A message Tuesday morning from Honolulu conveying the news that Carl Backen, was dead came as a great shock to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Backen and their many friends. On January 4 he had undergone an operation for an ulcerated stomach and a friend of his had kept his parents informed as to his condition. The latest report was of his improvement and told them not to worry, that he was thought to be recovering nicely. The message Tuesday stated he died Sunday, Feb. 4. Carl was twenty-seven years old. He was born in Cameron, but moved here when just a young boy and attended our schools. After graduation with the class of 1935, he joined the Navy and spent six years in that service. For the past few years he has been employed in an Airplane Propeller shop in Honolulu. We join the many friends in extending to the bereaved family our deepest sympathy in this hour of great sorrow.
