Elizabeth Ann Gaas of Prairie Hill, Texas, passed away at her home on August 12, 2024. She was born on January 27, 1954, in Bay City, Texas. The family will have a private burial in Prairie Hill, Texas, followed by a Celebration of her life at 1p.m., Saturday, August 17, 2024, at Grace Gardens Funeral Home in Woodway, with a time of reception after the service. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Murphy Whiddon; her parents, Betty and Frank Gaas; and a brother, Paul Alan Gaas. She leaves behind her beloved family and a host of friends to celebrate her sharp wit, prodigious intellect, and quirky collections that showcased her interest in anything and everything on the planet. Elizabeth was a voracious reader from a young age. She was a National Merit Finalist at Bay City High School and went on to graduate from the University of Texas at Arlington with a Bachelor of Science and a Masters in Psychology. While working toward her Ph.D., Liz was an Associate Professor of Psychology at UT Arlington. She also attended Southwestern Medical School. Earlier in life Liz held a wide variety of jobs and took pride in being self-reliant and fiercely independent. A natural scholar, Liz was adept at arguing for the sake of seeking truth, using knowledge from her background and medical and government work. While her background was theoretical, her applied knowledge was astonishing in understanding human nature. Elizabeth had a wide circle of friends and often traveled the continental U.S. in a sketchy vehicle equipped with enough food and survival gear to handle any coming zombie apocalypse. After marriage to Michael, Liz enjoyed finding unique ‘boutique’ motels in small Texas towns off the beaten path, attending strange festivals celebrating minor events, and seeking out weird monuments commemorating local lore. She owned an antique store in Groesbeck, Texas, with an emphasis on vintage jewelry and gemstones. Elizabeth and Michael loved small town living and enjoyed their close-knit community in Prairie Hill. No Gaas Christmas Day was complete without Elizabeth blowing in the front door like a holiday typhoon with wrapped boxes and the history behind every gift. She was a combination of practical and fanciful, one of a kind. She leaves behind three brothers to grieve her passing, Richard (Lyn), Patrick (Carol), and Christopher (Annette); as well as a host of nieces and nephews that were fascinated by their vibrant Auntie Liz; and extended family. As a woman who valued her family and friends above all else, Elizabeth will be remembered and missed deeply by those who knew her. Donations can be made in Elizabeth’s honor to Prairie Hill Baptist Church, 5152 FM 339, Prairie Hill, Texas 76678.

Anthony James Garcia Sr., 43, of Bay City passed away from this life on April 2, 2023. He was born July 17th, 1979, in Bay City, Texas to Rose T. Garcia and the late Ezequiel D. Garcia Jr. Anthony was a person who lived a quiet life; in a sense, he stayed to himself, but maintained a love for his family and overall kindness to people that he made contact with. He was involved in many things throughout his life, a love for cars, especially showing off those fancy rims, his caps, his shoes, and his "bling " as he called it. His smile and laugh, that made him irresistible to be around with. After graduating from high school, he worked many jobs and did them all well. As he grew to a young man, he wanted to be like his father, he learned to drive the big rigs (18 wheelers) with such great accuracy, he found out that he had the "gift " to drive, during his down time he loved to play those (loud) games and watch wrestling in his room, this was his sanctuary (a place of peace for him.) As time passed life brought challenges but he overcame them. His most important mission was to take care of his mother and do the best for his children. There is so much more to be said but his memory will remain, after all this is all, we have left. He was preceded in death by his father Ezequiel D. Garcia Jr. Survivors include his mother, Rose T. Garcia, daughter Gabrielle Renay Garcia; son Anthony James Garcia Jr.; son Ezequiel James Garcia; son Khyson M. Guevara; brother Ezequiel T. Augustina “Tina” Garcia, 81, of Palacios passed away peacefully on February 27, 2023. She was born December 3, 1941 in Victoria County, Texas to the late Eduardo McDonald and Maria Sostenas Costante McDonald. Tina was an only child, raised by her elderly grandfather, William McDonald, on the Lowry Ranch in Victoria. Her mother had died when Tina was two and her father was busy working on the ranch. Her grandfather home-schooled her until she was about 13 when she went to work in a Victoria restaurant where she learned to cook, and her love for cooking began. Many loved her cooking as she always had the stove going and would cook – not just a snack – but a full meal for anyone who stopped by the house. She had no care for their age, race or status; she cooked for them all. Her children’s friends treated her house as the gathering place where they could get food..., some caring and loving as well. Her five children rejoiced in a special birthday treat of their favorite dish, custom-made exactly the way they wanted it. She became a seafood culinary expert too when her husband had a Shrimping business here in Palacios. Her tamales attained a city-wide legendary status, with folks placing orders and coming by at all times of the day. She was a natural care-giver, taking in another three children as well as her own. She assumed nursing duties for a teen-age girl immobilized in a car accident and coaxed her back to a walking state in about four years. Besides nourishing the people immediately around her, she took the role of recreation facilitator at both the Bay City and Palacios Friends of Elder Citizens groups. Towards the end of her life, after a paralyzing stroke put her in a nursing home at a relatively young age, she helped many of her fellow residents transition from this life to the next, comforting the families as their special person went through the hospice process. Perhaps it was the early death of her mother and her reliance on her grandfather that made her sensitive to, and appreciative of, death and the elderly. She favored herself, when possible, with music and dancing. She spent many hours over a poker table and listening to a Bingo caller boom out the numbers. Her life was characterized by grit and determination, and self-resilience. She made the best of whatever Life would throw her way, no matter what it was. “We can do it,” she would say. And then she would. Survivors include daughters Rosemary Perez (Danny) and Donna Marie Brune (Kenny) and sons Albert Pena, Jr., Richard Pena and Joe Pena (Melissa); grandchildren Tabitha Perez, Seth Perez (Monica), Albert Pena III, Tina Pena, Joie Love Pena and Joe Pena, II, Lance Brune, Lauren Gerald (Dane), and great-grandchildren Seth Perez, Jr., Trinity Perez, Phoebe Perez and Zachary Perez, Fayth Pena, Albert Pena IV, Angelina Pena, Nathan Pena, Jadon Williams, Janessa Johnson and Skyler Gerald. Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM Friday, March 3, 2023 at the Palacios Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 2:00 PM with Rev. Eric Young officiating. Interment will follow at Hawley Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Seth Perez, Albert Pena, Jr., Albert Pena, III, Joe Pena II, Skyler Gerald, Henry Garcia. Honorary pallbearer is Lance Brune.
