Vlasta Julia Ledwig, 86, of Bay City, TX passed away March 1, 2022. She was born May 29, 1935 in Guy, TX to the late Peter Listak and Mary Kocurek Listak. Vlasta was raised in the Guy/Damon area. Vlasta had her daughter, Sandy, in 1956. After a divorce in 1960, she began dating Julius. Julius would make sure dates would usually include Sandy! Vlasta worked for Southwestern Bell until she married Julius Ledwig in 1963. Upon marrying, they settled in Bay City where she helped run their business, the first JL’s. This allowed Julius to concentrate on farming and ranching. In December of 1968, they had the opportunity to sell JL’s and move to Collegeport. This was a perfect opportunity for them to expand their farming and ranching. The love and support Vlasta showed regarding the farming lifestyle with Julius is something she helped cultivate and nurture in their two sons. Both Jay and Scott learned every aspect of farming and ranching from their dad. They carry on Vlasta & Julius’ work ethic and love of the land that they helped establish all those years ago. That has also successfully been passed down to the third generation of Ledwig’s in Luke and Mason. Vlasta knew her way around a dance floor! She loved to host and cook for others so much that it led to her and Julius opening JL’s Country Kitchen in Blessing, TX in the mid 80’s. Many great memories were made at that little restaurant with all the patrons, family and loyal employees. She loved being around friends and family every day. She had a great sense of humor and the best laugh you’ve ever heard! After several successful years and many days and nights in the restaurant business, they decided to sell it and slow down. This didn’t last very long…in 1997, they decided they would open their second JL’s in Bay City! It was a meeting place for locals and friends and family filled with pool tables, shuffleboard a dance floor and more. In 2001 it was decided they move to Bay City to be closer to the business. In Vlasta’s younger years she was on a bowling league, and she bowled with the future wife of Bing Crosby-who would stop in occasionally! She took up crocheting and was very skilled at it. She made many afghan blankets in a variety of colors. Vlasta’s favorite thing was getting her hair and nails done. She always wanted to look her best! Her family will remember her loving heart, sense of humor and good cooking! Vlasta was preceded in death by her parents; husband Julius Henry Ledwig Sr., son-in-law Hal Knight, sister Bessie (Listak) Byrd Mooring, brothers; Vladimir Listak, Pat Vyvial, and Jerry Listak. She is survived by her daughter Sandy Knight; sons Jay Ledwig (Carol), Scott Ledwig (Cheryl), and brother Sidney Listak; grandchildren Karmen Cooley (Blake), Kristi Ward (Aaron), Kassie Knight, Luke Ledwig (Lauren), Meaghan White (Blake), Mason Ledwig, Natalie Ledwig and 6 great-granddaughters. Visitation will begin at 9:00 am Monday, March 7, 2022 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Blessing. The rosary will be recited at 9:30 am followed by the funeral Mass at 10:00 am with Fr. Gabriel J. Mensah officiating. Interment will follow at Hawley Cemetery. Pallbearers; Luke Ledwig, Mason Ledwig, Blake Cooley, Aaron Ward, Blake White and Clint Byrd. Memorials may be made to M.D. Anderson Hospital, 12515 Holcombe Blvd., Houston, TX 77030, IPH Hospice, 190 Abner Jackson Pkwy, Lake Jackson, TX 77566 or Hawley Cemetery, PO Box 343, Blessing, TX 77419.

