Mrs. F. B. Calhoun, relict of T. C. Calhoun, died at her home near Wadsworth yesterday morning at 4 o’clock and was buried in this city this afternoon. Decedent was 61 years of age and has been in failing health for sometime. She leaves several children.

Five Children In Family Burn to Death Sunday Five children have died in a flash fire which probably followed an explosion about 11 p. m. Sunday at 1309 Adell, near Avenue B. Another child and its mother were burned seriously and in critical condition at Matagorda General Hospital. The injured boy died early Monday morning. Dead are five children of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Campos. Five children of the family escaped death, but Albert Campos, Jr., was burned so severely that authorities had been in fear for his life. The official cause of the fire was undetermined early Monday morning, but witnesses said an explosion preceded the flash fire. The house, a frame dwelling was burned to the ground. Campos, 11 Justice of the Peace D. B. Hinton delivered an inquest verdict of accidental death by fire. Campos, an odd-job man around Bay City, was serving a minor term in county jail. Of the five children saved, all were young. Of them the most seriously burned was Albert Campos Jr. Mrs. Campos was severely burned about the face and hands. The child died about 2:25 a. m. Monday. Funeral services for the five children will be held at 4 p. m. Monday. Taylor Brothers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Monday morning the commissioners court of Matagorda County agreed to pay the burial expenses of the five children. The family has been in dire circumstances. A rosary was held for the children at 7 a. m. Monday. The five children will be buried in one sealed casket.

Roy Cannon, of Palacios, a young farmer 26 years of age, died at the home of his mother in Bay City on Saturday, August 11, and was buried in Cedarvale Cemetery in this city yesterday. He leaves a widow and a three-year-old daughter, father, mother and sister. About a month ago decedent contacted typhoid fever at his home at Palacios and growing worse, was brought to Bay City in order to have the care of his mother. He was born in Salem, Oregon, later on moved with his family to California and from that State came to Texas, settling at Palacios in 1910. In 1914 he was married to Miss Julia Alexander, of San Antonio, who with her baby girl survives him. Mr. Cannon carried a $2000.00 policy in the Bakers’ Life Association of Des Moines, Iowa.

The funeral of Mrs. Case was held from the Southern Pacific train at noon, Friday, March 23. She died at her home in Fort Worth. Mrs. Case, better known as Mrs. Cora Little, was a resident of Bay City for many years. The grave was marked with beautiful flowers from Bay City friends and others who loved her long ago. Dr. Storey held the services. Our sympathies go out to her husband and daughter, Mrs. John Hada, and three grand-children, of Port Arthur, and her son, Mr. Ed Little, in California.—A FRIEND.

Funeral services for Billy Frank Cashion, 51, of Bay City will be held 3 p. m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. David C. Duncan officiating. Burial will be in Cedarvale Cemetery, Bay City. Mr. Cashion was born Dec. 27, 1936, in Houston to David M. and Mary Elizabeth Carr Cashion and died Aug. 2, 1988, at Matagorda General Hospital, Bay City. He devoted most of his adult life working with and helping homeless and delinquent children. He served two years in the U. S. Marine Corps and then attended college majoring in sociology and psychology. He worked as a counselor and director of Boys’ Homes and later opened his own foster home for children in San Antonio and Brackettville, Texas. Mr. Cashion was an area director of the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation and the National Cancer Society in Texas for several years and in Kauai, Hawaii, for four years. Later he was the director of a youth rehabilitation center and home in Kauai. The last few working months of his life were spent in Guatemala helping the “street children” in Antigua, Guatemala. He had planned to return and make a home for those children. He was a member of the Presbyterian church and was active in civic organizations. Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Elizabeth and Virgil Fetters of Bay City; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Jimmy D. and Connie Cashion of White Swan, Wash., Tommy and Kitty Cashion of Woodbury, Ga., and J. L. and Sandra Cashion of Bay City; two stepsisters, Marsha Winzeller and Jean Fetters of Houston; and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers include Stephen Craig Cashion, Gerald Ludwig, Gary Ezell, Frank R. Goggan III, Dr. Sul Ross Harrington and Dr. Bryan Simons. Memorials can be made to the hospice room at Matagorda General Hospital or to the American Cancer Society. Services are with Bay City Funeral Home under the direction of Dick R. Elkins. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon for Mary Alice Chambless, 2 years old, who died early Tuesday morning. Surviving are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Chambless; one sister, Joyce Eileen; two brothers, Lee Bryan and Larry Glenn. Services were held at the Taylor Brothers Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Davis of the First Baptist Church officiating. Burial was in the Cedarvale Cemetery under the direction of Taylor Brothers.

