Anne Fabian Hale, 76, of Nordheim,
Texas, passed away December 3, 2004 at the Victoria Nursing & Rehab.
Center in Victoria. She was born October 6, 1928 in Port Lavaca,
Texas to Joe J. Fabian, Sr. and Cecilia Turner Fabian. She married
William Riley "Buster" Hale. Throughout her life she had resided in
Hallettsville, Riviera, Nordheim, and Victoria. |
The infant of Frank Hale and wife died Friday and was buried in the cemetery here. The bereft parents have the sympathy of the entire community.

Our community was very much shocked at the death of Miss Iva Hale which occurred at one o’clock Thursday afternoon after an illness of about a week, from appendicitis. Deceased was a very bright and lovable young lady much admired by her acquaintances and was only sixteen years of age. The funeral services were conducted in the church here by Rev. Yockey, at four o’clock Friday afternoon, after which the body was laid to rest in the Midfield cemetery, just north of town. The bereaved relatives have our deepest sympathy.

Graveside services for John Edward Hale, 83, of Midfield will be held at 2 p. m. Wednesday at Midfield Cemetery, Midfield, with the Rev. F. W. Jones officiating. Mr. Hale was born Sept. 12, 1903, in Hale Town, Tenn., to Sam F. and Minnie Belle Price Hale and died at 11:20 p. m. May 10, 1987, at Matagorda General Hospital. He was a lifelong resident of Midfield. Survivors include a daughter, Bobbie Baker of Matagorda; a sister, Ruby Vineyard of Manvel, Texas; a brother, Raymond Hale of Manvel; two grandchildren, Robert Baxter of Markham and Barbara Stallings of Matagorda; and four great-grandchildren. Pallbearers include Robert Baxter, Johnny Roden, Joe Warn, Buddy Stallings, Fred Hale Jr. and Jack Roden. Honorary pallbearers include W. D. Warn and Gene Woodson. Graveside services for Leona Loretta Hale of Midfield will be held at 2 p. m. Friday in the Midfield Cemetery with the Rev. Dan Meaders officiating. Mrs. Hale, 82, was born on Oct. 21, 1901, in Blessing. She was the daughter of Henry L. Fortenberry and Waley Moore. She was a life-long resident of Midfield and a member of the Methodist church. She died on Jan. 11, 1984, in Wagner General Hospital in Palacios. She is survived by her husband, John E. of Midfield; one daughter, Bobbie Baker of Alvin, one son, Eddie Fortenberry of Midfield; two sisters, Lucille Timberlake of Austin and Leola Smith of Wadsworth; two brothers, Eugene Fortenberry of Moscow and Forest Fortenberry of Texas City; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Denton Fortenberry, Mike Smith, John D. Hunt, Gary Hunt, Johnny Roden and Gary Joe Garner. Taylor Brothers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Minnie Bell Hale, 62, who passed away at the family residence in Midfield, Monday evening at 8 o’clock, was buried this afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Midfields Cemetery with Rev. Belcher of Markham, officiating. Taylor Bros. were in charge of the arrangements. Mrs. Hale is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Cora Woodson and Miss Ruby Hale of Midfields and four sons, John and Raymond of Midfields, Fred Hale in the South Pacific and Sgt. Hale in Holland. One brother. Louis Christian of Morris, Ala., also survives.

Miss Myrtle Hale, age 33 years, 10 months and 18 days, daughter of County Commissioner and Mrs. Sam Hale died at the residence of her family in Midfield, Texas, Saturday night at 9:30 p. m. after an illness of some eighteen months. She is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Hale, three sisters: Mrs. Cora Woodson, Mrs. Maude Warn and Miss Ruby Hale, four brothers: John, Raymond, Fred and Paul Hale of Midfield. Funeral services were held Sunday evening at the family residence in Midfield. Interment was in Midfield cemetery under the direction of Taylor Bros. Matagorda County Tribune, August 18, 1932 Our community was again saddened by a visit from the death angel, Saturday evening, in the passing of Miss Myrtle Hale, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. F. Hale, after an illness of several months during which time everything that could be done for her recovery, was done by her loved ones and friends. The funeral took place Sunday afternoon at four o’clock, the service being held at the family home, conducted by Reverend Gaston of Markham and interment in our local cemetery, attended by a large number of relatives and friends of the family. The following obituary, written by a friend, was read at the service, which was kindly given for this notice. “Myrtle Hale was born at Guild, Tenn., Sept. 25, 1898. She lived there until Jan., 1913, when her parents moved to Midfield, Texas. She was the eldest one of Mr. and Mrs. Hale's children and has always been at home with her parents. She has been a dutiful and loving daughter and a generous and affectionate sister. Myrtle has a large circle of friends and acquaintances, and was well liked by all who knew her and in turn loved every one. On the fourteenth of February, 1932, she was taken ill and has not known a well day since. She has been confined to her bed for several months and at 9:50 o’clock, Saturday evening, Aug. 13th she passed away, at the age of thirty-three years, ten months and eighteen days. She will be missed by a great number of relatives and friends. She is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. F. Hale, three sisters, Mrs. Cora Woodson, Mrs. Maude Warn and Miss Ruby Hale, and four brothers, John, Raymond, Fred and Paul. A brother and a sister passed on before her, the sister dying in infancy and the brother at the age of eight.”

