A 21-year-old Palacios man Monday was listed in critical condition in John Sealy Hospital in Galveston where he was admitted for treatment of burns suffered in a one-vehicle accident last Monday. The victim was identified as Kenneth Wayne Hickl of Palacios. Investigating officers say that Hickl was driving on State Highway 71 south of Midfield when the accident occurred. Apparently Hickl fell asleep and the 1974 pickup, which had been purchased only two days earlier, hit the concrete bridge abutment on Wallace Creek Bridge. The truck flipped over on the bridge and caught fire. The accident occurred at approximately 3 a. m. In spite of his severe burns, Hickl was able to get out of the vehicle and walked nearly a mile to a residence where emergency help was summoned. Members of the Blessing Volunteer Fire Department extinguished the flames. Hickl was rushed by ambulance to Matagorda General Hospital and, after treatment there, was transferred to Sealy. Daily Tribune, April 1, 1974 Hickl Youth Succumbs To Injuries 16 Days After Accident Services will be held April 19 at 10 a. m. for 21 year old Kenneth Wayne Hickl of Palacios who was severely burned in an auto accident on April 1. The Palacios youth passed away April 16 at the John Sealy Hospital in Galveston. According to the investigating highway patrolman Hickl was traveling south of Midfield on State Highway 71 in a 74 pickup truck when he apparently fell asleep at the wheel. The vehicle hit the concrete bridge abutment on Wallace Creek Bridge and flipped over the bridge catching on fire. In spite of his severe burns, Hickl was able to get out of the vehicle and walk nearly a mile to a residence where emergency help was summoned. He was rushed by ambulance to Matagorda General Hospital and after receiving treatment there was transferred to John Sealy in Galveston. A need for blood for the Palacios youth was issued and the response was overwhelming. Blood donors lined up volunteering their services on two separate Saturdays with residents of the Palacios area and the Bay City area driving to the blood center. A group of San Marcos college students chartered a bus and traveled the many miles to Bay City to donate their blood for the injured fellow student. Hopes were high that the youth would be able to overcome his injuries. Services for Kenneth Hickl will be held April 19 at 10 a. m. at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Palacios with Father Armand Florizoone officiating. Interment will be at St. Peter's Cemetery in Blessing with pallbearers being: Ronnie, Donnie, David, Anthony, Jessie, Jr., and Paul Hickl.
