VAN VLECK - Consuelo Gonzales Canales, 68, of Van Vleck, died Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002.

She was born Oct. 17, 1933, in Woodsboro, to the late Cruz and Delfina Martinez Gonzales. She was a custodian and a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Bay City.

Survivors: husband, Fred Canales Sr.; daughters, Frances Perez of Sweeny, Rose Cortez of Lake Jackson and Suzanne Tijerina of Van Vleck; sons, Fred Canales Jr. and Ernest Canales, both of Van Vleck, and Ruben Canales of Freeport; sisters, Rita Reyes of LaSalle, Maria Briones of Texas City and Ramona Garcia of Enid, Okla.; brothers, Pete Gonzales of Dickinson, Julio Gonzales and Domingo Gonzales, both of San Leon; 20 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: son, Jimmy Canales; and parents.

A rosary will be recited 7:30 p.m. tonight at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home chapel.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, the Rev. Gerard Cernock officiating. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Taylor Bros. Funeral Home, Bay City, 979-245-4613.

Funeral services for Jimmy Canales, 33, of Van Vleck will be held 10 AM Saturday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with the Reverend Edward Boren officiating. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck.  Rosary will be said 7 pm today at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home in Bay City.

Mr. Canales was born Jan. 21, 1959 in Bay City to Consuelo Gonzales and Fred M. Canales Sr. and he died Dec. 2, 1992 in Freeport.

Survivors include his wife, Connie Canales of Freeport; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred M. Canales Sr. of Van Vleck; four daughters, Cassandra and Christina Canales, both of Victoria, Jessie Lopez of Bay City and Ashley Erevia of Sweeny; three sons, Jimmy Canales Jr. and Lestine Canales, both of Van Vleck and Jimmy Arzola of Bay City; three sisters, Frances Canales, Rose Cortez and Suzanne Tijerina, all of Van Vleck; three brothers, Fred Canales Jr. and Ernest Canales, both of Van Vleck and Ruben Canales of Brazoria; his maternal grandmother, Delfina Gonzales; seven nieces and three nephews.

BAY CITY [Matagorda County, TX] -- Mary Gloria Sanchez Canales, 58, of Bay City, died Sunday, May 5, 2002.

She was born Feb. 8, 1944, in Falfurrias, to Ramona Rodriguez Sanchez of Bay City and the late Domingo Sanchez Sr. She was a homemaker and member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Bay City.

Survivors: daughter, Elda Banuelos of Tulsa, Okla.; sons, Manuel Anthony Villarreal III of Tulsa, Okla. and Raul Valencia Jr. of Bay City; sisters, Norma Diana Sanchez and Kelly Hernandez, both of Bay City and Edna Sanchez of Victoria; brothers, Freddie Sanchez, Salvador Sanchez and Sonny Sanchez, all of Bay City; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and mother.

Preceded in death by: daughter, Esmeralda Villarreal; brother, Domingo Sanchez Jr.; one grandchild; and father.

A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. tonight at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home chapel.

Amancio "Pete" Cano


Amancio “Pete” Cano, 69, of Markham died Oct. 24, 2002 at Methodist Hospital in Houston. He was born April 8, 1933 in Mercedes, Texas to the late Alfonso and Gregoria Cano. Mr. Cano was a resident of Markham since 1963, a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. He owned and operated Pete’s Paint and Body Shop in Markham.

Survivors include: wife, Guadalupe Alaniz Cano of Markham; children, Daniel Cano of Sealy, Tina LeFevre and husband Jack of Spring, Barbara Medina and husband Beto of Liberty, Margaret Adsit and husband Dwight of Spring, Bill Cano and wife Anna of Baytown and Cathy Cano of Portland, Oregon; brothers, Severo and Jose Cano, Amelia Villanuera, Reyes C. Pena and Alfonso Cano Jr. all of Mercedes; 14 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Mike Cano and sister Lupe Mora.

A rosary service was held at 8 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home, and the funeral mass will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with the Rev. Gerard Cernock officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Van Vleck.

