BAY CITY - Joe Anthony Acosta, passed away on Saturday, June 15, 2013 surrounded by family. Anthony was born on June 13, 1936 in Bay City to the late Baldomero and Estella Acosta.

Anthony loved music and history. He never met a stranger. Anthony was there to help those in need.

Anthony is survived by his son, Mark Anthony & wife (Florene) Acosta; grandson, Tykeal Acosta; sisters; Alicia Villarreal, Mary Ann Cervantes; brother, Al Acosta & wife (Lynette), numerous nieces, nephews and other loving relatives.
 
Preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Anna-Liese Acosta Carr; sisters, Lucia DeLos Santos, Esther Acosta, Katy Charles, Estella Silvas; brothers, Able, John Gilbert, and Louis Acosta.

Mass of the Resurrection will be 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with Monsignor Gerry Cernoch celebrant. Rite of committal to follow at Cedarvale Cemetery. Visitation from 2:00-8:00P.M. Tuesday with the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 6:30P.M. at the funeral home.

CEDAR LANE - Mildred "Duchess" Urban Adams, 93, of Cedar Lane passed away Wednesday, May 22, 2013. She was born September 20, 1919 in Bay City to the late Hubert Weisiger & Ada Myrtle Spivey Bowie. Mildred was a life long resident of Matagorda County, and a member of Cedar Lane Baptist Church.

She is survived by her son Hollie Warren Urban & wife Edith of Cedar Lane; brother: Philip Milhouse Bowie & wife Vernie of Cedar Lane; 3 grandsons; 2 great grandsons; 1 great great grandson; 3 granddaughters; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; husbands: Lloyde Morris Urban and James Adams; and 3 sisters: Willie Christie Bowie, Huberta Peterson, and Frances Sophia Shearer.

The family will receive visitors from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Friday, May 24, 2013 at the Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, May 15, 2013 at Cedar Lane Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Bowie Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Harry Urban, Willie Urban, Ronnie Bowie, Mike Bowie, C. L. Pray, Clay Phillips, David Angerstein, and Dennis Griggs. Honorary Pallbearer will be: Harold Urban.

Ismael Smiley Aguilar went to be with his Lord and loved ones on Wednesday, March 27, 2013. Smiley was born on May 23, 1963 in Galveston to the late Domingo and Virginia Hernandez Gazca. Smiley was a loving husband and father who loved to barbeque for his family and friends. Smiley is survived by his wife of 14 years Nora Garza Aguilar, children; Daniel, Smiley Jr., Mike , Marissa, Sarah, Brandon; grandchildren, Jaylynn, Makylah, Aleesah, Aungelie, George lll, Zaydah, Sophia, Mike iv, Amirra, Aaliyah,; brothers, Domingo Jr., Benny, Louis, Sammy; sisters, Pauline, Dora, Stella , Shirley and numerous nieces and nephews. Einar John Ahysen, Sr.
Jan. 17, 1932 – April 24, 2013

Einar John Ahysen, Sr., 81, of Beaumont, died Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at Atria Collier Park, Beaumont. He was born on January 17, 1932, in Port Arthur, to Edna Thibodeaux Ahysen and John Peter Ahysen.

He had been a longtime resident of Beaumont before retiring to the Tyler area, and just recently returned to Beaumont.

Einar was a practicing Christian. He was christened at birth in the Roman Catholic Church. He later served in the Baptist Church. He later became a member of the United Methodist Church and was elected a trustee and a servant wherever he was needed.

Einar’s family and friends will sorely miss him. We look forward to being re-united.

He is survived by: his wife, Nancy Chilton Ahysen; children, Robyn Ahysen Peurifoy and her husband, Mike, of Beaumont; Johnny Ahysen of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Donny Ahysen and his wife, Jami, of Bay City; David A. Ahysen of Beaumont; Troy Grimes and his wife, Staci; and Gina Acevedo and her husband, Lee, all of Lumberton; eleven grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A gathering of Mr. Ahysen’s family and friends for his visitation was at 2 p.m., with his funeral service at 3 p.m., Sunday, April 28, 2013, at Wesley United Methodist Church, 3810 North Major Drive, Beaumont.