Funeral services for Olive Grace Hale, 92, of Midfield are scheduled for 2 p. m. Friday, Dec. 28 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home with Rev. Michael Zimmerman officiating. Burial will follow in Midfield Cemetery. Mrs. Hale passed away Monday, Nov. 24 in Wharton. She was born Olive Grace Aiken to Hannah and Knox Aiken on May 28, 1905 in Holyoke, CO. She came to Texas in a covered wagon in 1906 and was a longtime resident of Matagorda County. She married Ves Hale in 1922 and spent her lifetime as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother. Her love and devotion to her family was central to her life. This is a treasured legacy to those who survive her. After her children were grown, she spent many hours and received much pleasure from crocheting caps for children at M. D. Anderson Hospital. Mrs. Hale was an active 50 year member of the FCE Club in Midfield. She was preceded to death by her husband Ves Oswell Hale and by two children, Gladys Ester Steck and William Riley Hale. She is survived by six children, Loretta Carter of Midfield, Clarence Hale of Atascosa, Bertha Denbow and husband Francis of Midfield, Walter Hale and wife Carolyn of Bay City, Kathryn Dean and husband Donald of Caldwell and Patricia Hale of Mexia. She is also survived by eighteen grandchildren, twenty-four great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren. The family would like to express special thanks to Doctors Stephens, Cowart, Yankowsky and the nursing staff at the Gulf Coast Medical Center, especially Nurse Anderson on the second floor and Debbie Garcia on the third floor for the care given to Mrs. Hale. Following a brief illness from double pneumonia, County Commissioner, Sam F. Hale passed away at his home in Midfield Sunday morning at 2:45 o’clock just one full week before he was to surrender his office to his successor. Mr. Hale has represented Precinct No. 4 for many years and became widely known over the county and section. Up until a few days ago he had been in good health. His death will prove to be a sad surprise to all who knew him in the prime of his activities. The funeral was held this afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at Midfield. A number of county officials and others attended from here. Mr. Hale came to Matagorda County from Tennessee about 20 years ago and settled on a farm near Midfield. Surviving him besides his wife are four sons and three daughters. Those are John, Leonard, Paul and Raymond and Mrs. Cora Woodson and Miss Ruby, all of Midfield and Mrs. Maud Warn of Refugio, also four brothers, living in Tennessee and New York and two sisters, both of whom reside in New York. Matagorda County Tribune, December 27, 1934 “Midfield News” The whole community was saddened at this Christmas season in the passing of Sunday morning of Mr. Sam F. Hale, who had been ill for several weeks with pneumonia at his home here. The funeral took place Monday afternoon with service in the home conducted by Rev. Robert Payne and interment in the local cemetery. Walker-Matchett undertakers of Bay City in charge. Mr. Hale had served as county commissioner for precinct No. 4 the past eight years. Active pallbearers were Messrs. E. C. Baker of Matagorda, Till Bond of Bay City, George Harrison of Palacios, fellow commissioners, also Mr. John Rother, Mr. Jas. W. Gartrell and Mr. E. O. Taulbee of Bay City. A. large number of friends from different points in the county attended, the funeral cortege which extended from town to the cemetery being the largest ever seen here. Mr. Hale was 53 years old and he with his family had lived in this community the past 21 years coming here from Jasper, Tenn. He leaves his wife and seven children, one son and one daughter preceded him to the great beyond. The children living are four sons, John, Raymond, Paul and Fred, and three daughters, Cora, Maud and Ruby. Relatives here to attend the funeral were Messrs. Pete Hale, Wm. Hale of Bonham, V. O. Hale of Commerce, Frank Hale and family and Mr. Thos. P. Hale of Bay City, Mr. A. L. Hammond and family of Markham, Mr. Bud Hale and family from Francitas. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved.