Yolanda Charles, nine months old son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Charles, passed away at 6:20 p. m. Sunday. Other survivors are three brothers, Dick, Richard, and Eddie. EDNA - Gerald McLendon Clark, of Edna passed away at the age of 81 on October 27, 2016. He was born on January 7, 1935 in Bay City, Texas to Siburn Jefferson Clark Sr. and Gussie Lee McLendon Clark. He is survived by his loving wife, Almetta Sue Clark, and their three children: Gerald Clark, Jr. and his wife Sharla, Christy Clark and Julie Kay Clark. Also remembering him fondly are his six grandchildren: Rocky, Wayne, Brandy, Austin, Tristan, Dylan, and Catherine. Gerald committed himself to public service early on in his life, attending Christian University and The University of Texas before eventually earning his degree in Behavioral Sciences at The University of Houston Victoria. He also served in the U.S. Army as a Counter-Intelligence Special Agent in Italy before returning home to the business of farming and ranching. As a farmer, he served his community in many capacities, including being a President of the Jackson County Farm Bureau and serving on The State Committee of the Farm Service Agency of the United States Department of Agriculture, where he helped shape national agriculture policy. He has been an active member of The Edna Rotary since around 1965, he has served as President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary. He was awarded both The Paul Harris Award and Rotarian of the year. He was also a Director of First Prosperity Bank, a member of The Victoria Symphony Board, and a Precinct Chairman of The Jackson County Democratic Party. Gerald is preceded in death by his parents, and his brother; Siburn Jefferson Clark, Jr. His family and friends will remember him as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, but also as a compassionate leader for the social and environmental issues, a true renaissance man, and an avid Longhorn Fan. In Lieu of Flowers the family suggests that memorial contributions be sent to The First United Methodist Church of Edna - Air Conditioning Fund, P.O. Box 790, Edna, TX 77957. There will be a Celebration of Life Service at 11:30 am on Tuesday, November 1, 2016 at The First United Methodist Church of Edna with Pastor Adam Knapp officiating. At Pledger, a small station on the Southern Pacific on the line between Matagorda and Wharton counties, Frank Stelzig a business man of that place, shot to death another business man by the name of Will Clements, at an early hour this morning. Stelzig used a double-barreled shot gun loaded with buck shot. No particulars are obtainable.
Frank Stelzig Surrenders Frank Stelzig the slayer of Will Clements at Pledger Saturday morning came into Bay City arriving here at about seven o’clock Saturday evening and voluntarily surrendered to Sheriff Frank Rugeley, of Matagorda county. He was promptly incarcerated in the Matagorda county jail, but will sue out a writ of habeas corpus sometime this week. Stelzig has nothing to give out for publication.

Mrs. S. J. (Sol) Cleveland, age 73 years, 2 months and 5 days, died at her residence on South Avenue I, this (Wednesday) morning at 9:10. She was the relict of the late Sol Cleveland. Mrs. Cleveland was born and raised in Matagorda County. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. S. S. Cleveland, one son, J. B. McCain, and one brother, Green Savage. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Taylor Bros. The services will be held at the residence with Rev. Paul Engle officiating. Burial will be in Cedarvale Cemetery immediately after.

After a lingering illness which covered a period of several months, Col. Sol. J. Cleveland, well known citizen of Bay City for many years, passed away at his home last night at 11:55 o’clock, and will be buried in Cedarvale Cemetery tomorrow, the exact hour not having been decided upon up to press time this afternoon. At the time of his demise, Col. Cleveland was a little past 72 years of age, and up until some months ago when his health gave away he carried the weight of years splendidly. Col. Cleveland was a scion of an old and noteworthy Southern family and was a native Texan. One brother, in New York, survived him and a sister in Houston. Another brother, Wm. D. Cleveland Sr., one of the oldest and most successful merchants of Houston, passed away a few years back. Col Cleveland was a scion of an old and noteworthy Southern family and was a native Texan. Cleveland was a typical Texan, and followed the cattle industry from the time when it tried men’s souls to trek the trail to the Kansas markets until ill health forced him to give it up. On early Texas history and the cattle industry, no man was better posted and he could, in his quaint and unique way, entertain for hours over border history and stories of early Texas. Since coming to Bay City some years ago, Col. Cleveland made many friends who gathered about him daily during his afflictions, administering kindly relief and assistance to him. He is survived by his wife, who has the sympathy of the entire community in this, her greatest trial.

