Rose Lee Hamilton
September 8,
1948 ~ June 11, 2018
Rose Lee Davis was born
in Vallejo, California on September 8, 1948 to the late Freddie Lee
Davis Sr and Anita Belle Davis. Rose was the first of ten children
(6 girls, 4 boys)-all of whom became “her babies”.
Rose was born in
Vallejo, California. Her educational journey started in California,
but continued in Texas when the family relocated to Houston. The
family’s last move was to Brookshire, Texas in 1965 where Rose
attended Ralph J. Bunch H.S. for her junior year. In 1966, she
graduated from Royal High School.
Rose attended Texas
Southern University in Houston, Texas. While there, she became quite
involved in the Black Power Movement, but took a time out to marry
Robert Hamilton on December 31, 1973 in an African Themed wedding
ceremony. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition and went
on to become a Registered Dietitian. Four years later, God blessed
Rose and Robert with a beautiful baby girl, Che N’Kim.
Rose was a leader, a
fighter, and a survivor. As a toddler, she had to fight to live
after being badly burned in a household accident. She spent weeks at
the hospital. She bore the scar of that incident for the rest of her
life. As the oldest sister, she had to fight to keep the younger
ones in line because the older one was always in charge. Before she
left home, she took odd jobs and always shared her earnings with her
siblings. She was always overly generous. Rose was also a breast
cancer survivor.
She enjoyed LIFE and was
always the life of the party. In fact, wherever she went she brought
the party with her. She loved fishing, dancing, traveling, and
telling jokes-even though she wasn’t very good at it. And if you
ever heard her tell the “Hee Haw” joke, you’d know what we mean.
Rose wanted everyone to
know that she was an Educated, Independent, Black woman. But her
daughter and her three grandsons stole her heart. She loved them
unconditionally.
She was christened in
the Methodist Church at an early age, baptized at Mount Zion Baptist
church as a teenager. As an adult, she chose to follow the doctrine
of Jehovah as a Jehovah's Witness. When illness demanded, she
relocated to Brookshire, Texas, and joined St Paul's Baptist Church
under watch care.
She is preceded in death
by both parents, Freddie Lee and Anita Belle Davis, husband Robert
Hamilton, 3 brothers-Herman Davis, Leroy Isaac Davis, Tommy Lee
Davis and one sister-Regina Davis.
She leaves to cherish
her memory: a daughter Che` N’Kim. Hamilton-Williams of Sacramento,
CA; three grandsons-Elijah Williams, Isaiah Hamilton-Williams and
Johnny Williams all from Sacramento, CA; two brothers-Freddie Lee
Davis, Jr. (Polly) of Brookshire, TX; Harrison J. Davis (Mary C) of
Houston, TX; and four sisters - Rita Campbell of Houston, TX; Diana
Thornton (Bruce) of Houston, TX; Donita Davis of Brookshire, TX;
Delores Light (Benny) of Brookshire, TX; devoted “sister cousin and
life companion” Loretta Purnell of Oakland, CA; friend and cousin
Gladys Ryan of Vallejo, CA; and a host of nieces, nephews,
relatives, and friends.
