The Ninetieth Psalms, Verse Ten tells us that, “Our days may come to seventy years, or eighty, if our strength endures; yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away.” God’s mercy and favor allowed the days of McKinley Barnes, Jr. to roll on a little longer. McKinley Barnes Jr., affectionately known by most as (Cheat) was born on October 16, 1931, in Mid-field, Texas. He was the third child born to the late Lenora V. Spradley Barnes and McKinley Barnes Sr. McKinley made his transition from labor to reward on January 20, 2025, at Matagorda Regional Medical Center. He worked as a Ranch Hand/ Cowboy for over 60 years, with the bulk of that time working for and with Jim Brown on Brown’s Ponderosa Ranch in Cedar Lane, Texas. McKinley formally retired in 2012 and spent the remaining years living quietly and peacefully on the ranch he called home for forty plus years. McKinley was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Mercidee and Carrie Louise, brothers Richard and Thomas, and his second born daughter, Linda Renaye Barnes. McKinley met, fell in love and married Mattie Jean Sardinea, mother of Linda, who also preceded him in death. Generally we think of our legacy as exclusively forthcoming, something we will leave behind when we’re gone. But consider that your legacy is more than accomplishments. It’s shaped constantly by every person whose path crosses yours and with every decision you make. It isn’t celebrating with people on their best days or even supporting them on their worst. It’s different for every person you encounter. Your legacy is everything that’s “you,” that is put into the world to resonate for generations to come. At the most basic level, illustrating who a person is at their core is complicated by perspective. There’s no one truth, it simply depends on who is asked. Ben Blackburn was many things to many people, substantiating that vast contradictions can coexist. Reviewing remarkable impressions of Ben’s life, it became clear that regardless what words describe them, remarkable impressions lost their luster, while the multitude of insignificant experiences shine brightly. These experiences determine how a person’s essence becomes words. The words become stories; WE all become stories. How Ben will genuinely be remembered, will be determined by perspective. I hope to tell enough of Ben’s story from my perspective to illuminate the lasting impact he’s left us and the legacy that will transcend all his remarkable accomplishments. I’d also like to learn more, from other’s perspectives. Benjamin Lewis Blackburn, Jr., 77, of Lometa, Texas, passed away on July 31, 2025 after an extended health crisis. The youngest child of Ben Blackburn, Sr and Ruth Jordan Blackburn, Ben was born September 17, 1947 in Palacios, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ben, Sr. and Ruth; his first wife, Kathy; brothers, Jerod (Sonny) Viets (and sister-in-law, Evelyn) and Edward (Bubba) Blackburn; sisters, Barbara (Blackburn), Myrtle (Tiny) Holloway (and brother-in-law, Clyde), Patricia Smith (and brother-in-law, JB), and Benita Thompson (and brother-in-law, OB); brother-in-law, Eugene Zemanek; nieces, Catherine Curtis and Sharon Ruth Pegram; great nephew, Stephen David Vance and nephews, Johnny Clyde Holloway and Jerod Holloway. He is survived by his devoted wife of 43 years, Vivian Bohning Blackburn; children, Kimberly (& Bobby) Davis, Benjamin L. Blackburn III, Brandon L. (& Lacey) Blackburn, and Melissa Bautista; sister, Pearl B. Zemanek; ten grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Loved ones are invited to share their stories and join the family for the Committal Service at 2 pm on August 8, 2025 at Hawley Cemetery, El Maton, Matagorda County, Texas.