Byron R. Cole, 62, of Bay City died in Matagorda General Hospital Friday. He is survived by his wife, Maurine DeLano Cole of Bay City; two daughters, Cecile Cole Janssen of Victoria and Cordella Jane Douglas of Bay City; one sister, Joan Cole of Mattoon, Ill.; and his mother, Mrs. Rose Persinger Cole of Mattoon, Ill.; and four grandchildren. Services are scheduled for today at 3 p. m. at First United Methodist Church with Rev. James E. Thompson officiating. Interment will be in Cedarvale Cemetery with Wade Ashcraft, Craig Ashcraft, Pete Arnold, “Six” Augsburger, J. D. Voyles, and Frank Baker, Jr., serving as pallbearers will be Luther Bunch, Bill Ingram, Bob Renfro, Dick Dawdy, Bubba Castleton, Rowland Rugeley, Sam Maglitto, Roy Polk, D. F. Funeral services for Mary Pike Condrey, 82, of Bay City will be held 2 p. m. Friday at Church of God of Prophecy with the Rev. James Hall and the Rev. John A. Kroon officiating. Burial will be held at Cedarvale Cemetery. Mrs. Condrey was born May 25, 1904, in Franklin County, Texas and died Oct. 28, 1986, at Matagorda General Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Edward King and the former Etta Elliott. Survivors include: son, Vernon Pike of Tecumseh, Neb.; daughters, Etta Caldwell of Longview, Evey Dean West of Brazoria and Ruth Harris of Bay City; 13 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. Pallbearers include David West, Sammy West, Jimmy West, Bill Miller, Bobby Harris Jr., and Benny Stevens. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Church of God of Prophecy or the American Cancer Society. Arrangements were made with Bay City Funeral Home.

One of the largest funeral processions that ever wended its way to Cedarvale Cemetery was that which sadly followed the remains of our fellow-townsman and friend, Mr. John B. Cookenboo, yesterday. People from all walks of life came to pay their last sad respects and numbers came from nearby towns. It was an open evidence of the love and esteem of his fellowmen, neighbors and friends. John B. Cookenboo, aged forty-eight years, four months and twenty-four days died suddenly at Wharton Saturday at 12:30 p. m., while in the discharge of his duties of the firm he represented and was buried here yesterday at 4:00 o’clock, the Rev. J. F. Carter, of the Methodist Church, officiating. The remains were met at the Santa Fe southbound and conveyed to the residence, corner of Avenue I and Second Street, accompanied by the family and members of the W. O. W. under the auspices of which the funeral was arranged and held. After the arrival and until the funeral large numbers of friends visited the home to give sympathy and kind ministrations to the heart-broken wife and children and to accompany them to the last resting place. Decedent was born in Matagorda and was raised in this county. Being of a quite, lovable disposition, honest and upright, he made during his life with us countless numbers of friends. At a young age he was married to Miss Daisy McMahan, of Navasota and to them were born three children, Eugene, Leslie and Daisy. The wife and children survive him. Mr. Cookenboo was a member of the Methodist Church and the W. O. W. Lodge. Just Friday Mr. Cookenboo was on the streets of Bay City apparently in the very best of health. Saturday he was dead. Life’s uncertainty is again exemplified, this time taking from our midst one we loved and respected and whose friendship we cherished.

August Cordaway, around 85 years old, was found dead in his room Saturday morning about 10 o’clock. He had been dead for some time when the body was discovered. Funeral services were held Sunday at the Matchett-Newman Funeral home with the Rev. C. J. Martin officiating. Burial was in the Cedarvale Cemetery. Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. T. G. Rogers, and Mrs. J. L. Flores of San Antonio, and one son, Jim Cordaway.

Coston, Grover H., 79, of Bay City, in the Veterans Hospital in Houston, Sunday, July 2. Services Tuesday at 4 p. m. at the Taylor Brothers Funeral Chapel. The little baby girl of Mrs. __ Cox died in the northern part of town Saturday afternoon. Its age was nine months. It was buried Sunday at eleven o’clock in the Cedarvale Cemetery.

Funeral services for Margaret Isabell Craft, 83, of Bay City, will be held at 3 p. m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Frank Seaman officiating. Burial will be in Cedarvale Cemetery. Mrs. Craft was born Sept. 9, 1901, in Yoakum, and died Feb. 8, 1985, at Matagorda General Hospital. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Betty Ann and Ned Daniels of Midland; sons and daughters-in-law, Frank and Eileen Craft, James and Bonnie Craft and Robert and Mona Craft, all of Bay City; a brother, Crawford Mearns of El Paso; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Pallbearers include Robby, Chris, Neal and Frank Craft, Jr., Reagan and Steve Daniels and Mark Finlay. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank D. Last Thanksgiving day, Bob Cratty, a recluse, left his shack on the LeTulle hunting preserve in the vicinity of Betts Lake and disappeared. Parties who had a habit of calling on Cratty noticed that he had been making bread as some dough was left in the pan. His dog and cat and gun were also left in the house. Search was started and carried on for some time, but without success. Yesterday, while exploring a section of the river, Mr. Hill found the remains on a dam in Ramsey’s ditch. Securing help the body was brought to the city and turned over to the Walker Furniture Co.’s undertaking department. As far as is known Cratty had no relatives and no one seems to know anything about him or his past. He has been here for years and lived a recluse in the shack up there in the river bottom for years.
