Mrs. T. J. Bacon – Mollie Bacon
Mrs. T. J. Bacon, of Midfield, died at the Loos
Hospital in this city yesterday morning at 9:15 and was buried
from the Methodist Church yesterday afternoon at 5 o’clock, Rev.
O. E. Vivion officiating.
Mrs. Bacon’s demise followed years of illness.
Some days back she was brought here for an operation, but her
condition would not permit it.
Mrs. Bacon had been a resident of this county for
a number of years, coming here from Victoria. She had been a
lifelong member of the Baptist Church and was strong in her
religious beliefs. She was a devoted wife and mother and is
survived by her husband, Mr. T. J. Bacon, and one son, Mr. A. J.
Bacon.
When the news of Mrs. Bacon’s death was sent out
quite a number of Bay City people took charge of the funeral
arrangements and attended to all details for the husband and
son.
The Tribune

in the loss of a loving wife and mother.

Lee Bailey, age 101 passed away Tuesday, June
20, 2017. She was born May 6, 1916 in Rock Port,
Missouri. Services and burial will take place in
Rock Port, Missouri at a later date. Under the
direction of Artero Memorial Chapels in

Mr. Weston Bailey Dead
Mr. Weston Bailey died at his residence in Bay
City on Tuesday, February 15, and was buried in the Cedarvale
Cemetery at 11 o’clock on Wednesday morning.
Mr. Bailey was well favorably known in Wharton,
where he and his estimable family resided for several months
during which time he was connected with the grading contract
work of the public roads being constructed on account of the
closing of the National Bank in which the road bonds were
deposited.
Mr. and Mrs. Bailey made many friends while
residents of this city, and the sympathy of a large circle of
friends and acquaintances go to the bereaved wife and children
in the loss of their husband and father—Wharton Adviser.

Mrs. Fannie E. Baker
After an illness of several months, Mrs.
Fannie E. Baker, for many years a resident of this city,
died at her home on East 4th St., this
morning at 5 o’clock and was buried in Cedarvale
Cemetery this afternoon at 4 o’clock.
Mrs. Baker was 49 years, 4 months and 20
days of age. She was a consistent member of the
Christian Church and had many friends in the city
amongst whom she has mingled for many years.
Surviving her are her two children,
Robert of this city, and Mrs. George Pepper of Rock
Springs, who were with her mother when the end came.
The Tribune

The funeral of Mrs. Fannie E. Baker,
which took place this afternoon was largely attended by
the friends and acquaintances of the family. The
services were conducted by Rev. Gilliam, of the Baptist
Church.

G. W. Baker
Mr. G. W. Baker, for the past 44 years a
resident of Matagorda County, died at his home in this
city last night at the age of 67 years, 6 months and 5
days, after an illness of some duration.
Mr. Baker was born in Tennessee June 15,
1847, and twenty-three years later moved to Matagorda
County. Twenty-one years ago he married Miss Nettie
Elliott, who survives him. He also left four children,
G. W. Jr., Nettie, Lorena and Robert.
Decedent was for 17 years constable in
this county and belonged to the State Constables’
Association. He was also a member of the Woodmen of the
World, under the auspices of which lodge he will be
buried in Cedarvale Cemetery Sunday afternoon at 2:30
o’clock.
Being a Baptist, the religious services
will be conducted by Rev. O. B. Falls, of the Baptist
Church.
The Tribune

Stanley D. Barbour
Stanley, the little infant son of Mr. and Mrs. W.
D. Barbour, passed away this morning about 3:45 o’clock. Age 10
months, eighteen days.
Funeral services were held this afternoon at 4:30
o’clock from the Episcopal Church with Rev. Paul Engle
officiating.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of
Walker-Matchett Funeral Home.

Final Rites Held Here Saturday For
Robert B. Barnes, 81
Final rites for Robert B. Barnes, 81, of Bay City
and Granger were held Saturday from the Taylor Brothers Funeral
Home chapel, with the Rev. Allen O. Webb officiating.
A retired businessman, Mr. Barnes was buried in
Cedarvale Cemetery. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Myrtle
McLaughlin of Granger.
Mr. Barnes was found dead of gunshot wounds late
Friday afternoon in an automobile parked near the grave of his
wife in Cedarvale Cemetery. Sheriff’s officers reported a .45
caliber revolver was on the seat beside him.

