Bay City Mexican Shot To Death Near Van
Vleck This A. M. Concepcion Gonzales, Mexican, age 49, was mortally wounded this morning about 11:30 just off the highway north of Van Vleck. The assailant thought to be a white man, waited along the road for Gonzales who was hauling wood and when he approached, leveled down with a shot gun and fired at Gonzales' head. From the looks of Gonzales' hands he evidently realized that the man was going to kill him, as he threw his hands to his head. His hands were badly torn with the shot gun pellets, and several entered his head and back of his neck from the right side, killing him instantly. With him was a Mexican boy, about 7 years old, who was hit by some of the stray shot. His wounds back of his head and neck were not serious. Officers had not made an arrest early this afternoon. Gonzales is survived by his wife and four children. He was a familiar figure in Bay City, having been here practically all of his life. He drove a wagon and hauled wood during the winter.

Ret. MSGT Steven Alan Goodale was born on August 13, 1948 in Austin, Texas to Emmitt and June Goodale. He spent his formative years in Houston, Texas where he attended Madison High School. There he played football and was voted Mr. School Spirit. He joined the Air Force on October 16, 1968. While serving his country for 20 years and 1 month, he was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Training Ribbon, Small Arms Marksmanship Ribbon, NCO Professional Military Education Graduate Ribbon, Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon with four oak leaf cluster, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Overseas Long Tour Ribbon with one oak leaf cluster, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, and Air Force Good Conduct Medal with a silver oak leaf cluster. Steve served many years abroad, both in Turkey (during the Vietnam War) and in England. While stationed at Dyess Air Force Base near Abilene, Texas, he met his wife of 38 years, Sharon Christenson. They were married after a short courtship on December 27, 1980. When asked by his daughter why he waited so long to get married, Steve was fond of saying, "Because I hadn't met your mother yet!" They absolutely had that "once in a lifetime" love. Together they had four children: Stephenei, Sean, Steven, and Scott. They were also blessed with nine grandchildren, plus one on the way. Steve will be remembered by all for his ability to make people feel special. He was known to order the occasional "as seen on TV" gadget (or hundreds!), and he loved to play the lotto. Steve was always the first person to call and sing "Happy Birthday" or pick up something special for his grandkids, no matter the occasion. He loved his coffee and always had a stash of candy somewhere close by. Steve prided himself in how well he kept his yard and followed the law to the letter. In fact, he was only involved in one auto accident his entire life, but wasn't even at the scene when it happened (you'll have to ask Steven Anthony about that one when you get to the Pearly Gates)! He was the "go-to" guy for his friends or family when they needed a hand. Steve was preceded in death by his father and mother, Emmitt and June Goodale, as well as his son, Steven Anthony Goodale. He is survived by his children Stephenei Goodale (husband Clint) of Victoria, Texas; Sean Goodale (wife Claire) of San Antonio, Texas; Scott Goodale (wife Nicole) of Placedo, Texas; his grandchildren Stormie, Lincoln, Gabrielle, Sicily, Dominic, Caleb, Henderson, Addison, Charlotte, and a special surprise grandchild who is yet to be named; brother Rodney Goodale and sister Charlotte Goodale (husband Bob), both of Comfort, Texas, and brother Charles Goodale (wife Vicky) of Granbury, Texas. He also leaves behind an uncle, Ducky Musselwhite, three special nieces that gave him the desire to become a father, Dawn, Deveri, Detri, several other nieces and nephews , cousins, and numerous friends that he considered family. All in all, Steve's legacy is one of a life well lived by a man well loved. We will all miss him deeply until we meet his beautiful soul again. Viewing will take place on Saturday, February 16 at 10:00 AM at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM the same day at Matagorda Episcopal Church, followed by a graveside service with military honors at Matagorda Cemetery.

It is with unbelievable sadness that we announce the death of Steven Anthony Goodale, who passed from this world on Friday, May 4, 2018 at the age of 35 years in Matagorda, Texas. Steven was born on March 17, 1983 at Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene, Texas. In 2002, he graduated from Harper High School in Harper, Texas, where he played football and spent many hours working with his hero – his grandfather, Monroe Jerome Lang - who preceded him in death. After high school, Steven went on to work in oil refineries in the Houston area and up the eastern coast of the United States. In 2008, he returned to Texas to work for the family business in Brenham. During his time there, Steven discovered his love for rodeo sound production, into which he poured his heart and soul. At the time of his passing, he was working a job he enjoyed very much, because it allowed him to be outdoors and near the water on a daily basis. Steven was known for his kind heart, constant grin, joyful laugh, and easygoing personality. Because of these qualities, he never met a person who stayed a stranger for long. He would literally give you his last dollar, pick up the tab, or extend a hand any way he could. Steven was also known for his own brand of jokes, which his family playfully called "pulling a Stevie." He was an avid fisherman who spent a great deal of his free time catching anything from sharks to bass. Steven did all these things while raising his two youngest children on his own. His children ruled his heart and are the reason he woke each day. Steven is survived by his three children, Gabrielle, Caleb, and Addison; his parents, Steve and Sharon; sister, Stephenei and her husband, Clint; brother, Sean and his wife, Claire; brother, Scott and his wife, Nicole; grandmother, Billie; grandfather, Victor; nieces and nephews, Sicilly, Dominic, Henderson, and Charlotte; the mother of his children, Jody; and his partner, Kerri. Steven leaves behind several aunts, uncles, and cousins, and many friends. The family wishes to invite family members and friends to a memorial service for Steven at Christ Episcopal Church in Matagorda on Friday, May 11 at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations to an online memorial fund created to help with the cost of raising Steven’s children are deeply appreciated.
