown Laddie. While a young child, his family relocated from Houston to Bay City, Texas. He became a member of Mother Zion Baptist Church.

Sam was a very industrious man. During the Great Depression, he sold peanuts and shined shoes to help his beloved mother take care of their family. A turning point in his life was the marriage of his mother to Mr. Solomon Gaskin in 1943. Sam felt some of the responsibility of being the oldest son was lifted. Mr. Gaskin, a Christian man, raised Sam and his siblings as his children and treated his mother like a queen.

Sam was a member of the mighty Hilliard Panthers football team. His classmates remember him as being kindhearted and frugal. He was in the last class of Hilliard High to graduate from the two story frame building in the North End section of town in 1947. His principal was the renowned A. G. Hilliard II, a significant figure in the education of African Americans in Matagorda County, Texas.

Sam attended Prairie View A & M Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas (the name was changed to Prairie View A & M University in 1973.)

In 1950, Sam volunteered to serve his country by joining the U. S. Army. He served honorably during the Korean War. He was injured after surviving a grenade attack where many of his closest colleagues died. His bravery was rewarded with one of his proudest accomplishments, the Purple Heart When he returned from battle, Sam suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. There was little to no treatment for his condition at that time, particularly for an African American war veteran. Sam credited his recovery to God's grace and the persistent prayers of many family members and friends, most notably his mother, who communicated with him through letters with scriptures enclosed when he didn't want to talk.

Sam accepted his call to the ministry under the leadership of Rev. Kenneth Griggs. Rev. Laddie's service included visiting the sick, weekly Bible study at the Legacy, and participation in church activities. He even answered his phone "Rev. Laddie speaking."

Family life was very important to Sam. He maintained close relationships with his siblings, in laws, nieces, and nephews. In 1995, he married Ernestine Stanford; their union lasted until her death in 1997. He became the patriarch of a large clan, who lovingly dubbed him "Daddy Sam." Sam was known for his wit, no nonsense approach to life, and advice.

Through his long life that spanned times of great economic hardship, Jim Crow, segregation, war, sickness, and pain, Rev. Sam Laddie was a living testimony of God's protection and redemptive power.

He leaves to cherish his life and love his children: Rhonda Tolbert, Talma O'neal, Kennetha Stanford, Odessa Stanford, Robert Stanford, Herbert Stanford, and Jerome Stanford. A host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces; sisters-in-law, Hercelia Martin and Terrentia Laddie, and church family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Laddie and Virginia Gaskin; children, Amanda Anderson and Eddie Stanford.

Active pallbearers were: Ed Knowles, Ronald Brown, James Smith, Jerry Manning, Michael Hebert and Byron Sardinea.

Honorary pallbearers were: Gerald Brown, Rudolph Martin Jr., Phillip Randon, Eugene Dennard, My'Kle Randon.

Wanda Laird
November 16, 1937 - January 18, 2016

As you are reading your morning paper and stumble upon this nontraditional obituary, there is probably someone in your life you need to be sending a “Thank You” card to. Wanda Laird would encourage you to reach for your favorite pen and probably some fun frilly paper, and get that message out in the mail, as soon as possible. She was a woman who lived a life full of love and gratitude, often sending beautiful handwritten “Thank You” cards and letters in response to “Thank You” cards and letters.

Our precious and often feisty, Wanda Laird, 78, of Van Vleck, Texas, went home to the Lord on January 18, 2016, after battling months of illness.

During her lengthy hospital stay, she still sent out handwritten “Thank You” cards to remind friends and family that she loved and appreciated them.

Wanda Nell Laird was born November 16, 1937, to Curtis and Emaline Reed of Van Vleck, Texas. As a child, Wanda was encouraged to have a zest for reading and to always embrace her education.

After graduating from Van Vleck High School, she enrolled in Wharton County Jr. College, and pursued a degree in Special Education. During her journey, she took a quick break from school to start a family, with the love of her life, James (Jimmy) Laird. As soon as her boys were in nursery school, Wanda began driving to the University of Houston every day, until she received her Master’s Degree in Special Education. She severed as Region III’s Special Education Supervisor for over 20 years.

Wanda devoted her life to bettering the lives of special needs children. She was a woman who encouraged people to use all the crayons in the box and to color outside of every line.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband, James (Jimmy) Laird; son, Curtis Wayne Laird; parents, Curtis Reed and Emaline Reed; and brother, Shelbert Reed.

Wanda is survived by, son, Clay Laird and wife Connie Laird of Pasadena; granddaughter, Madison Marie Laird of Dallas; step-grandsons, Michael Tullius of Austin, Stanley Tullius of Austin and Jordan Tullius of Arlington; and great-grandson, Hudson Tullius of Arlington; as well as many cousins and friends.

A memorial service will be held at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City, Texas, on Thursday January 21, 2016, at 10 a.m., to celebrate Wanda’s life. Family and friends are encouraged to wear spring colors in honor of Wanda, who was often seen in some shade of pink.

Now, put your paper down, or cell phone, or iPad, whatever you may be reading this on, and pick up a pen and write out a “Thank You” note, to let someone know you appreciate them, Wanda would want you to.
