vegetable gardens, and taught all her children to garden. She also
grew African violets, propagating thousands, giving away and selling
her plants, and then caring for all the plants at the assisted care
facility where she and Wilbert lived later in life.
Helma loved fishing and walking on the beach, as well as fishing at
her childhood farm in Winchester. She took up oil painting late in
life and painted scenes of wildlife and nature and flowers, and her
childhood memories. She and Wilbert passed on their passion for
fishing and the outdoors to all their children. They enjoyed many
wonderful times at the beach with her sisters and brother and their
families, and even her parents Otto and Adelheid Noack.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock for Miss
Tenie Holmes whose 78th birthday would have been August 17th. The
services were from the First Baptist Church and interment was in
Cedarvale Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Connie Anderson, Laddie Lowe, Frank Lewis, Rowland
Rugeley, Dick Bachman, Tom J. Poole.
She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Mary E. Eddleman of Rosebud.
Miss Holmes' death came suddenly Friday afternoon at the Matagorda
General Hospital. Although at the hospital for treatment, Miss
Holmes was not considered dangerously ill and death came suddenly
and unexpectedly.
The gracious lady who had closed but over a half century of
teaching, probably had taught members of every old family in the
city and many new families as her kindergarten work continued long
after she resigned from the public schools. In fact she was actively
engaged in this work this year.
She had attended school as a girl in Durango, Texas from 1883 - 1891
and then entered Baylor University for a two year period. When she
was sixteen she taught in the Hawes family at Saluria Pass. She
taught in Bay City from 1894 through 1924 and she had also taught in
may places in the county.
She was a member of the Baptist Church, the O.E.S., and the United
Daughters of the Confederacy. While teaching in Bay City she
continued her college work during the summer months and attended
Baylor University in the summers of 1914, 1916 and 1920.
Miss Holmes had been active in her school work and also in civic
affairs and church and club affairs. Her keen interest in everything
caused her to ever have a youthful outlook on all problems yet her
age and wisdom afforded her a mellow approach to the problems.

Claud Irven Hughes
Young Man Killed
Saturday night, about
midnight, Young Claud Hughes was shot and killed at a
Negro house in the south-end of town. It is said that
just after purchasing a jumper and getting a check
cashed at one of the dry goods stores about 10 o’clock,
he walked up the street with some other young men, and
said to one of them: “Boys, wait here till I come back;
a Negro man has my pistol and he is going to leave town,
I must go get it before he goes – I will be back here
shortly.” Another statement is that Hughes represented
himself as an officer, and the Negro, John Tiger,
invited him to come inside, when the shooting occurred.
Soon thereafter four shots
were heard, and officers found Claud’s dead body in the
house of a Negro. It is said his penknife was found in a
bureau drawer, and as he had no money in his pockets, it
is surmised that after he was killed his knife and money
were taken from his pockets. The Negro woman, Mamie
______, was arrested and lodged in jail, as was also
Nathan Williams, the Negro jitney driver who was in the
house at the time. But they refuse to talk of the
affair. The Negro who is supposed to have fired the
fatal shots, John Tiger, escaped, but went to the home
of Farmer Salley, near Clemville, where he had been
working, and surrendered, stating he had killed Hughes.
Salley telephoned the Sheriff who went after the
prisoner and took him to the Houston jail.
John acknowledged his part
in the shooting – said he used his 44 while the woman
shot him twice with a 38 pistol, which belonged to
Hughes. One shot struck Hughes just over his right eye,
one to left of nose, one in the neck, and the fourth in
the side, either of which, it is said, would have proven
fatal. The wounded man lived till the officers reached
him, but he could not tell them anything of the tragedy,
and died in a few minutes.
The remains of young
Hughes were interred in the Cedarvale Cemetery Sunday
afternoon, with the funeral taking place from the home
of Mr. George Kelley; Mrs. Kelley being the mother of
the deceased. Claud Hughes was just a little over 21
years of age and was well known among the older
residents of the community. Heartfelt sympathies of many
friends go out to his bereaved mother in this hour of
her deep sorrow.
