On Saturday, May 7, 1966, Edith Marie Johnson and Earnest Paul Johnson, Sr. announced the birth of their baby boy, Earnest Paul Johnson, Jr. Earnest grew up learning to work on cars and trucks with his father and developed a passion for rebuilding them from scratch. He learned to drive his father's 18-wheeler and truck and looked forward to helping his father in the hay field, driving tractors to make his own money at an early age. He also enjoyed learning to cook and bake desserts from scratch, as well as going hunting with his brother and neighbor, Arthur James, with their new BB guns. Growing up, he enjoyed walking to the Hillard pool, attending the skating rink, and going to the "Front," where Mr. Gatti's Pizza, movies, and the ice cream parlor were located. Earnest was also known for throwing the best house parties in the neighborhood. He attended McAllister Jr. High School and graduated from Bay City High School, both in Bay City, TX. Earnest was a member of the FFA Club in high school, where he raised chickens and a bull. He won first place with his bull during the judging at the rodeo and received a belt buckle as well as a scholarship fund for his bull. Earnest had a love for farming, riding horses, and attending rodeos from time to time. He also enjoyed racing trucks and attending mud races. Following high school, his passion for working on cars and trucks led him to UTI Auto Mechanic School in Houston, Texas. After graduation, he worked as an entrepreneur for over twenty-five years doing what he loved. One of the funny memories of Earnest was him teaching his baby sister, Lisa, how to drive a standard-shift car on McAllister Road late one evening. She came to a stop sign and hit the clutch instead of the brake. They flew into the ditch, bounced out, and ended up in the McAllister football practice field. Earnest and Lisa jumped out of the car, scared that their mom’s new car was banged up. Earnest drove the car to his friend's home to wash the dirt and grass from underneath before taking it back home. Earnest and Lisa thought they were home free, but the next day, their Uncle John D. Fisher asked their mother Edith, “Was that your car I spotted in the McAllister football field on my way home late yesterday evening?” His mother immediately called for Earnest Jr. (Lil Jr.) to come in for questioning, while Lisa fled out of the back door to avoid facing the consequences. As a child, Earnest attended St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Van Vleck, TX. He later united with Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. His favorite scriptures were Philippians 3:13-14, Philippians 4:13, and Galatians 2:20. It was in the Word of God that he found peace and guidance. Earnest absolutely loved each of his grandchildren and all of his children. He was a man who loved visiting his family members, providing for his kids, enjoying life activities with family and friends, fishing, barbecuing at the spur of the moment, having family gatherings, and repairing family and friends' vehicles free of charge. He enjoyed eating soul food, menudo, pizza, strawberry cake, strawberry malts, burgers, and fries. He also enjoyed watching old-school black movies and westerns, as well as TV shows like Bonanza, Gunsmoke, The Jeffersons, Good Times, and any new black shows. Some of his favorite celebrities included Richard Pryor, Louis Gossett, Jr., Dolemite, and John Wayne. He was a Houston Oilers-turned-Houston Texans football fan. He looked forward to traveling to places like Minnesota, St. Louis, Louisiana, Arizona, Oklahoma, Mexico, Alabama, and Georgia. He was that “cool uncle dude” who made his family laugh and was known for being straight-up honest and direct. He would often say, “If you know better, you will do better,” and “Pay attention to what older folks tell you—you can always learn something new.” Earnest was a mechanic at heart. He could often be found spending time with his father, driving hay trucks in the field, or assisting his father with working on family and friends' vehicles. The joy he would get from fixing a vehicle without any help from his father was a highlight of those moments. Earnest would always jump in his truck and travel all over just to visit his cousins, uncles, and aunties on both sides of his family. Although he experienced some health challenges, he loved his family and made sure to always stay in touch with everyone until the day he passed, Monday, March 17, 2025. There are so many great memories that it’s impossible to recount them all. Those who will often reflect on these and other precious memories include his children: Earnest P. Johnson III (Tasha) of Bay City, TX, Sharica Johnson (Quinn Burnett) of Houston, TX, Za'Quona Johnson of Houston, TX, Tiffany Abbott (Tyrell Edwards) of Bay City, TX, Sharail Johnson (James Dykes, III) of Freeport, TX, and Elizabeth Johnson of Houston, TX; siblings: Lisa Johnson Ade-Oni (Oyesile) of Rosenberg, TX, Michael Boone, Sr. (Courtney Stewart) of Van Vleck, TX, Hattie Bivens-Lemons (Nelson) of West Columbia, TX, and Marvin Jones of Hinkle Ferry, TX, along with countless nieces, nephews, loved ones, and friends. Earnest had a special place in his heart for his one and only niece, Jakya Taylor. Earnest loved her and made sure she knew it every day when he called to talk. Earnest was, and will always be, her "Uncle Dude." Earnest was preceded in death by his mother, Edith Marie Johnson; father, Earnest Paul Johnson, Sr.; maternal grandparents, Willie Pearl and JL James, Sr.; paternal grandparents, Lillie and Edward Johnson; brother, James Edward Johnson; nephew, Jameel La'Scott Woods; uncles: J.L. James, Andrew James, Sr., and Dennis Johnson Sr.; aunts: Ernestine Murray and Tiny Faye James. Services Visitation: Friday, March 28, 2025, 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, Lakeside Memorial Chapel, 3318 Ave D, Bay City, TX 77414 Funeral Service: Saturday, March 29, 2025, 11:00 AM, Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, 1208 Avenue C, Bay City, TX 77414
