Army Corps of Engineers as a lock operator. He retired from the Corps on September 3, 1986. After his retirement Jim kept busy with his “ranch,” taking care of his cattle and garden. The dead body of Forest Fortenberry, a prominent farmer of near Blessing, was found early yesterday morning near Tide Haven. The body was terribly mangled, parts of which were scattered along the tracks. Mr. Fortenberry had been to Blessing on horseback and left the latter place about 8 o’clock to return to his home near Tide Haven. The horse arrived at home without the bridle about 11 o’clock at night. Mrs. Fortenberry, fearing some accident had befallen him, sent a Mexican in search of her husband, but he returned later without finding him. At daylight she sent another who found the body near the crossing. It is supposed a passing train struck him, causing his death. Several dollars in silver, which he had in his pockets were scattered along the track. Mr. Fortenberry was a prominent citizen of the Midfield section and was well and favorably known here. He leaves a wife and three children and also three brothers, residing at Midfield, to-wit: Jim, a deputy under Sheriff Carr, Idle and Henry, together with a large number of friends and acquaintances in that and other sections of the country.