Ves Oswell Hale, 86, Midfield, died Thursday in Wagner General Hospital in Palacios. He was born in Fannin County, October 29, 1892. He was a lifelong resident of Midfield and a veteran of World War I. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Gladys Steck. Survivors include his wife, Grace Hale of the home, four daughters, Loretta Carter, Bay City, Bertha Denbow, Markham, Kathryn Dunn, Austin and Patricia Hale, Mexia, three sons, Buster, Rivera, Clarence, Atascosa and Hoss Hale of Bay City, two sisters, Lela Burnett, Garland and Pearl Hammond, Angleton, 20 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2 p. m. Sunday, with the Rev. J. R. Gwin officiating. A resident of Riviera since 1963, he was retired from ARCO Oil and Gas Co. He was a veteran of World War II where he served in the U. S. Marine Corps. Clara Hammond, 91, resident of Garvin, passed away Thursday, November 1, 2001 at McCurtain Memorial Hospital in Idabel. She was born July 14, 1910 at Normangee, Texas, to Frederick and Annie Casper. Clara had made her home in McCurtain County since 1985, moving here from Brazoria County, Texas. She was a homemaker and raised ten children. Clara loved flowers and working in her garden. She also loved the Lord and spent many hours reading her Bible. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a daughter, Lillian Brannan; three sisters and three grandchildren. Grapeland, Texas — Jean Trogdon Hammond,
61, passed away on Friday, August 5, 2005, in Houston, after an 8
year courageous battle with leukemia and breast cancer. Lillian was
born August 13, 1943, in Kilgore, Texas. She was a member of Lake
Baptist Church in Grapeland, was a longtime member of First Baptist
Church in West Columbia and West Columbia Chapter #705 of the
Eastern Star, Executive Secretary for BASF for 30 years where she
received the Paul Harris Fellow Award, and was a Dale Carnegie
Leader. Jean will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

ANGLETON—Services for Michael Alan Hammond, 9, were conducted today at 11 a. m. at St. Basil’s Catholic Church with the pastor, the Rev. Roy Ogerro officiating. Graveside rites were conducted at 3 p. m. in the Hammond Cemetery at Midfield. Rosary was recited Tuesday. Michael, a student at Westside Elementary School, died Tuesday (Nov. 3, 1981) at the family residence on County Road 48. Survivors include the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Michael H. Hammond; two sisters, Debra Kathleen and Lucinda Dawn Hammond all of Angleton; grandparents, Viola Wakefield of Rosharon and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Hammond of Angleton; great-grandparents, Mrs. A. L. Hammond and Mrs. J. T. Williams, both of Angleton. Pallbearers were Pat Hammond, David Hammond, Bruce Bohannan and Bob Garrett. Mark Wendel was an honorary pallbearer. Dorothy Powell Brown Harvey, 71, of Point Comfort, passed away February 28, 2005. She was born July 19, 1933, in Blessing, Texas, to the late Joel Herman and Minnie L. Cohn Powell. Dorothy was a charter member of First Baptist Church in Point Comfort, Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star of Port Lavaca, Past President of Memorial Medical Center Auxiliary, Past President of Port Lavaca Women’s Bowling Association, and a homemaker. Charles was called home to be with the Lord on December 10, 2004 after a long battle with cancer. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Arthur and Jessie Glover Hoodless and his sister, Julia. He was born in Milton, Florida on February 8, 1942. He was a descendant of John and Cacius Dycus Hoodless who owned and operated the Hoodless Shipyard. Charles was also a descendant of Owen Jesse and Julia Beasley Glover who moved to Santa Rosa County in the early 1900s. Charles was a member of the First Baptist Church, Milton, and had the honor of serving on the honor of serving on the building committee of the new sanctuary. He served Santa Rosa County for 18 years as a Building Inspector. His passion was restoring old gas pumps, barber’s chairs and signs. He will be sorely missed by all who had the great fortune to know him. Charles is survived by his soul mate and best friend, Aleta Brown Hoodless; by his daughter, Julia and son-in-law, Fritz Hoeschler; son Ronnie and daughter-in-law, Sally Arnold, and step grandson, Sean Compton. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Dorothy Harvey, Point Comfort, Texas; brothers, John and Peggy Hoodless, Gary and Joyce Hoodless, Ken and Susan Hoodless, all of Milton, Deborah and Bob McGahey, Round Rock Texas, Willis and Mary Brown, Indianola, Texas, Joel and Lupe Brown, Blessing, Texas, James and Loretta Brown, Port Lavaca, Texas; aunts, Carrie Bell Grice, Maggie Larsen, Exie Griffith, Verla Edwards, Pauline Glover and Nellie Brumley; and a special cousin, Leo and Peggy Griffith.