Pallbearers will be Joe Guajardo, William Parks, Dwight Varna, Jerry Fettinger, Albert Garcia and Pete Sardelich. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandsons and Tino Torres.

Guadalupe Alaniz Cano
November 16, 1932 - July 30, 2023

Guadalupe Alaniz Cano was born November 16, 1932 in Markham, Texas to Augustin and Guadalupe Gonzales Alaniz and passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 30, 2023.

Lupe was preceded in death by her son Michael Cano, grandson Christopher Rodriguez, husband Pete Cano, brothers Joe Alaniz, Matt Alaniz, Henry Alaniz, Augustin Alaniz, Jr. and Louis Alaniz and sisters Julia Garcia, Concepcion Alaniz and Eliza Rodriguez.

She is survived by her children Daniel (Mandy) of Sealy, TX, Tina (Jack) of Huntsville, TX, Bobbie (Winchester) of Beaumont, TX, Margaret (Dwight) of Cypress, TX, Billy (Anna) of Baytown, TX, and Catherine of Portland, OR; brother Teofilo Alaniz of Conroe, TX, sister Lucy Parr of Silsbee, TX and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Lupe was born in Markham, TX and attended school in Blessing and Tidehaven High School.  She married Pete Cano in 1952 and began her life as a devoted wife and loving mother.  She remained very active in the Catholic Church, being involved with the Altar Society at St. Robert’s Church in Markham, a Prison Ministry group in Bay City and the Annual Bazaar at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Bay City.  Her faith never wavered, and she remained very devoted to Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico.

All of her children, Danny, Tina, Bobbie, Margaret, Billy and Cathy are confident that she is now resting peacefully, cheerfully and joyfully with her choir of angels in Heaven, and so we take great solace in that.

Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM Friday, August 4, 2023 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Bay City.  A rosary will be recited at 9:30 AM followed by Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM.  Interment will take place at Roselawn Memorial Park.  Pallbearers will be Jack LeFevre, Dwight Adsit, Daniel Cano, Jr., Michael Vega, Nathaniel Ford and Glenn Hayes.  William Parks will serve as honorary pallbearer.

Barbara Guadalupe Cano

September 28, 1960 - August 17, 2024

Barbara Guadalupe Cano was born on September 28th, 1960 and gained her wings on August 17th 2024 at the age of 63.

She was preceded in death by- her parents Amancio “Pete’” and Lupe Cano, Brother Michael Cano, Son Christopher Rodriguez, and husband Humberto “Beto”.

Survivors include her children Michael (Cynthia) of Seguin, Felipe (Marvelia) of Bay City; Joey of Houston, Cissi of Piedras Negras, Tom (Theresa) of New Jersey and Alfredo Garcia of Victoria; her siblings Danny (Mandy) of Sealy, Tina (Jack) of Huntsville, Margaret (Dwight) of Cypress, Billy (Anna) of Baytown and Cathy of Portland, Oregon as well as 21 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces, and nephews.

From the day she was born she knew only to work hard and love her family with all she had. She loved gospel music, posting on Facebook, being there for anyone that she came into contact with, and she could throw down in the kitchen!!!  She was a beautiful soul and will continue to watch over all of us along with the rest of our loved ones in heaven.

A rosary will be recited at 1:30 PM Friday, August 23, 2024 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.  Funeral Mass will be at 2:00 PM with Rev. Gabriel Espinosa officiating.

Funeral services for Arroaro Guzman Cano, 46, will be at 10 am Monday, Oct. 18, 1999, at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home Chapel.

She died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999, in Bay City.  She was born Feb. 8, 1953 in Bay City to Anselmo and Ofelia Bustos Guzman.

She is survived by: her parents, daughters, Elisia Mendoza, Monica Cano, and Juanita Murillo; sisters, Gloria Montero, Delia Soto, and Linda Moreno; brothers, Johnny Guzman and Richard Guzman; and six grandchildren, all of Bay City.

