Bernard Kacer, 84, of Salem, AL passed away November 23, 2016. He was born April 3, 1932 in Frenstat, TX to the late Frank and Rosie Sobotik Kacer. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Tina Ashpaugh and four brothers, Edwin, Frank Jr., A. J. and Joe. Survivors include children, Steve (Theresa) Kacer; daughter, Vicki (Steve) Newsom; four sisters, Georgie Meyer, Margie Ames, Rosie Wendel and Annie Bundick; brothers, Edmond, Milton and Larry. Bernard served in the Army as a paratrooper in Fort Benning, GA. As a hobby, he enjoyed selling used cars, dancing, playing pool and a good game of cards. A very special thank you to a good friend, Grace Carden, who was by his side endlessly. A memorial mass officiated by Msgr. Jerry Cernoch will be held February 11, 2017 at 10 a. m., at our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Bay City. Interment services will follow at St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery in Blessing.

Melanie Renee Shows Kallina, 55, of Sweeny, Texas passed away Monday, September 4, 2017. She was born January 5, 1962 in Houston, Texas to Bobby Ray and Wendy Joan (Riley) Shows. She was a beloved wife, daughter, sister, mother of four, and grandmother of ten. Melanie was an avid animal rescue crusader and spent much of her time volunteering with several rescue organizations. She treasured her many years at the front desk of Bay City Veterinary Clinic and Equine Hospital. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Saturday, September 9, 2017 at Baker Funeral Home in West Columbia, Texas with Pastor John Price officiating. Burial followed at Sweeny Cemetery. Joe Kasinger, age 70, of Gatesville, TX passed away on Thursday, June 29, 2017. A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 2, 2017 at Calvary Baptist Church in Gatesville. Joe was born on September 9, 1946 in Mountain Home, AR to the late Ben and Ola Messick Kasinger. After high school he joined the United States Army and served for two years at Fort Hood, Texas. While at Fort Hood he met Maribeth McDonald and they married on September 16, 1967 in Cameron, TX. Together they had four daughters that they raised in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Joe was an ordained minister, who led his family in service to the Lord and others. Joe was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Maribeth; and a granddaughter, Mara Kate. Joe is survived by his daughters, JoBeth Pirtle and husband Gavin, Jenny Featherston and husband Robert, Annetta Quave and husband Royce, Julie Berry and husband Chris; three sisters; six brothers; 12 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Jay Kent Keller was found dead in his bed at 304 Tres Palacios in Foley Village by a neighbor, B. F. Warn, early Monday morning. An inquest held by Paul Geissler, Justice of the Peace of Precinct No. 3, assisted by Dr. John Simms and Chief Deputy E. T. Miller, death was due to "Coronary Occulsion." Funeral services were held in The First Baptist Church Sunday at 2:30 p. m. for Mr. Floyd Kidd, Rev. Rayford B. Harris and Rev. Jake Setser of Collegeport, officiated and burial was made in the Palacios Cemetery. Mr. Kidd who was 43 years of age, was born at Ranger, Texas, but had spent the greater part of his life in Palacios. He had been ill for some time and passed away at the local hospital Friday night. Dwight "Butch" Seeley Kientz, Jr. 65, of Bay City, passed away October 13, 2016. He was born December 10, 1950 in Brownsville, Texas to Dwight Seeley Kientz and Betty Hamby Kientz. Dwight proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. Dwight is preceded in death by his parents. Jimmie George Kilbride, 71, of Bay City, passed away July 18, 2016. He was born September 27, 1944 in Bay City, TX to George Perrenot Kilbride and Sylvia Grace Swinford Kilbride. Jimmie proudly served his country in both the US Army and US Air Force. He worked for the US Postal Service for many years as a mail carrier. Those who knew Jim, knew he never met a stranger and if he did it didn’t take long to become a friend. He would put a smile on any face, he gave the biggest bear hugs ever and was the best Paw Paw his grandchildren could have asked for! He will be missed and remembered by all that knew him. We love you dad, Paw Paw, husband and friend. Jimmie is preceded in death by his parents, and his daughter Mona Kilbride. Denise LaNell King was born June 6, 1970 in Palacios, Texas to Donald Lee and Mary Jane (Jenkins) King. She passed away March 31, 2017 after a long battle with seizures that finally took her from us. She lived each day knowing it may be her last. Brent T. Kirby, 75, of Wadsworth, Texas, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, November 19, 2016. Brent was born on October 9, 1941, in Bay City, Texas, to the late Lucille Goodall Kirby and Chester M Kirby. He married his high school sweetheart, Sue Werlla, after her graduation. They moved to Huntsville where he earned his BS degree in education. After graduating from Sam Houston, they moved back to his hometown of Wadsworth. Brent taught school for only one year but his students still came up and told him the impact he had in their lives. Brent was a farmer and rancher. He was honored as 2012 Matagorda County Cattleman of the Year. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, loved spending time with his family, and visiting with friends. Brent was a Christian man who lived his Christianity, a wonderful husband, and a hero to his daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He had a heart of gold and an infectious smile. His distinctive whistle meant rescue and safety. He was one of the very few that a negative word could not be spoken. His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were his pride and joy. Brent was an active member of First Baptist Church, Bay City for over 55 years. He lived a long, blessed life and will be missed dearly by his family and friends. Brent is preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Jerry Kirby. Verna Lee Nicely Kirchmeier, 92, beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, went peacefully home to be with her Heavenly Father and her loved ones, on August 4, 2017 in Allen, Texas. Verna Lee, the oldest of five children, was born February 12, 1925 in Payson, Oklahoma to William “Bill” Nicely and Beulah Gladys Moffitt. Verna Lee attended Meeker High School and after graduation she attended Connors State Agricultural College. She worked at the Meeker Post Office and during WWII worked at Douglas Aircraft. On June 16, 1951 she married Olen Harvey Kirchmeier. They later made their home in Bay City, Texas where Olen worked for Celanese Corporation and where they raised their family. During their time in Bay City, Verna Lee was a member of the Junior Service League and the First Baptist Church and worked several years at Bay City Bank and Trust. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her devoted husband, Olen Harvey Kirchmeier. She is survived by her children, Jim Kirchmeier and wife Marsha, Mark Kirchmeier, Sue Worsham and husband Tommy; grandchildren, Brook Bridwell and husband Jeremy, Jaime Zapata and husband Andy, Samantha Roos and husband Jake, Jared Kirchmeier and Casey Worsham; and six great grandchildren. The family wishes to thank all the caregivers and staff of Mustang Creek Estates for the care and devotion given to Verna Lee in the last years of her life. In addition their gratitude goes to Total Hospice and Palliative Care and their staff for the love and care they showed to her as well as to the entire family. Funeral services were held at the grave in the city cemetery last Thursday afternoon for Jacob Wilkerson Kirkpatrick, age 94 years. Rev. L. W. Greenhaw was officiating minister and burial was under the direction of the Palacios Funeral Home. Mr. Kirkpatrick was born in Tennessee, July 11, 1852 and came to Texas when two years old. On September 18 1881 he and Miss Laura Jane McReynolds were married and to this union three children were born. He is survived by two daughters, Lidia and Mabel Kirkpatrick and one sister, Fannie Estes, of Sachse Station, Texas. About twenty years ago the family came to Palacios, purchased property on east bay which has been their home ever since.

Mrs. Laura Jane Kirkpatrick, beloved wife of J. W. Kirkpatrick, passed away at her home on East Bay, early Monday morning, Dec. 10, after an illness of about three weeks. The deceased was born Jan. 1, 1863, at Rockwall, Texas, and was married to J. W. Kirkpatrick on September 18, 1881. To this union two children were born, Mrs. Otto Koch, of St. Louis and Mabel, who is at home. In early life Mrs. Kirkpatrick became a member of Seventh Day Adventists, to which belief she was loyal throughout the years that followed. The family moved to Palacios in 1923 and have made their home in the East Bay property, which they purchased, ever since. She became a member of the Wayside Club and was an ardent and faithful worker as long as health permitted. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Duffy Undertaking Parlor, conducted by Rev. G. F. Gillespie, of the Presbyterian church, after which burial took place in the city cemetery.

Dorothy Marie Kubecka Kirksey of Bay City, Texas left this world on Monday evening, November 7, 2016. She was born on October 23, 1933 in La Grange, Texas. She was the first born child of John George Kubecka Jr. and Sophie Psencik, and was a life long resident of Austin, Texas. She was the oldest of six children. Her parents were farmers. When Dorothy was 18 years old, she decided farm life was not for her so she moved to Austin for a new life. There she worked and lived with the John G. Adams family as a housekeeper, and to help raise their three children. Dorothy worked and lived with that family for almost 40 years. Dorothy married Fritz Kirksey in 1971. After five short years, she lost him due to lung cancer. They did not have children. The last 18 years of her life, Dorothy worked for the Tom and Carol Hatfield family in Austin. They loved and treated her as great as all the others in her life. Dorothy moved to Bay City on March 7, 2015. She lived at the Tejas Cove Apartment complex and everyone loved her. After a brief hospital stay, she was diagnosed with cancer and she became a resident at Matagorda Nursing and Rehab Center. Dorothy loved living there and was treated very well. Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Mrs. Agnes Ellisor (Charles). Surviving brothers and sisters are Dolores Kubecka of Bay City, Frank Kubecka of Alvin, Janie Kubecka Beals (William) of LaGrange and John Kubecka (Marylyn) of Bay City. The family will receive friends and relatives from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., Thursday, November 10, 2016 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. Betsy Coleman Kopecky, 78, died at home on March 8, 2017 after a lengthy illness. She was born on June 23, 1938 to the late Betsy Priday Coleman and James L. Coleman. She lived in Cameron, Texas until she was 12 years old when her family moved to Bay City, Texas.
