Terrible New Year Tragedy A deplorable tragedy ushered in the New Year for Bay City at an early hour this morning, and its coming cast a pall of sorrow over the city and brought grief and sorrow to the home of Sheriff and Mrs. Bert Carr in the accidental death of their youngest son, Sidney. From information available it seems that Sidney and some other boys were preparing to celebrate the advent of the New Year and in the articles to be used was a high power 30-30 rifle, which was loaded with soft-nosed bullets. They were in an automobile and the rifle dropped to the floor of the car. Sid reached over to pick it up when, in the usual unaccountable way, it discharged, the bullet plowing through his knee and finding lodgment in the base of the brain, entering above his eye. Death was instantaneous. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon in Cedarvale Cemetery. Sidney Carr was about 17 years of age and was reared in Bay City. He was an affable, big-hearted, jovial lad, with everybody his friend. Only recently he endeavored to join the navy, but was denied on account of his age. If ___ and expressions of sympathy and sorrow could ameliorate the grief and sooth the broken hearts of his grief-burdened parents it would be worth the while for their hundreds of friends in Bay City and surrounding country to try to aid them in their sorrow, but this cannot be done, and all that is left for the entire community is to mourn with them and share their burdens and sorrows in this dark hour of irreparable loss. To Mr. and Mrs. Carr, to the two brothers left and to the sweet little sister whose little life is saddened beyond mention, The Tribune extends, in the behalf of all the people who know the family, the profoundest sympathy that it is possible for broken hearts to express.

T. H. Castleton T. H. Castleton (Tom) Bay City’s postmaster, died at his home on South Third street this morning at a few minutes before six o’clock, following an illness of two years or more. Tom Castleton was one of the finest of men, well liked and popular with all who knew him. He and his splendid life partner have lived in Bay City for a quarter of a century during which time they have raised three fine boys. Ed, who lives in Birmingham, Ala.; Austin, general manager of the Gulf Coast Chevrolet company of this city, and Jimmie, assistant cashier of the First National Bank, all of whom and the wife and mother, survive. Mr. Castleton came to Bay City from Sealy, having been reared to manhood in Austin county. His first business association here was with the Santa Fe railroad as agent for several years. He resigned his position and quit rail roading to be elected county tax collector, holding that place for four years. He then became identified with the First National Bank and resigned that five years ago for the postmastership, which position he held up to the time of his death. He belonged to the A. F. & A. M. and Royal Arch chapters of the Bay City Masonic bodies and was a member of the lodge since its earliest days. Mr. Castleton was of a jovial nature and was everybody’s friend. The little tots knew him and loved him as well as those associated with him by the ties of business or friendly relationship. He had a smile and a cordial word for all and his sunny greetings and happy goodwill will be missed by all who knew him so well. While the death of this fine man and citizen was not unexpected, the end of such a friendly, likeable life comes as a shock to the hundreds of friends he leaves to mourn for him with the loved ones of his own fireside. The funeral will be held from the residence tomorrow afternoon at three o’clock.
