Susan Martha Runyon, was born in Bucklin, Mo., April 9, 1869, and died at the home of John F. Perry, in San Antonio, Oct. 13, 1933. She was married to J. H. Houghton at Bucklin, Mo., Dec. 20, 1894, who survives her. No children blessed this union, but their love and devotion for each other made their life one of true companionship. In 1906 they came to Palacios, which has been their home ever since. Mrs. Houghton was a devout Christian woman all her life, having united with the Methodist Church when quite young. She enjoyed all church services and was a regular attendant whenever her health permitted. She was never real well and had been an invalid for many years, yet she was ever cheerful and eager to do all or more than her strength permitted. She was a member of a family of ten children and only one survives her, a sister, Mrs. H. C. Hunt, who has been here the past year to assist and care for her. Less than a month ago Mr. and Mrs. Houghton and Mrs. Hunt went to San Antonio and had a very pleasant visit with their nephews, John, Jim and Guy Perry. They were getting ready to return home when Mrs. Houghton contracted a cold, which developed into pneumonia on last Wednesday. Her frail little body soon gave up the struggle and her spirit took flight to that land where God’s children are “Gathering Home.” The remains were brought to Palacios Saturday, accompanied by Mrs. Hunt, and on Sunday afternoon funeral services were held at the Methodist Church. Songs dear to the heart of the deceased and her family were beautifully rendered and Rev. R. Paine, pastor, spoke words of comfort to the bereaved relatives and friends. Interment was made in the Palacios Cemetery, Jesse and John Richards, R. C. Huddleston, J. P. McDonald, Geo. W. Curtis and J. E. Robinson were pall bearers, and the burial service was under the direction of the Duffy and Rittenhouse Undertaking Company.