His committal will be at Broussard’s Crematorium, Beaumont under the direction of Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont.

A memorial service for interment of Mr. Ahysen’s cremated body will be scheduled at a later date.

Alma A. Allen

Alma A. Allen, 82, of Bay City passed away April 2, 1997 at Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City.

She was born Jan. 11, 1915 in Brady, Texas to Monroe and Myrtle Baker Tollison. She was a life-long resident of Bay City and a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by seven daughters, Billie Jean Krobot and Marie Bertolino both of Sugar Land, JoAnn Perry of Conroe, Kay Mitchell of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Jeanett Batson of Sweeny, Susan DeShazo of Houston, and Glenda Shelton of Kentucky; and by four sons, James Allen of Houston, Frank Allen, Larry Allen, and Bobby Allen all of Bay City; by 16 grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parent, her husband, Floyd Allen, and by a son, H. Charles McCullough.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p. m. Saturday, April 5, 1997 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Chapel with Rev. James Allen officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck.

Enrique “Henry” Alvarez
May 21, 1928 –August 29, 2013

Enrique “Henry” Alvarez went to be with his Lord on Thursday, August 29, 2013.

Henry was born May 21, 1928 in Lordsburg, New Mexico to the late Felipe and Maria Montes Alvarez.

Henry was on the school board in Lordsburg, New Mexico for seven years, where he also served as president. Henry was an active member of L.U.L.A.C. of Lordsburg. Henry served his country in the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division. Henry was retired from Conoco/Phillips and was a security guard at STP. Henry loved to paint, giving the paintings to family members. Henry also loved wood-working, carving numerous things for family and friends.

Henry is survived by: his wife of 57 years, Frances Alvarez; by his children, Anna Marie Ybarra and husband Oscar, Edmund Alvarez and wife Ofelia, Diana Teresa Cordoba and husband Greg, Angela Cleland and husband Michael; 19 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews and other family members.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; son, Enrique, Jr., two brothers, Antonio Alvarez and Trinida Esquivel; and sister, Esperanza Lopez.

Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, September 3, 2013, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with Monsignor Gerry Cernoch, celebrant.

Visitation will be Monday, September 2, 2013, from 1 to 8 p.m., with the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 6:30 p.m., at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 7272 Greenville Ave., Dallas, TX. 75231.

Frances T. Alvarez, 87, of Bay City, passed away on May 4, 2019. Frances was born December 5, 1931 in Lordsburg, New Mexico to the late Antonio and Angela Salinas Trejo.

Frances was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She loved spending time with her family they were the center of her life. Frances was an avid Astros and Rockets fan, and loved to cook for her family.

Frances is survived by her loving family. Children, Anna M. Ybarra & husband Oscar, Edmund F. Alvarez & wife Ofelia, Diana T. Cordoba & husband Greg, Angela A. Cleland & husband Michael; several grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Rosa T. Altuna, and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Enrique Alvarez, son Enrique Alvarez Jr., and brothers Robert Trejo and Fred Salinas.

The visitation will be Monday, May 13 from 5:00-8:00 p.m., with the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 6:30p.m. at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. Mass of the Resurrection will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 14, 2019 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Bay City with Fr. Gabriel Espinosa celebrant. Elenora L. Anderson

Elenora L. Anderson, 95, of Bay City died Monday May 17, 2004.

She was born September 16, 1908 in Bellville, Texas to the late A.C. and Elanora Anderas Frank.

Mrs. Anderson was a member of the St. Peter Lutheran Church, and a lifetime member of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include: daughter and son-in-law, Juanita and J.T. Joines of Richmond; sons and daughters-in-law, Preston and Patsy Anderson of Bay City, and W.O. "Buddy" and Grace Anderson of Van Vleck; grandchildren, Debbie and Mike Frick, Terry and Craig Weathers, Mike and Penny Anderson, Cheryl and Terrell Bullock, Charlotte and Alvin Polasek, Quinton and Carol Joines, Gayle and Kathy Brown, and Allan Brown; 13 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Anderson was preceded in death by: her husband, Rueben R. Anderson; daughter, Reba Brown; and grandson, Winston Eugene Anderson.