Betsy graduated from Bay City High School in 1956 as valedictorian. In 1960, she graduated with honors from The University of Texas with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry. Following graduation, Betsy was employed by DuPont at The Experimental Station in Wilmington, Delaware. Later, she was employed by NASA at the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston, Texas. In 1962, she married Alfred A. Kopecky, M.D., and, in 1965, she left NASA to become a full-time mother. In 1969, the family moved to Victoria where Al practiced urology for 43 years.
During her years in Victoria, Betsy was devoted to numerous civic, social, and charitable organizations in the Victoria community. She was an active member of the Junior League of Victoria, Club 20, the Bronte Club of Victoria, Medical Alliance, and “Stitch and Bitch” sewing circle. When her children were young, she was also involved in a variety of school-related activities, including serving as a Girl Scout leader and PTA president. She served for many years on the board of the Victoria Symphony Orchestra. She was also a member of the board of the Nave Museum and a founding board member of the Children’s Discovery Museum .
Betsy is survived by her husband of 54 years and three children—Kathryn Schaper of Victoria, Susan Hellinger (Mark) of Houston, and Alfred James Kopecky ( Elizabeth ) of Victoria —and seven grandchildren: Julia, Luke, and Michael Schaper; Christopher and William Hellinger; and Katherine Jane and Penelope Kopecky. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, James L. Coleman, M.D., of Victoria .
The family is especially grateful to Larry Riedel, M.D., Richard Sawyers, M.D., and caregivers Kristina Morales and Janie Lopez.
The visitation will be at 5:30 p.m. Friday, March 10, 2017 at the Rosewood Funeral Chapel (3304 Mockingbird Lane ) followed by a rosary at 7:00 p.m. The funeral Mass will be at Our Lady of Victory Cathedral at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 11, 2017. A reception will be held following the service. Afterward, anyone may join the family at the burial at 4:00 p.m. at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Blessing, Texas.

Johnny Joe “Butch” Kovar, Jr., 75, passed away on October 10, 2016 at his home in Van Vleck, TX. He was born on September 6, 1941 in Bay City, TX to Johnnie Joe and Mildred Kovar. He graduated from Bay City High School in 1959. After graduating he was in the U. S. Army Reserves. Johnny worked many years at Celanese and Sav-Ko. In his retirement years, he enjoyed being a vendor at craft fairs all over Texas. He was an avid sports fan who especially loved the Bay City Black Cats, Texas Longhorns and Dallas Cowboys. He learned to cheer on the Aggies after two of his grandchildren became students at A&M. He was also a very proud member and manager of the Magic Caps Men’s softball team back in the day. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother: Jimmy Wayne Kovar. PALACIOS - James A. Kruse, 81, of Palacios passed away July 26, 2016. He was born April 1, 1935 in Thomaston, Texas to the late William Frank Kruse and Sadie Mae DeDear Kruse. James grew up in Palacios and had many stories of the days when as a young boy, soldiers from Camp Hulen filled the streets. As a teen, he worked at two of the local movie theaters and graduated from Palacios High school in 1952. He proudly served in the US Army in Korea where he met and married the love of his life, Yung Hi 'Mickey' Kruse, in 1960. He faithfully attended Our Redeemer Lutheran church. James worked as a machinist at Alcoa for 30 years and spent evenings and weekends fixing appliances all over town. Many times he would be paid in garden vegetables. He enjoyed fishing, karaoke, and played many musical instruments with his brothers and often with local greats such as Tommy Tolleson. He was a kind man loved by many and always willing to help. He will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife of 55 years Yung Hi 'Mickey' Kruse of Palacios; son Jamie Kruse and his wife Haley of Palacios and four grandchildren Tristan, Steffen, Ashtyn and Brooklyn Kruse. Aaron Wayne Alexander Kubeczka, 37, of Bay City passed away February 5, 2017. He was born July 17, 1979 in Houston, Texas.
He is survived by his wife: Karla Anderson Kubeczka of Bay City; one brother: Adam Thomas Jedadiah Kubeczka of San Diego, CA; and Grandmother: Adelia Kubeczka of Rosenberg. Aaron was preceded in death by his father: Daniel Kubeczka, and grandfather: Adam Kubeczka.
A rosary will be recited at 10:30 AM Saturday, February 11, 2017 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Chapel. Funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM. He will be interred at Cedarvale Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Glenn, Gary, Adam, Kyle, & Jordan Kubeczka, and Jon Ed Anderson.
