One Dead, Two Injured In Auto Wreck Tuesday A. M.

Lt. Harold Bjune, stationed at Camp Hulen was fatally injured in a car wreck about 2:30 Tuesday morning on highway 35 between the city limits and Camp Hulen. Lieutenant Bjune was being taken to camp by R. F. Dawson, manager of the Palacios Pavilion, and Miss Pearl Allen, who were also badly injured in the crash. All three were taken to the hospital in the camp for treatment, where Lt. Bjune died a few hours later.

Miss Allen and Mr. Dawson were taken to the hospital in the camp Wednesday. The former we learn has no serious injuries except some very bad face lacerations. Mr. Dawson received some broken bones, crushed knee cap, cuts and bruises that make his condition more serious.

Details of the accident have not been officially reported, but it is thought to have been caused by a parked car on the highway, that Mr. Dawson probably did not see in time to avoid the crash, as he was meeting a car coming toward Palacios. Three cars were involved and Mr. Dawson’s was practically demolished.

Clinton Doyle Burchfield
April 13, 1926 – December 24, 2015

Funeral services for Clinton Doyle Burchfield, 89, of Livingston, Texas, were held Monday, December 28, 2015, at 2 p.m., in the Cochran Funeral Home Chapel in Livingston, Texas, with Bro. Harold Isaacs officiating.  Military Honors were be provided by the VFW Post #8568

Interment followed in the Union Springs Cemetery in Corrigan, Texas

Visitation was held Sunday, December 27, 2015, from 5 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., in the Cochran Funeral Home in Livingston, Texas.

Clinton Burchfield died peacefully with his family by his side, on December 24, 2015.

He was born on April 13, 1926, in Livingston, Texas, to Mitchell and Velma Burchfield.

Clinton grew up and went to school in Livingston, and joined the Army in November of 1945.  In the Army, he was a paratrooper and member of the 187th Glider Infantry.  After training, he was sent overseas and was part of the Army of Occupation (Japan).  After seven months in Japan, and achieving the rank of Corporal, he returned to Texas and was discharged at Fort Sam Houston.

Soon after returning to Livingston, he went to barber school and met his wife, Alma Smith of Goodrich, Texas.  In the fall of 1949, he headed south to find a place to start his barber business.  In September of 1949, they settled in Bay City, Texas.  Clinton cut hair in Bay City longer than anyone else - over 40 years.  He lived in Bay City for close to 65 years.

Clinton was an avid fisherman and hunter.  While cutting hair he often told his customers that he was the “Best Fisherman in the County”.  Following in his brother’s, Talmadge and Jesse Coleman’s, footsteps, Clinton earned his private pilot’s license while in Bay City.  He owned and flew his own plane, a Piper Clipper.  Throughout the ‘60’s and early ‘70’s, he would often fly his wife and daughter to Livingston for visits with his family.

In 1984, his first grandson, Matthew was born, followed by Michael, in 1987.  Clinton could now stop asking his daughter if he would have to “buy himself a grandchild”.  Matthew and Michael became the center of his life.  He taught them how to hunt and fish, almost as good as himself.

In 1994, Clinton was diagnosed with a heart condition that caused him to retire from the haircutting business.  In 1995, Clinton lost his wife Alma, and he spent the next 20 years splitting his time between Bay City and Livingston, with many visits to New York to see his grandchildren.

During his retirement, Clinton was lucky to have many special people in his life. Two of the most important, were Jessie Long and Kay Long Campbell.  They provided friendship and support for over 20 years.

When Jessie Long died in November, 2014, it was time to move back to Livingston.  He resided at The Bradford at Brookside Nursing Home for the last year of his life.  This put Clinton close to his sister, Sammie Burchfield Smith and her husband, Clyde.  They were his angels for the last year of his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mitchell and Velma Burchfield; his wife, Alma; his brothers, Jim Hendry, Billy Brooks, Talmadge, Coleman and Truman Burchfield.

He is survived by his daughter, Kay and husband Mark Rolle; his grandsons, Matthew and Michael Rolle; and his sister; Sammie and husband Clyde Smith.

Pallbearers were Matthew Rolle, Michael Rolle, Mark Rolle, Robert Long, Bryan Long and Charles Clark.

Honorary Pallbearers were Clyde Smith, Lawrence Kendrick and Jerry Campbell.