The last goodbye is always the hardest one to say… James Richard Buis passed away peacefully March 5, 2024 at the age of 84 in his beach house in Seabrook, Texas. He was a beloved father, grandpa, husband, brother and uncle also known as James, Dad, Pawpaw, and Uncle Richard. A proud family man, Master Gardener, Air Force veteran, draftsman and mechanical engineer whose assignments took him to live and work coast-to-coast from his birth sate of NC to the Philippines, Michigan, Florida, Texas, Louisiana, Colorado, California, Tennessee, Arkansas and Arizona. Throughout his life, he always enjoyed new places and adventures, flowers, Dodge pick-up trucks, stained-glass, collecting wood carvings, Bud mugs and beautiful paintings as well as listening to good country music, but of all he loved meeting new friends. His humor, smile and enthusiasm for life will truly be missed by all that knew him and loved him. The endearing legacy of commitment to family, career and living life to the fullest will be carried on by his oldest son, Jaimie; daughter, Sonya; youngest son, Jason; his grandson, Evan and granddaughter-in-law, Hailee. He loved us and was proud of us all…more than we can know. He was also always proud of and loved his Dutch heritage and North Carolina roots that include his parents: Peter and Estella Buis and siblings: Cecil Buis, Jean Long, David Guis, Edith Frost who have preceded him to Heaven and his two surviving siblings: younger brother, Charlie and younger sister, Emily as well as 3 generations of nephews and nieces, some of whom he never met in-person but always loved hearing about. As his daughter, I was honored to serve as his primary caregiver for the last years of his life, but more than that I was blessed for 57 years to call him “Dad.” He was my forever mentor, advisor, role model, friend, my steady rock of dependability when life threw me curve balls and my biggest fan when I accomplished my dreams. His positive outlook showed me how to be courageous and brave, never quit and no matter how hard it gets never lose your faith.
I LOVE YOU DAD – see you in Heaven one day. |

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Michael Nixon Burnside on April 22, 2025, at his ranch outside Jourdanton, Texas, of metastatic lung cancer at 77 years old. Mike was born into a long line of farmers on August 31, 1947, in San Antonio, Texas. After surviving childhood polio, he grew up farming rice and running cows with his father near Baytown, Texas, until his father's untimely death in 1960. Mike graduated in 1965 from Robert E. Lee High School in Baytown, where he took time out from working on friends' cars to attend class. Mike met his wife, Connie Cook, in high school, and they married in 1966. They both attended Texas A&M, where Connie was allowed to enroll because she was married to an Aggie. Mike obtained a BS in Agronomy in 1969, worked briefly for the new owner of the farm he grew up on, and then moved to Bay City, Texas, in 1971, where he farmed rice and raised three children: Mitzi, Jason, and Amy. In Bay City, Mike farmed rice and several row crops for 53 years, regularly producing the outstanding crop yields that earned him the nickname "Magic." He bought a tract of land near Jourdanton, Texas, in 2010 and turned it into a treasured ranch, perfecting it over fifteen years. He retired from farming and became a rancher for the remainder of his life (in spite of having told his family to "shoot him" if he ever bought a cow). To those who knew and loved him, Mike answered to many names—Papa, The Colonel, Gravy, Magic, Boone, Uncle Mike, and Mikey. In every role he embraced—husband, father, friend, brother, hunter, fisherman, farmer, rancher, and community member—Mike brought unparalleled dedication, wisdom, and integrity. The things Mike loved most in his life were his family, early morning breakfast & coffee with friends, farming, the Jourdanton ranch (The Place), his Brangus cattle, fishing, deer hunting, and his chihuahuas. For all of us, Mike was always there, a provider and protector for all who knew him. He was the "Go-To Problem Solver" for fellow farmers, ranchers, businessmen, and for friends, family, and family friends throughout his life. He was a man of few words, but his words carried weight and had great significance. His integrity was an inspiration for everyone who knew him. Mike was preceded in death by his father, Neil; mother, Sissie; and grandson, Christian. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Connie; mother-in-law, Gerry; sister, Beth; brother, Tommy (Dayle); sister-in-law, Linda; daughter, Mitzi, grandchildren, Michael and Mya; son, Jason (Tina); grandchildren, Zane and Zaelyn; daughter, Amy; nephews & nieces, Chuck and Corey, Jake, Brandy and Bianca; and his Chihuahua soul mate, Maggie. A Celebration of Mike's life will be held at Stone's Market, 1840 7th Street, Bay City, Texas, at 11 AM on Saturday, May 3, 2025. In lieu of flowers, keeping with Mike's lifelong dedication to agriculture and investing in future generations, the family requests memorial contributions be made to either The Matagorda County Fair and Livestock Association and mail to P.O. Box 1803, Bay City, Texas 77404-1803) or The Jourdanton FFA Booster Club (P.O. Box 927, Jourdanton, Texas 78026 (please indicate "In Memory of Mike Burnside" in Memo ).
