Ben Ehlers

Mr. Ben Ehlers passed to his eternal rest on Friday, March 27th, almost 77 years old. He had been in ill health a very short time. He became worse in the beginning of the week, and was taken to the Wharton hospital where he passed on, somewhat suddenly, to the many-mansioned home.

He was born in Austin County in 1865. As a young man he moved to Lavaca County and settled on a ranch near Gonzales. In 1897 he was married to Miss Mina Gloor. Having been successful at ranching, he purchased the Palacios Hotel from Mr. C. W. Hess in the fall of 1919. He and his wife and two children moved here at that time. Mr. and Mrs. Ehlers managed the Palacios Hotel for more than two years, when they purchased the Tatum home and moved into it. Mr. Ehlers sold the hotel to a company from Illinois. In the management of the hotel Mr. and Mrs. Ehlers made many friends through their kindness and courtesy.

Mr. Ehlers was an alderman from 1922 to 1926, becoming Mayor of the city in the latter year. He held this office for two terms, 1926 to 1930. His administration was distinguished for honesty and efficiency. He was very attentive to the duties of his office both as alderman and mayor. He gave of his best to the city, and will be remembered by his friends for his business sense, his economy, and his sterling honesty. In private life he was of an energetic nature and liked to be busy. He was very skillful in the use of tools as a carpenter, machinist, etc., and found much of his happiness in his skill. In his later years he was fond of gardening, and the taste of both Mr. and Mrs. Ehlers was seen in the surroundings of their home.

Mr. Ehlers was a sincere Christian. He was loyal to his God and his Church, and Mr. and Mrs. Ehlers have been faithful members of the Lutheran Church since they moved here. He is survived by his wife and two children, Mrs. Erv Boyd of Wharton, and Mr. Carl Ehlers, of Palacios and two grandchildren. Two brothers and a sister, and other relatives, also remain to mourn his going. The funeral service was held on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 from the Palacios Funeral Home. Rev. W. B. Gummelt, pastor of the Lutheran Church, had charge of the service, assisted by Rev. George F. Gillespie. There was a large and representative attendance at the funeral from this town and from other districts.

Pallbearers were J. L. Deutsch, W. C. Gray, O. E. Sailor, G. A. Salsbury, R. J Sisson, and A. G. Skinner.—George F. Gillespie.

Dr. Kay Bartholomew Eldredge

Dr. Kay Bartholomew Eldredge, 65 of Palacios passed away at home on February 9, 2016, after a long battle with cancer.

She is survived by her husband Dan Eldredge of Palacios, TX, her son Robert Sussman of Houston, TX, and her two sisters Ira Jane Bartholomew Romero of Lafayette, LA, and Lynn Bartholomew of Houston, TX.

Kay was a native Houstonian, who loved living in Texas. In recent years, she split her time between Houston where she worked and her farm in Palacios. Developing and caring for the farm together with her husband Dan was her real passion. On most days at the farm, you would find Kay tending her fruit trees and vegetable garden until darkness forced her into the house. The farm became home for stray dogs and cats, chickens, horses and Texas Longhorns. Kay simply loved being on the farm with Dan and living in Palacios.

Dr. Bartholomew Eldredge worked in the field of health education and health promotion since her graduation from Austin College in 1974. She received her MPH degree from the UT Health School of Public Health and her EdD degree in educational psychology from the University of Houston. She began her public health work as a health educator in the Denison-Sherman-Grayson health department and later at the Texas Children’s Hospital. In 1991 she began her academic career as Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine and in 1995 joined the faculty at the University Of Texas School Of Public Health. Dr. Bartholomew Eldredge was a distinguished teaching professor in the Department of Health Promotion and Behavioral Sciences at the School of Public Health. She was instrumental in shaping academic policy while serving as associate dean for academic affairs from 2009- 2015. Since first entering the field of health education and health promotion, she touched the lives of many. She was inherently dedicated to her profession, and she received awards for teaching excellence, including the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health Teaching Excellence Award, the UT Health President’s Scholar for Teaching, and The University of Texas System Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award. She was a member of The University of Texas Kenneth I. Shine M.D. Academy of Health Sciences Education and held a special chair (visiting) at the University of Maastricht, the Netherlands. In the classroom, she pioneered teaching techniques that enhance critical thinking among masters and doctoral students, and she served as a mentor for many School of Public Health faculty members. As associate dean for academic affairs, her tireless efforts helped to ensure excellence in learning for public health students across Texas. Kay will be remembered for her friendship and her compassion. She was selfless in giving of her time and support to helping others. She was a loving mother, a devoted partner, and genuine friend. Her spirit will live on in whom all she has touched: students, colleagues, friends, and family. She will be deeply missed by all.