Esperanza “Hope” Barron
June 24, 1947 - May 18, 2017
Esperanza
“Hope” Barron has gone home to be with the Lord. She was born on
June 24, 1947 in Lane City, Texas to Emilio and Ignacia Barron
and passed away on May 18, 2017 in San Antonio, Texas.
She was a
life-long resident of Bay City, Texas where she worked for more
than twenty years at Walker’s Seed and Garden Center and for
twelve years at Palais Royal.
She is
survived by her daughter, Leah Cordoba Torrez, son-in-law,
Victor Torrez, and three grandchildren, Gia, Marcy, and Victor
Cole Torrez, all of San Antonio; brother, Paul Barron of
Victoria, Texas; sister, Maria Ramirez and brother-in-law Joe
Ramirez of Wharton; sister, Blanca Gonzalez and brother-in-law,
Oscar Gonzalez of Bay City; brother, Daniel Caballero and
sister-in-law Alice Caballero of Bay City; and a very loving
host of nieces and nephews.
She was
preceded in death by her parents, Emilio and Ignacia Barron;
brother, Johnny V. Barron; sister, Alicia B. Lopez; brother,
Alejandro Barron; and niece, Belinda Marie Barron.
Services will
be held on June 3, 2017 at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist
Church in Bay City, Texas, with interment to follow at Cedarvale
Cemetery in Bay City, Texas.
The family
would like to express their deepest gratitude to Hope’s extended
family and friends for the immense love and support throughout
this journey.

J. D. Bashaw
J. D.
Bashaw, age 78, whose former home was in Markham, died at the
Loos Hospital January 5 and was buried in the Bay City cemetery
by friends.
Mr.
Bashaw has been sick for some months and the Ladies Federation
of Missionary Clubs of Bay City has had the care of him during
this time.
When it
was found necessary, he was sent to the Loos Hospital on
December 16 and remained there under the care of good nurses and
physicians until his death.
Everything was done for him, but disease and old age finally
took him to his reward.

Died at Port Arthur –
Mary M. Beakes
Word was
received in Bay City yesterday of the death of Mrs. W. L. Beakes,
who died in Port Arthur Saturday. The remains will arrive in Bay
City tomorrow on the S. P. and funeral will be held from the
depot.
Mrs.
Beakes is a sister of C. W. and C. E. Lee, and a cousin to Amos
Lee.

John Clifford “Clicker” Beard, 44, of Blessing passed away April
28, 2017. He was born July 30, 1972 in Bay City to Laurence
Fredrich Beard and Rebecca Jean Gates.
He was preceded in death by his father Laurence “Buck” Beard and
grandparents Edna Beard, Lydia Gates and John Beard.
Survivors include his mother Rebecca Beard of Blessing;
grandfather John C. Gates of Blessing; companion Sonja Whitaker
of Blessing; sister Iona Kay Wilder (Mark Calhoun); daughters
Alexa, Jayden and Haley Beard & step-daughter Lani Ruby all of
Blessing; niece Becka Wilder (Mark Ibarra); nephews Jonathan
Calhoun and Jeff Calhoun; great niece & nephew Aubree and Aiden
Ibarra along with many cousins, family and friends.
The family will receive friends and relatives from 1:00 PM until
3:00 PM Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home.

WHARTON - Lonnie Frank
Beard was called home by his beloved Lord and Savior Jesus
Christ on Thursday, June 15, 2017. He was born near Palacios,
Texas on July 8, 1938.
He is survived by his wife
of 57 years, Rosalie Wittig Beard, his daughters, Sherrie
Whitehead and husband Steven of Edna, Bonnie Pflughaupt and
husband Gary of El Campo, and son, Michael Beard and wife Kim of
Wharton, ten grandchildren and one great grandchild.
He is also survived by his
twin brother, Donnie and wife Carol Ann of Port Lavaca, brother
Tommy Beard and wife Mary Kay of Palacios, and sister Thelma
Holloway of Palacios.
He was preceded in death
by his parents, Joe and Alice Beard, brothers Everett and Joe
Ray and sisters, Lucille Beard and Jeanne Partain.
After graduating from
Texas A&M University in 1960, he married Rosalie Wittig of
Mackay, Texas, on June 5th, 1960. Lonnie served his country in
the Armed Forces for the next six years. 'Grandad' will always
be remembered by his love for God, family, others, his
light-heartedness, singing, playing dominoes and farming.
In lieu of flowers,
memorials may be sent to St. John's Lutheran Church, 614 Pecan
Street, Wharton, Texas 77488, designated towards the Parish Hall
Renovation Fund.
Visitation will be
Tuesday, June 20 from 5 - 8 p.m. at Wharton Funeral Home.

