Doris Barker

1932 - 2015

Doris J. Barker, 82, was welcomed into heaven by our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Wednesday, April 22, 2015. Memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church of Sweeny, TX on June 11 at 11:00a.m. Interment on a later date at Roselawn Memorial Park in Matagorda County beside her parents.

Doris was born August 6, 1932, to Elbert and Viola Myers in Cedar Hill, TX. Doris was proud of her parents and only brother, Alvin, and grew up in Bay City and Wharton, TX. She spoke fondly of her memories as a child playing with her many cousins on a farm near Mansfield in Tarrant County.

She married, Bobby G. Barker, on December 29, 1953. She is the mother of a son, Robert Barker and daughter, Gabrielle "Gaye Lynn" Rodriguez. She raised her family in Sweeny and was a member of the First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school. She was always active in her children's school and extra-curricular activities. Her hobbies included sewing, painting, playing bridge and decoupage.

Doris graduated from Wharton High School in 1949 where her father, Elbert Myers, was principal and taught mathematics and history. She shared much of her father's philosophy of "teaching five days a week, fishing every Saturday, and going to church every Sunday" excluding the fishing part. In high school, she was a member of the concert band where she played percussion and was a twirler. She also played basketball and volleyball, was class vice-president, an F.F.A. Sweetheart and received an honor award for academic excellence. After graduation, her education continued at University of Texas where she obtained a BS degree in Education in 1953 and was an active member of the PI LAMBDA THETA fraternity, a national honor-society in education. After teaching for a few years, she obtained her Master's degree in elementary education from the University of Houston at Clear Lake in 1976. Doris substituted and taught third grade in Sweeny schools until 1985 after 10 full-time years of service when she retired due to poor health. She divorced on November 30, 1990.

Doris lived the past few years at Carriage Inn in Lake Jackson, TX where she participated in the daily activities of cards, dominos, bingo and outings. She especially enjoyed the musical entertainment that was provided and movie nights with her friends and staff. Her greatest joy was being a mother, grandmother and teacher. In spite of her physical ailments, she continued to show her love and generosity to her family and friends throughout her days. We are better for having known her because of her enthusiasm for life and the joy she derived from teaching and helping others.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Elbert and Viola Myers, and loving brother, R. Alvin Myers. Survivors: Children, Gabrielle Rodriguez (Armando); Robert Barker (Brandei); ex-daughter-in-law, Linda Morris (Larry); grandchildren, Brad Barker and Chad Barker (Lacey); one great-grandchild, Wyatt Barker, and Chad's step-son, Aiden; sister-in-law, Ethel Douglas, and nieces, Bonnie Buenger (Dan) and Lora Pace (Mike); nephew, Rob Myers (Vicki). A special thank you to Carriage Inn for their love and support and to the Turner Family at Lakewood Funeral Chapel for helping with arrangements. The family of Doris Barker deeply appreciates all the expressions of love and consolation during these days of sorrow. May the Lord bless each and every one of you.

Bubba graduated from Bay City High School in 1980. As a young man, Bubba enjoyed bull riding and rodeo. He welcomed the challenge. In his later years, his hobbies included hunting, fishing, working on his trucks, following the PBR circuit regularly, and riding his Harley. Bubba loved going to the beach, four wheeling in the sand, getting a rod wet, and always enjoying a few beers with friends.

He was always pulling pranks and being silly with his infectious personality and laughter. He never met a stranger.

Left to remember him fondly is his cherished son, Justin Carter Bodenburg and daughter-in-law, Katie; his sister Sheri Brune; brother Robert Bodenburg and his loyal, and well-trained dog Black. He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as sisters Deborah Poston and Susie Bodenburg.