A prayer service was held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 18, 2004, at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday May 19, 2004 at Roselawn Memorial Park, with the Rev. Don Story officiating.

Ruben R. “Andy” Anderson, 73, of Ashwood died Thursday, November 30, 1978 at his residence.  He was born December 28, 1904 in Arkansas.  Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Elnora Anderson of Ashwood; daughters, Mrs. Juanita Joines of Thompson, Mrs. Reba Brown of Sugarvalley; sons, Preston Anderson of Bay City, Winston Anderson of Corpus Christi; sisters, Mrs. Grace Garrett, Mrs. Roselee Griggs both of Odessa.  Mrs. Myrtle Taylor of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; brothers, Pete Anderson pf Kermit, Joe Anderson of Graham, nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.  The deceased was a former resident of Ganado moving to this area in 1946 with his family. Retired after 33 years’ service as a pumper and gauger of Exxon Corporation.  A member of the First Methodist Church of Van Vleck, Bay City Lodge No. 865 AF&AM, Bay City Chapter No. 315 R.A.M., Bay City Council, No. 251 R&S.M. and Past Master of the Ganado Masonic Lodge.  Funeral services will be held at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home Chapel, Saturday, December 2, 2:30 pm Rev. Floyd Rorse will officiate.  Interment Roselawn Memorial Park under the auspices of Bay City Lodge No. 863 AF&AM.  Pallbearers will be Mike Anderson, Quintin Joines, Winson E. Anderson, Craig Weathers, Gayle Brown, Allan Brown and Michael Frick.  Arrangement under the direction of Taylor Bros. Funeral Home.

Billy Travis Arbuckle
November 4, 1934 –July 29, 2013

Billy Travis Arbuckle. 78, of Bay City passed away July 29, 2013.

He was born November 4, 1934 in Quanah, Texas to the late Herbert Cromwell Arbuckle Sr. and Laura Odessa Wilfong Arbuckle.

He was a licensed Pharmacist for 50 years and retired from Eckerd’s in 1999. He was well loved by his patients and cared deeply for their well-being.

Bill loved playing pool, was a Jazz enthusiast and was blessed with great culinary skills.

Survivors include: his wife of 32 years, Leeta Stephens Arbuckle; daughters, Dr. Lorna Kathleen Sheriff and husband Steve of Nacogdoches and Laura Linn Kinnard and husband Clavin of Orange; son, Billy T. Arbuckle Jr. and wife Robin of Orlando, Fla.; step-daughter, Kim Owen Scott and husband Gary of Lake Jackson; step-son, Greg Owen and wife Melinda of Van Vleck; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Two brothers, Herbert C. Arbuckle Jr. and Dr. Bert D. Arbuckle preceded him in death.

The family will receive friends and relatives from 5 until 7 p.m., Wednesday at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, August 1, 2013 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Chapel with Dr. Mike Zimmerman officiating.

Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck.

His grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.

Bill Arlitt
(February 26, 1921 - November 12, 2013)

William Brooks Arlitt, 92, of Bay City passed away Tuesday, November 12, 2013 in Houston. He was born February 26, 1921 in Bay City to the late Walter Frederick & Beulah Gladys Arlitt. Bill served his country during World War II as a member of the United States Army. He was a Cradle Member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, member of Bay City Country Club, and a Life member of VFW Post 2438. Bill was an excellent golfer, an avid fisherman, and he loved being with friends and family. He was loved by all, and will be deeply missed.

Bill is survived by his 2 daughters: Susan Turbeville & Malcom Perkins of Houston and Linda Black of Austin; 2 sons: Fritz Arlitt of Alvin and John & Tina Arlitt of Bay City; 8 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and wife: Olive Mary Rowan Arlitt in February of 1984.

The family will receive visitors starting at 10:00 AM Friday, November 15, 2013 at the funeral home. The funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Friday, November 15, 2013 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church with Rev. Brad Sullivan officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck. Pallbearers will be: Douglas Arlitt, Clayton Arlitt, Will Arlitt, Tom Kovar, Malcom Perkins, and Mike Finster.