Victor Becerra, Sr., 87, of Bay City, passed away June 1, 2017.
He was born July 28, 1929 in Gonzales, TX to Anestacio and
Virginia Cordova Becerra.
Victor is preceded in death by his parents; one brother, one
sister and grandson Christopher DeWayne Moore. He is survived by
his wife Petra Ramon Becerra; daughters Maria Moore (Dan) of Bay
City, Alicia B. Chase (Raymond) of Sugar Land, TX, Sylvia Sosa
(Abel) of Houston, Janie Rodriguez of Dallas, Nancy Torres
(Hector) of Pasadena, TX and Virginia Campos (Angel) of Houston;
sons Victor Becerra, Jr. (Angie) of Bay City, Jesse Becerra
(Yvette) of Brazoria and Eric Becerra (Dana) of Bay City.; 19
grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great
grandchild.
The family will receive friends and relatives beginning at
5:00pm Monday, June 5 at the funeral home. The Rosary will be at
6:30pm. Funeral services will be 2:00pm Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at
Holy Cross Catholic Church with Msgr. Casey Jarzombek

Everett R. Bell, Sr.
While attending the football game at the high
school stadium Monday afternoon, E. R. Bell was stricken
suddenly with acute indigestion and was conveyed to his home
about three blocks from the school, where he expired within a
few moments.
This sad occurrence has been a severe shock to
the many friends of the family in the city and throughout the
county, where Mr. Bell was well and favorably known.
E. R. Bell was born in Birmingham, Alabama, 49
years ago. He moved to Texas in 1903 and located at Corpus
Christi, where he was married to Miss Emma Clark in October,
1907. To this union there were born four children, C. R., who
died in infancy; Getha, E. R., Jr., and Curtis Blucher. Mrs.
Bell preceded her husband in death on December 20, 1929, and was
buried in Cedarvale Cemetery. Mr. Bell’s remains were laid to
rest there this afternoon.
Mr. Bell brought his family to Matagorda County
in 1921 to engage in the produce business.
Surviving the deceased are his three children,
Miss Getha, C. R. and Blucher, and three brothers, Thomas Bell
of Gridley, California; Russell Bell and B. B. Bell, both of
this county.
The funeral, under the direction of Taylor
Brothers, was held from the First Baptist Church this afternoon
at 3:30 o’clock, Rev. Odis Rainer officiating.
Many out-of-town friends and relatives arrived
immediately after the summons to pay their last sad respects to
be a good citizen and a devoted father and friend to all.

Judge Ruth Jackson Blake
August 2, 1931 - July 24, 2016
Judge Ruth Jackson Blake, the oldest child of Abernathy Cline
and Ruth Jackson, was born in New Gulf, Texas, on August 2, 1931
and died in Tyler, Texas, on July 24, 2016.
Ruth is survived by her adoptive mother, Lois Jones; sisters
Helene Blake and Sharon Hazell-Alvarez; sons and
daughters-in-law, Bil and Cindy Blake, Steven and Shirley Blake,
Rabitt and Cindy Blake, Eddie and Shannon Blake; daughter and
son-in-law, Shirley and Steven Gray; foster children, Marie
Robinson, Jessica Ross and Fred Nichols; 29 grandchildren, 23
great-grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren; plus a
multitude of other extended family and friends. She was preceded
in death by her former husband, two sisters and two brothers.
She grew up in East Texas and at the age of 15, married Robert
Blake. After having four children in less than seven years, she
attended San Jacinto Junior College, University of Houston, and
Bates School of Law, receiving a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree
in June 1966 and passed the State Bar Exam that summer.
Although she lived and practiced law in several places including
England and Wyoming where she was the first female County
Attorney in the state, her roots brought her back to East Texas
when she moved to Tyler in 1981.
She became the first female judge seated in Smith County when
she served part of a term on the County Court at Law No. 2 in
1983. She then served as an assistant district attorney for
Smith County.
In 1985, she was appointed to the bench as a judge for the 321st
District Court from which she retired in 1997. During her time
as a judge, she also helped establish CASA of Smith County.
Since her retirement, she continued judicial duties as a
visiting judge in neighboring counties.
Funeral services for Judge Ruth Jackson Blake are scheduled for
2:00 p.m., Friday, July 29, 2016 in the chapel of Lloyd James
Funeral Home with Pastor Danny Sandifer officiating. Visitation
will be 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Thursday, July 28, 2016 at Lloyd
James Funeral Home. Burial will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, July 30,
2016 in Palacios Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to CASA
for Kids of East Texas or the Hospice of East Texas Foundation.