Funeral services for Sidney Louis Carr, 29, will be held at 6 p.m. Friday at Holy Cross Catholic Church with the Rev. Charles Sonnier officiating.  Graveside services will be held at Roselawn Memorial Park, Van Vleck.  A rosary will be held at 8 pm today at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home chapel.

 

Mr. Carr was the youngest son of Lilly Carr and the Late Lee Carr. He died August 26, 1987, from injuries received in an automobile accident.

 

He graduated from Bay City High School in 1976. 

 

Survivors include two children, Phillip Louis and Ashley Anne Carr of Bay City; his mother, Lilly Richers Carr of Bay City; his grandmother, Julia Richers of Bay City; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Joe and Patsy Lawhon, Kirk and Julie Carr all of Bay City, and Mike and Eleene Carr of Bryan; four nephews, Matt and Scott Lawhon, Nathan Kemp and Ryan Carr; three nieces, Laura Carr and Becky and Beth Bridges; an aunt Phyllis Carr; and a cousin Vicky Carr Rohan.

 

Pallbearers include Roy Dean Evans, Peter Allen Green, Dee Clements, William Frazier, Sherwood Richers and Gary Marshall.  Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home, Bay City.

Lucille Carroll

Lucille Carroll, 93, of Brandon, Mississippi, died December 25, 2004 at the Brandon Court Nursing Center in Brandon, Mississippi.

She was born December 6, 1911 in Merrysville,Texas.

She was a member of the First Christian Church, resident of Brandon for the past seven years and a former longtime resident of Bay City.

Survivors include: daughter-in-law, Karen Carroll of Brandon, Mississippi, two grandchildren, Greg Carroll of Brandon, Mississippi and Glen Carroll of Terry, Mississippi; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Felix C. Carroll, and her son Charles Carroll.

A graveside funeral service was held 10 a.m. Friday, December 31, 2004 at Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Van Vleck, with the Rev. Brenda Wilson officiating.

WADSWORTH - Dakota Wayne Cartwright, infant son of Brandon W. Cartwright and Tiffany Dawn Bruening of Wadsworth, died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002.

Survivors: parents; grandparents, Wayne and Donna Bruening of Bay City, and Howard and Shari Cartwright of Alvin; great-grandparents, Frances R. Bruening and Bobbie Hoffman, both of Bay City, Guy and Mary Snyder of Van Vleck, Howard and Patsy Cartwright of Elkhart, and Lila Smith of Matagorda.

Preceded in death by: great-grandfather, Wesley August Bruening.

Funeral services for Mrs. Blanche Myrtle Cartwright, 85, of Wadsworth will be held 10 1m Tuesday, at the Bay City Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. C. J. Molmen of the First Baptist Church in Matagorda officiating.  Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park, Van Vleck. 

Mrs. Cartwright died May 19, 1984, in Marrero, La. She is preceded in death by her husband, Savage Cartwright in 1980.

Survivors include; sons, Homer W. Cartwright of Bay City, M. M. Cartwright of Blessing, Robbie J. Cartwright of Clear Lake, Charles Cartwright of Cedar Park, Howard E. Cartwright of Wadsworth and Travis L. Cartwright of Bay City; daughters, Mary C. Toups of Marrero, La., and Juanita Bell of Bastrop; sisters, Florence Foster of California; brother-in-law, M. T. Cartwright of Austin; 21 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.

Savage Cartwright

Funeral services for Savage Cartwright, 79, of Wadsworth, were held in Baptist Temple Church Oct. 23 with Rev. Elli Epps of Yoakum officiating. Interment was in Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck.

Mr. Cartwright died Oct. 21 in Matagorda General Hospital.  He was a lifetime resident of Matagorda County and served as Deputy Sheriff of Matagorda County for 28 years.  He was also a rancher and served in the Navy during WWI.