Richard Karl “Rick” Lehmann, 86, passed away Saturday, March 20, 2021, at his home in Bay City, Texas. He is now resting peacefully in the presence of his Lord. A proud Lutheran and German, Rick was a loving husband to Brigitta and devoted father to their three sons, Rick, Mike, and Roland. Rick was born in June 8, 1934, in Bad Säckingen, Germany, the only child of Karl and Rosa Lehmann. In 1957, he immigrated to the United States to join his fiancée, Brigitta Maria Sedlacek, who had resettled from Germany to Kingsville, Texas, in 1956. Rick and Brigitta were married July 13, 1957, in Alice Texas. He was preceded in death by his son Roland Lehmann of Bay City, Texas; daughter-in-law Karen Lehmann of Broussard, Louisiana; his parents, Karl and Rosa Lehmann of Karlsruhe, Germany; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Mitzi and Karl Sedlacek of Karlsruhe, Germany, and sister-in-law and brother-in-law Edith and Gunther Erkeling. Rick is survived by his wife of 64 years, Brigitta Maria Sedlacek Lehmann, of Bay City; two sons, Richard Charles Lehmann of Broussard, Louisiana, and Michael Lehmann (Tracy) of New Braunfels, Texas; daughter-in-law Amy Lehmann of Bay City, Texas; grandchildren Karl Lehmann of New Orleans, Louisiana, Kimberly Lehmann (Matthew Lanclos) of Lafayette, Louisiana, Christopher Lehmann and Nicholas Lehmann of New Braunfels, Texas, and Terence Lehmann of Bay City, Texas; great-grandchildren Liam and Julianne Lanclos of Lafayette, Louisiana; sister-in-law Ingrid Sedlacek of Karlsruhe, Germany; and a nephew, Dieter Erkeling, also of Karlsruhe. Rick developed an understanding of electricity at a young age. After elementary school, he attended school in Germany to train as an electrical journeyman. He furthered his knowledge in trade school and took a job with the railroads in Karlsruhe, Germany. When Rick arrived in Kingsville, he worked for McCracken Electrical Service, the largest electrical contractor in South Texas at the time. In 1962, he was hired by Celanese as an operator. In 1964, he transferred with Celanese to Bay City, Texas, to be part of the electronic maintenance team at a plant under construction. There, he was promoted to senior electronic and instrument specialist, and he worked at the plant until his retirement in 1987. Always needing to keep his hands and mind busy, Rick and Brigitta bought a TV repair shop in Bay City, Texas, and established Rick’s TV. He operated the business along with his son Roland for nearly 30 years. Through the TV shop, Rick gained the trust of the community a skilled electrician and impressive all-around handyman. The guy could fix just about anything. When Rick wasn’t tinkering in the shop or improving the house that he and his wife bought in 1964, he and Brigitta enjoyed traveling across the U.S. and Europe. They enjoyed nature and taught their sons to appreciate the outdoors. He loved the San Antonio River Walk, German culture in the Texas Hill Country, and attending every Bay City Junior Service League Charity Ball since 1957. He was proud to have volunteered with the U.S. Civil Air Patrol, where he served as a second lieutenant of communications. He also was a licensed ham radio operator and served as president of the Golden Crescent Radio Club for many years. His radio knowledge was helpful in formulating plans of action when phone lines and other forms of communication were lost, especially during tropical storms. During hurricanes, Rick would stay behind – some would say heroically, others would say stubbornly – in his homemade bomb shelter in the backyard and so he could relay information to local and state officials. Friends remember Rick as a humble man who was fiercely loyal to the things that mattered to him. He always had a smile and joke ready to be shared. He was an avid stamp collector, a hobby he started as a boy. His collection includes stamps dating to the mid-1800s. Rick was one of a kind, a sweet man with a smile who would lend a hand when needed. His memory is cherished by those whose lives he touched, and he will be missed. Pallbearers will be Rick Lehmann, Mike Lehmann, Karl Lehmann, Matthew Lanclos, Christopher Lehmann, and Shawn Watkins. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the American Cancer Society, St. Peter Lutheran Church of Bay City General Fund, or the charity of your choice. The family wishes to thank Vicar Laura Anderson and the members of St. Peter Lutheran Church for their support.

A well known colored man named Berry Lipscomb, while at work on the river, fell into the water and was drowned late Tuesday afternoon. There were a number of co-laborers on the job when Berry fell into the river, but either they could not swim or were dazed so that they could not act before it was too late. Berry was about 50 or 55 years old, and well known about town, and liked by all, both white and black. He leaves a family in the north end of town, from where he was buried Wednesday.

News has been received of the death of Miss Rosie Litten, of Jasonville, Indiana. The many friends of Miss Litten regret to learn of her sudden death. She and her father had lived in Palacios a number of years, and had made a host of friends here. Miss Litten was a dutiful daughter to her aged father, a kind neighbor and friend to all who knew her. Mr. Litten died in their Palacios home only a few months ago and Miss Litten returned with the remains of her father to their home in Indiana, for his burial there, and now in this short space of time comes the message of the death of Miss Litten on January 28th. A severe attack of the flu seems to have been the cause of her demise, as she was not physically strong after caring for her father in his continued illness. Sympathy and kind thoughts are for the remaining loved ones of Miss Litten from friends in Palacios who knew her.

