For almost 60 years they continued to be spectacular dancing partners, moving together and apart with graceful and joyful style and intention, both on the dance floor and throughout daily life. Bernice delighted in the adventure of travel and she and Art took up temporary residence in a variety of places as he pursued his military career. After his death in 2002, Bernice continued to season her long and useful life traveling with family and friends. Bay City, Texas

Jack Anthony Kelley was born to Jack A. Kelley and Mary C. Barker Kelley on January 1, 1940 in Iowa Park, Texas. He was a determined, outgoing, and hard-headed child who constantly kept everyone around him on their toes. These are traits that he instilled in the lives of everyone he touched.

He met a striking young lady at Texas A&I Kingsville and fell head over heels in love. He married Judith Elizabeth Cox on September 1, 1962. They were married for 61 years and stood together through life’s hills and valleys, trials and triumphs. One of Jack’s greatest honors was serving our great nation from 1963-1968 during the Vietnam Era as a B52 Navigator in the US Air Force. His family can still hear him singing “The U.S. Air Force”.

Jack was active in his community as a member of First Baptist Church of Devine as a Deacon, choir member, and a youth Sunday school teacher.

Jack’s hobbies included fishing, skiing, and traveling. He loved being in the driver’s seat and on the CB during the long drives with his family. He also volunteered his time ministering to those who were incarcerated. Most importantly, Jack was saved in 1973 while reading Psalm 34 and dedicated his life to serving the Lord. He wrote a note in his Bible saying: “It is my firm belief that from the moment I was saved, my job is to BECOME MORE LIKE JESUS until the moment he takes me home. To know him and make him known.”

John R. Keys

March 8, 1945 – October 11, 2022

John Robert Keys, loving brother, father and husband, passed away at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, Texas on the afternoon of Tuesday, October 11, 2022.

John is survived by brothers Larry Keys and David Keys, sister Barbara Keys, daughter Laura Keys, sons Randy Keys and John Robert Keys, Jr., and wife Laurie March Keys of Fort Smith, Arkansas. John was preceded in death by his previous wife, Erin Hutchison Keys, of Bay City, Texas.

Born in Santa Barbara, California, John’s family moved all over the state of Texas until finally settling in Alice, where John attended Dubose Junior High and William Adams High School. Known for his epic end-zone-to-end-zone punting skills, “Jarrin’ Johny Keys” was a force to be reckoned with as both a Fullback and Defensive End for William Adams. He was a teammate of NFL Hall-Of-Famer Gene Upshaw at Texas A&I University in Kingsville and completed his post-graduate work at Corpus Christi State University.

Although he loved old movies, especially Westerns, and always wanted to be a Hollywood stunt man, John translated his singular brand of daring into his career as a lifetime educator. John loved teaching fourth grade at Schallert Elementary in Alice before moving to Bay City, where he served as a much beloved principal at Linnie Roberts Elementary and McAllister Junior High, later becoming superintendent of schools in Sterling City, Texas and then returning to serve in the same capacity in Van Vleck.

John loved all the students under his stewardship and frequently expressed how much he missed being in the classroom with them. Forever loyal and willing to bear the burden for everyone he loved, John’s fondest memories were of service – from guarding the welfare of his two brothers throughout their childhoods to overseeing the education and guidance of thousands of young hearts and minds across the state of Texas. He believed in treating everyone fairly and equally with love and respect. As a result, he became a greatly revered educator who made tremendous impact on all the administrators, teachers and students in his care.

He always jumped at the chance to sing along with Bobby Darin, Hank Williams, Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, Jerry Lee Lewis, Gene Autry, and Elvis Presley and could cut a rug with the best of them when the opportunity presented itself. He will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by all who knew him.

A private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider sending a gift to the American Parkinson Disease Association at http://www.apdaparkinson.org.

David Patrick Kucera

August 19, 1940 - November 10, 2023

David Patrick Kucera, born August 19, 1940, completed his earthly journey on November 10, 2023.

David’s life was a good one. He faithfully served God as a lifelong Catholic and a truly caring man. When David said he would do something, he never failed to follow through.

David was a role model to his two sons as he showed them his love and instilled in them a discipline to be honest, respectful, and prepared for life. The love and security he gave as a husband are treasures forever cherished.

Reared as the oldest of three boys, he did not know how much he wanted a girl to call him “Dad” until he gained a daughter-in-law. He wholeheartedly enjoyed sharing his August birthday with his grandson. The special bond he held with his granddaughter, or as he named her his “Bodyguard”, meant the world to him.

David grew up farming in Wharton County, served in both the U. S. Army and the U. S. Air Force, and then worked in the oil and gas pipeline industry for over 35 years. His mechanical genius served him in good stead as he could fix anything that broke and build things that were needed.

On June 11, 1966, he married Suzanne Saha. Their wedding began with morning Mass at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Blessing, lasted through the day with a crowd of guests feasting and celebrating, and culminated with the Joe Gavranovic band’s playing all afternoon and for dancing till midnight.

David and Suzanne truly were partners, destined to live their lives together. They reared two sons, David Kucera and Jason Kucera, who have made them proud. When son David married Inez, she became their wonderful daughter. Predeceased by his parents, Vit and Cecilia Kucera, and brother Ronald, David is survived by Suzanne, Jason, David and Inez, granddaughter Krystal, grandson Joshua and Cierra, and great grandson Soren. He is also survived by his brother Jerry and Stephanie and his dear friend Terevea Williams.

As we who cherish him thank him for the never-failing love he gave us and say our earthly farewells, we know that life is merely a road to eternity. We look forward to joining David in eternal happiness.