He is survived by his wife, Blanche of Wadsworth; sons, Travis L. and Howard E. of Wadsworth, Homer W. of Bay City, M.M. “Mac” of Blessing, Robbie J. of Cedar Lake, Charles of Cedar Park; daughters, Mrs. Mary C. Toups of Marrero, La., Mrs. Juanita Bell of Cedar Creek; brother, Madison P. Cartwright of Alvin; 21 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Maggie Belle (Margaret) Sutton Chambless, 75, of Van Vleck will be held 3 pm Thursday at the Church of Nazarene with the Rev. R. H. Zumalt officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck.

Mrs. Chambless was born Dec. 10, 1912, in McGregor, Texas to W. W. and Delia Long Sutton and died July 12, 1988, at Matagorda General Hospital, Bay City.

She was the owner of Her Upholstery Shop.  She was a lifetime of the Church of the Nazarene where she was a Sunday school teacher, member of the church board and held other offices.

Survivors include her husband, Albert A. Chambless of Van Vleck; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bertram A. and Ann Chambless of Massachusetts and recently of Houston, and Travis and Audrey Chambless of Bay City; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers include Tim Riha, Dale Skinner, Bennie Owen, Victor Hadash, Truett Farris and Keefer Davis.

Ricardo Edward Charles, Jr., 33 of Bay City passed away on Friday, September 7, 2007.

He was born January 23, 1974 in Bay City to Norma Diana Sanchez and the late Ricardo Charles.

He was preceded in death by: his father, Ricardo Charles, Sr.; grandparents, Domingo Sanchez, Annie Charles, and Louis Charles, Jr.

Ritchie is survived by: his mother, Norma Sanchez; step-mother, Mary Charles; three daughters, Amanda Charles, Amber Charles and Ashlyn Gomez; step-daughter, Gaby Gomez; two sons, Jacob Gomez, and Mark Gomez; seven brothers, Robert Montalvo, Ruben Montalvo, Ray Montalvo, Johnny Charles, Gilbert Charles, Ernesto Rodriguez, Jr., and Joshua Charles; two sisters, Elizabeth Nelson and Jessica Charles; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, all from the Charles and Sanchez families.

Viewing will be held from 3 until 9 p.m. Wednesday, September 12, 2007 at Green Brothers Mortuary.

Funeral mass will be at 2 p.m. at Turning Point Church with the Pastor Hill Winfrey officiating.

James H. Cheatham

James H. Cheatham, 84, of Bay City passed away Feb. 1, 1997 in Matagorda General Hospital.

He was born Sept. 3, 1912 in Henderson, Tenn. To James and Norma Cheatham.  A member of the First Christian Church, a resident of Bay City since 1941, a life time member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles #3232 in Bay City, the Odd Fellows #81 of Bay City for 40 plus years.  Organizer of the “Medicare Band” which perform regular at the local nursing homes.  He was a retired mail carrier for the U. S. Postal Service with 28 years of service.

He is survived by two sons and daughter in laws William L. and Charlotte Cheatham and John H. and Evelyn Cheatham both of League City; one step daughter Wanda Waters of Texas City; four step sons, Gerald Kennedy of Houston, Bo Kennedy of Bay City, Steven Kennedy of Victoria and David Kennedy of Independence, Mo.; one granddaughter Donna Marie Cheatham of League City and numerous step grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Elizabeth “Pat” Cheatham Feb. 10, 1964 and Nellie Mae Kennedy Cheatham Sept. 10, 1994.

Funeral services will be 11 am Tuesday, Feb. 4, 1997 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Chapel with Rev. Bill Stephens officiating.  Interment will be at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck.  Pallbearers will be member of The Medicare Band.

Mary Elizabeth “Pat” Cheatham

Funeral services for Mary Elizabeth “Pat” Cheatham were held Feb. 12 at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Frank Seaman officiating. Burial was in Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck. 

Mrs. Cheatham, 68, died Feb. 10 in Matagorda General Hospital.  She was born Oct. 25, 1915 in Sharon, Tenn. to Elisha Tillman and Nancy Catherine Hatcher.

She was an active member of the Presbyterian Church, Bay City Rebekah Lodge No. 19 and a charter member of the Ladies Auxiliary F. O. E. 3232 in Bay City.