Arturo would spend several hours at the kitchen table with his Bible and Christian books study God’s word in preparation for the lesson on Sunday. His Sunday School class remembers the time he spent making sure that they understood the lesson and that all their questions were answered. He also preached, sang, danced and performed in dramas at church. He invented the “Arturo shuffle,” his signature dance move with both hands raised up moving up and down and his two index fingers pointed towards heaven. This dance move can be used with all praise and worship songs. Arturo also took the duty of cleaning and maintaining the church grounds seriously “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.” The church carpet had beautiful vacuum lines like the baseball field lines at Minute Maid Stadium. In his later years, he traveled to Mexico as a missionary. His church supported him by donating clothing, toys, bikes and other household items. He would give these donations to the less fortunate. Arturo has been serving God since he was a youth, and it is no surprise that he met his wife in church. Mom and her family were newcomers to church. During prayer time mom made the decision to accept Jesus as her Lord and Savior. Daddy prayed a beautiful prayer with her, and she peeked to see who it was that was praying for her. She was only able to see his shoes and she looked for the shoes after church. The rest is history. They were married in 1976 and he became her “Viejo” or scathing term “Viejo mugroso.” Outside of church dad and mom spent time at home cleaning up the yard, going out to eat and being with family. His kids and others remember Arturo for carrying a comb or a brush in his back pocket. The comb or brush came in handy during those childrearing days. He used it to spank his kids’ hands saying, “Da me la mano” and be ready to stick your hands out and then turn them over on the other side. His kids agree that they needed those spankings especially after acting spoiled rotten. His kids also remember their daddy’s nurturing side carrying them from one place to another after falling asleep. Arturo would pick them up and carry them to the car then off the car into the house. He did this until their feet were dragging on the ground. His grandchildren called him “Da,” “Grandpa” or “Dad.” Some of them saw him as their father, grandfather or both. He spent his time playing with them, taking them for rides up and down the street on his lawnmower or simply asking them how they were doing. From time to time some of them would live with him. The other things Arturo loved doing was going for drives in his truck enjoying the scenery around him with his windows rolled down and one arm hanging over the driver’s door. At home he would have the music blasting listening to Christian music. Arturo was also known as the “human trash disposable.” No food ever went to waste around him. He would consume all his food and then eat your leftovers or take them home to his little doggies, Cookie and Sandy. They would be waiting happily for him with their tails wagging seeing if he would have a treat in hand when walking through the door. Arturo is survived by his loving wife of 40 something years, Janie Jo Lopez The family will receive relatives and friends at 10:30am, Monday, April 26, 2021 at Rose of Sharon Pentecostal Church in Van Vleck, Funeral service will begin at 11:00am with Joy Limones and Louis Villarreal officiating. John was born to R. Q. Lusk and Ruth Anderson Lusk in Bay City, Texas on October 30, 1961. For all of his life, his birthday celebrations always included Halloween themes! As a child, he was active in Cub Scouts, the Little League and church activities at the Sixth Street Church of Christ. He graduated from Bay City High School in 1980, where he played bassoon in that Black Cat Band and was active in the speech club. After graduation he moved to Houston where he attended the University of Houston (Go Coogs!). He began a 35-year career in office administration for several different law firms. In 1997, he moved to Portland, Oregon to be nearer to his mother, brother and brother-in-law. He worked for several years at a local law firm before retiring in 2015. He was an active volunteer at Our House of Portland for over 20 years. He started as a dishwasher in the kitchen and finished his service working the reception desk and playing dominos with residents who were anxious for a small amount of attention (John gave it in buckets). He passed away unexpectedly in November 2020 leaving behind more friends than he could ever imagine who are devastated by his loss. His parents, grandparents, two aunts, an uncle, and one cousin preceded him in death. His brother, Robert Lusk, his brother-in-law, Christopher Bailey, who was also his best friend, as well as several cousins, an aunt and more friends than he ever knew, survive him. At his request, his remains are to be cremated and will be placed in his parent’s grave at a later date. A celebration of life will be planned in both Oregon and Texas, once it is safe to gather and share memories. Donations in John’s memory can be made to either Our House of Portland or the Oregon Food Bank.