Blaylock Jr.
March 23, 1931 - March 23, 2017
Hulen Allen
(Al) Blaylock Jr. was born in Bay City, Texas on March 23, 1931,
and exited this world on March 23, 2017, his 86th birthday.
He is survived
by his wife of 63 years, Nancy Moore Blaylock; his son and his
wife, Layton and Nita Blaylock; his daughter and her husband,
Susan and Dr. Paul Funk; his grandchildren, Leeann and Layton
Funk; and his niece and her husband, Margaret and Dr. Charles
Goolsbee.
He was
preceded in death by his parents, Hulen Allen (Buck) Blaylock
and Cynthia Caroline (Callie) Carrington Blaylock; his sister,
Cleo Barkley; and his nephew, Howard Norman Barkley III.
Al graduated
from Bay City High School, earned a BBA from Southwest Texas
State Teachers College in San Marcos, and served his country as
a First Lt. in the Marine Corps. He went on to graduate from The
University of Texas with a BSME and received his Master of
Science in Engineering Administration from SMU. He spent most of
his career at Texas Instruments as a mechanical engineer.
Al was an
enthusiastic golfer, fisherman, world traveler, bridge player,
and gardener. He also enjoyed dancing for 38 years with the
Swingin’ Saints Square Dance Club and was an avid Longhorn and
Cowboy fan. Most of all he loved his family, and they adored
him.
The family
would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Al’s devoted
caregiver O. J. Achonwa. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s
Association.
Visitation
will be at Restland Funeral Home in Dallas, Texas on Tuesday,
March 28, 2017 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
A memorial
service will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. on March

Audrey Bouldin

Audrey was born to the late Leno and Roxie Gartica, in
Matagorda, TX on May 10, 1931. There she was raised along with
her 13 other siblings. Although she was blessed with a large and
loving family she only birthed 2 children, Patricia and Donald
"David" helped to raise a step-daughter Cassandra and raised a
grandson Charles. She was married to Charles Bouldin on June 24,
1967 and they remained together for 32 years until his untimely
death on October 3, 1999.
She
accepted a position at Matagorda General Hospital in the
pediatrics unit where she remained for many years.
Audrey spent the majority of her adult life serving in the
Bethel Baptist Church on the ushers and nurses board and she
taught Sunday School class. She was a mighty woman of God that
would be her lifelong support from an early age. She was an
expression of God's love to her family and friends.
She
had a Bachelor's Degree in Love.
She
is preceded in death by her parents Leno and Roxie Gartica; 3
brothers-Wallace Gartica, Buddy Gartica & Gene Gartica; 4
sisters-Roxie Chenier, Hollis Word, Sophronia Burrell & Gladys
Young.

Rev. Dr.
Hollie Lee Briscoe Jr., 84 of Richmond, passed away on June 22,
2017.
He was born on
February 2, 1933 in Houston to the late Hollie Lee Briscoe, Sr.
and Nora Hurst Briscoe.
He graduated
from Texas A & M University where he was a member of the Corp of
Cadets and the Singing Cadets. He served as Lt. in the U.S. Air
Force. Hollie earned his Doctorate from Southwestern Theological
Seminary, and was founding Pastor of Carancahua Chapel, and was
Pastor of several churches in Texas and Oklahoma.
He is survived
by his wife, DeLaine Briscoe of Richmond; daughters, Leigh Ann
Warzecha of Dallas, Susan Greenwood of Jonesboro, Arkansas,
Wendy Tingle of Buies Creek, North Carolina, and Wendy Kirkby of
Naples, Florida; sons, Blake Briscoe of Eastland, Dan Briscoe of
Richmond and Jerrod Fehmel; 18 grandchildren; eight great
grandchildren; and sister, Elaine Briscoe of Kensington,
Maryland.
A Memorial
service was be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 26, 2017, at
Carancahua Chapel at the Carancahua Community Center with Dr.
Mike Zimmerman and Pastor Bob Keptra officiating.
