Obituary – Joseph Martin Baldwin
Joseph Martin Baldwin, who was born
September 24th, 1854, died September 22, 1933. He was
the third son of Capt. Saulsbury Baldwin and Martha Simmons Shaw
Baldwin. He finished his education in Wofford Seminary,
Greenville, S. C., came to Texas in the year 1879, and settled
in Johnson County. On August 20, 1881, he was married to Sarah
Elizabeth Hodges. To this union was born a daughter, Mrs. O. M.
Robinson. There is an adopted son, Charles D. Baldwin, of Geary,
Okla.
The family moved to Palacios in
1920, where the Baldwin and Robinson families lived as one
family and where they have a host of friends who join them in
their deep sorrow.
The funeral service was held at the
Palacios Funeral Home, conducted by Dr. Driskill, assisted by
Evangelist McCall, of Dallas, Texas, of the Baptist Church.
Brother Baldwin joined the Baptist Church at the age of 14, thus
becoming a Christian at an early age. He continued as an active
church and Sunday School worker up to the time of losing his
health, which was several years ago. He spent a number of years
monthly preaching served the people by different churches or
ministers. Brother and Sister Baldwin’s home was known as the
preacher’s home—it made no difference what church the minister
represented; thus manifesting a broad Christian spirit.
For a long time Brother Baldwin did
a large business, having many men under him, and his daughter
told the writer that many of those men told her that they never
heard an ugly word fall from his lips—not one that the most
refined lady would object to hearing.
It was my pleasure to become
acquainted with Mr. Baldwin on his moving to Palacios. During
all these years we have been personal friends and when he became
so affected that he was practically bed-ridden all the time I
soon found that a short visit was a real tonic to him. His
sufferings were so intense at times that he prayed he might be
taken out of that frail body, but he readily consented that
prayers for grace and fortitude to bear up until the Father
would call for him was decidedly the best course to pursue.
Because of the long friendship and
encouraging words the writer was requested to conduct the
funeral. To show the family the respect to which our citizen was
held during the funeral hour.
A kind husband, father, and citizen
has passed onto his reward, but sister Baldwin and the Robinson
family may all rest assured that they are in the midst of
friends.
The following friends were the
pallbearers, C. W. Nester, Dr. J. R. Elliott, T. R. Brandon,
John Bowden, J. C. Stulting and M. E. Rogers. Interment was made
in the Palacios Cemetery, under the direction of the Palacios
Funeral Home.

Betty Joy Buller Killed By Auto
The community was shocked and
grieved to learn of the accidental death of little Betty Joy
Buller when she was struck by a car near the Turtle Bay Bridge
about noon Wednesday. The child, with her mother and a friend,
Mrs. W. E. Fitzgibbons, of St. Louis, was fishing from the Bay.
Mr. Buller and Mr. Fitzgibbons had gone on down to Port O’Connor
in the interest of the shrimping business.
With the impulsiveness of a child,
Betty joy ran onto the pavement for some reason in the path of
an oncoming car. Death was instantaneous. R. L. Ardrey, of
Dallas, driver of the car, brought the party in to the Guffey
Clinic and stayed to render every possible assistance.
Betty Joy was born March 1, 1934 and
died April 10, 1940. She was just a little over six years of
age, and was the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Buller.
Funeral services were held at the
Palacios Funeral Home, at 3 p. m. Thursday, the Rev. L. W.
Crouch officiating.
