Mrs. Johnson was born in Alta Vista, Kansas, January 14, 1876. She attended school there and taught for a number of years. In May 11, 1901, she was married to E. I. Johnson. In 1908 they moved to Palacios, Prairie Center Community, where they have resided for 42 years.

To this union were born two sons, Spencer and Leo, the latter preceding her in death in March, 1944.

In her early life she united with the Methodist Church of which she was so faithful to attend until March of this year, when she fell and was confined to her home.

In spite of her suffering she was patient and thoughtful of others, and always had something humorous to say to those who visited her.

She was a charter member of the Prairie Center Home Demonstration Club and attended as long as her health would permit.

She is survived by her husband, E. I. Johnson; son, Spencer; and four grandchildren, Lowell, Kenneth, Annette and Nancy Johnson; also two sisters, Mrs. Hulda Fisher and Miss Myrtle Hawes, of Alta Vista, Kansas, and a brother, E. N. Hawes of Blessing, Texas.

In Memory Of Mrs. Mildred M. Johnson

Of her it can be said she was beloved by all. Not only was she faithful to her home and loved ones, but she truly did as the Master said “Do unto others as ye would have them do unto you.” In the community where she lived she went about ministering to the sick as long as she was physically able, comforting the bereaved, and all through the years remembering the children and friends on many occasions. We know Jesus has prepared for her a beautiful mansion which she so richly deserves. Her Christian Spirit of love and service to others has endeared her to all who knew her and will long linger in our memories.—Contributed.

T. W. Jones

T. W. Jones was born in the year 1872 and passed away in an automobile accident at Huntsville on Wednesday, Oct. 13th. He spent the early years of his life on a farm in Michigan. His father and mother were Presbyterians, and he joined the Presbyterian Church at an early age. During his early years he was taught the principles of Christian living by his mother, and he attributed much of his success in life to her. When a young man he began work in the oil fields, and gradually rose to be Superintendent for the Humphreys Oil Co. and General Superintendent for the Pure Oil Co. He was straightforward in all his ways. He always remembered his early experiences in the various oil fields, and when he rose to a responsible position he treated the men under him with sympathetic fairness and the men in their turn liked and respected him. He was strictly honorable in his private life, and scrupulous and upright in his business dealings. He took a deep interest in the public life of the Community, and was inclined to be stern with those who fell below the standard he set himself and others. He was a friend of the poor, and often expressed himself sternly about those who took an unfair advantage of others. T. W. Jones took a deep interest in oil development in this district and his friends will miss him.

The funeral service was held in the Palacios Funeral Home, and the sermon was preached by the Rev. George F. Gillespie. There was a large funeral cortege, friends being present from Austin, Huntsville, Bay City and neighboring towns. The pall-bearers were as follows: Messrs. Jim Lewis, L. McDonald and W. F. Tetts of Bay City, and Messrs. Bowden, R. J. Sisson and Lawson of Palacios. The deep sympathy of the entire community goes out to Mrs. Jones who is at present in Austin in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh B. Taylor who have been very intimate friends for some years.

Victor Jurek of Ashby Badly Burned In An Explosion

Victor Jurek, while working Monday afternoon in a rice field near Ashby, was severely burned when the tank of his tractor exploded. Mr. Jurek was refilling the tank while the motor was still running, the gasoline splashing on the manifold and the explosion resulted. He was more seriously burned on the back as he evidently realized the tank was going to explode and turned to run when his clothes caught fire. His right hand and left leg were also more severely burned as he attempted to remove his clothing, which would have saved him from being so badly hurt. He was given first aid treatment by Dr. J. E. Simons and son, Dr. B. E. Simons in Bay City before being removed to the Caney Valley Hospital in Wharton.

Dr. J. E. Simons gave us the report from the Caney Valley Hospital attendants this morning that Mr. Jurek was resting well.