Survivors include: husband, James H. Cheatham of Bay City; sons, William L. and John Cheatham of League City, Texas; one sister, Mrs. Roy Shobe of Dresden, Tenn.; one grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.  Arrangements were made with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home.

Justice Green Chrisman
September 8, 1901 February 5, 1983

Services were held for Justice Green Chrisman, 81, of Bay City, 10 a.m. today (Monday) at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home Chapel.

Officiating at the services was the Rev. Max Phipps and Stanton Stanley.

Chrisman died February 5, 1983 at Matagorda General Hospital.

Survivors include wife, Pansey Gilbert Chrisman of Bay City; sons, Earl J. Chrisman of Bay City, John W. Chrisman of Missouri City; brothers, Robert Chrisman of St. Helen’s, Ky., Frank Chrisman of Bateyville, Ky.

Chrisman, a member of the First Assembly of God Church of Bay City, was a resident of Bay City since 1942.  He was a retired machinist with Phillips Pet. Co. and a member of Masonic Lodge 865 A. F. and A. M.

Burial followed funeral services at Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers include Marvin Schneider, Bernie Schneider, Dennis Schneider, Floyd Hammons, D. Nealy and Howard Somerville.

Pansy G. Chrisman

Funeral services for Pansy G. Chrisman, 84, of Bay City will be held 10 am Monday at the Assembly of God Church in Bay City with the Rev. Paul Van Winkle officiating.  Burial will follow at the Roselawn Memorial Park, Van Vleck.  Mrs. Chrisman was born June 7, 1906 to Lum and Cindy Shoemaker Gilbert in Lee County, Ky. and died Nov. 22, 1990, at Matagorda General Hospital.  A resident of Bay City since 1943, she was a member of the Assembly of God.

She is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law, Earl and Anna May Chrisman of Bay City and John and Ann Chrisman of Richmond; four sisters, Lillie Mae Gilbert of Boynton, Fla., June Opal Satterfield of West Carrolton, Ohio, Daisy Jude of Ashland, Ky., and Marie Nelson of Catlettsburg, Ky.; three brothers the Rev. Edward Gilbert of Ashland, Ky., Elmo Gilbert of Xenia, Ohio, and Walker Gilbert of Middletown, Ohio; two grandsons and their wives, Robert and Sue Ann Bubela of Flower Mound and John Kevin and Jeanette Chrisman of Houston; and three great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband, J. G. Chrisman in 1983.

Pallbearers are Jim Cox, Harris Gingles, Fred Jack, Durell Nealy, Marvin Rogers and Marvin Schneider.  Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home, Bay City.

Everet David Clark
 

Everet David Clark, 89, of Bay City, passed away Monday, January 31, 2005 in Houston, Texas.

He was born September 19, 1915 near Herpel, Arkansas, to Robert and Laura Brown Clark.

He was a resident of Bay City for the past 30 years and a former resident of Pasadena.

He is survived by: his sister-in-law, Ola Walker of Alabama; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by: wife, Lois Balentine Clark; parents, Robert and Laura Clark; sister, Elsie Bryant Clark; and brothers, Walter, Willard and Clyde Clark.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, February 3, 2005, at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home Chapel.

Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck. Arrangements are with Taylor Bros. Funeral Home, Bay City, Texas (979) 245-4613.

Lois M. Clark


Lois M. Clark, 86, of Bay City, died April 1, 2003 at Bay Villa Nursing Home in Bay City.

She was born Sept. 14, 1916 in Mountain View, Ark. to the late Richard E. and Ella Ballentine.

Mrs. Clark was a member of the Baptist Church, a resident of Bay City for the past 28 years and a former resident of Pasadena.

Survivors include: husband, Everett Clark of Bay City; and brother-in-law, Clyde Clark of Sargent.

Funeral services will be 11 a. m. Thursday, April 3, 2003, at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home, with the Rev. James W. Howard officiating.

Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Van Vleck.