Luz Arredondo
7 June 1955 – 21 December 2013

PALACIOS - Luz Arredondo passed away on Saturday, December 21st in Victoria, TX at the age of 58. Luz was born in El Campo, TX June 7, 1955 to the late Enrique Arredondo, Sr. and Maria H. Vega.

She is survived by her brothers Enrique Arredondo, Jr. and wife Oralia of Goliad, TX and Alberto Arredondo and wife Leticia of Cuero, TX.

Her family, friends and students were very important to her. She took extreme joy in her nieces and nephew and was truly proud of her great-nephews and nieces traveling from the Gulf Coast to West Texas to show her support for them. Their "Aunt Lucha" will be forever missed.
She was also known as "Coach Dondo". She taught and coached in Palacios, TX for 36 years. She spent her last days away in the hospital so worried about her athletes and students. Her wonderful friends were there until the end making sure they were taken care of in the classroom and competition. She played a huge role in molding lives and she will be missed by all.

Pallbearers are: Imoni Cross, Elijah Cross, Tristan Reyes, Brendan Cathey, Nat Hernandez, Luis Hernandez, Rene Hernandez, and Santos Perez, Jr.

A public rosary will be held at 7:00 PM on Thursday, December 26th and funeral mass at 10:00 AM on Friday, December 27th both at Immaculate Conception Church in Goliad, TX. A memorial service will be held at 6:30 PM on Friday, December 27th at Palacios ISD in the Fine Arts Building.

Rosary and funeral are under the direction of Grace Funeral Home, Goliad, 361-645-3216.

Henry Lester Ashcraft

 

Funeral service for Henry Lester Ashcraft were held at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home last week, with Rev. C. M. Becton officiating.

 

Mr. Ashcraft died Sunday at the Wharton Hospital after a lengthy illness.

 

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. H. L. Ashcraft of Bay City; one daughter, Mr. Inez Book of Waco. Two step-daughter, Mr. F.K. Allen and Mrs. Ruth Childers of Bay City.

 

Two sons, E. J. of Bay City and J. N. Ashcraft of Angleton; four sisters, Mr. Ivy Burleson of Shallow Water, Mrs. Helen Cumby of Marlin, Mrs. Della Chapman of Sulphur, Okla., and Mrs. Agnes Starks of Sweeney.

 

Four Brothers, Herbert of Temple, Clyde of Tahoka, Jack of Hugo, Okla., and John of Bay City.

 

Pallbearers, nephews of the deceased, were Wade, Wyatt, and Clyde Ashcraft, James and Aaron Starks, and Charles McCullough.

Larry Dean Avants

January 30, 1954 – May 15, 2013

VAN VLECK - Larry Dean Avants, 59, of Van Vleck passed away Wednesday, May 15, 2013 while vacationing in the Bahamas. He was born to Herbert and Mary Louise Avants on January 30, 1954 in Corpus Christi, TX. He is survived by his wife Vicky Cross Avants to whom he was married on August 4, 1972.

Also surviving are his mother Mary Louise Jones of Jacksonville; father Herbert Avants of Bay City; two sons Keith (Elvie) Avants of Krum and Scott (Michelle) Avants of Sweeny; six grandchildren Madison, Christopher, Sidney, Cort, Cassy, and Miranda; two sisters: Sheri (Paul) Richardson of Van Vleck and Peggy (Gerald) Brietzke of Bay City; two brothers Stanley (Judy) Avants of Rusk and Herbert (Ann) Avants also of Rusk; along with Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Larry was a long time resident of Matagorda County. He was a dedicated employee of Enterprise Crude Oil where he worked as a Trucking Supervisor. Everyone who encountered him was considered a friend and was honored to have met him. Larry was a loving and dedicated husband of 40 years, a supportive father who always knew the answer and a devoted grandfather. He enjoyed cruises with his wife, camping with friends and family, the Texas Rangers, NHRA drag racing, target shooting, and spending quality time with his grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Tentatively from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Thursday, May 23, 2013 at the funeral home. The funeral service is Tentatively set for 10:00 AM Friday, May 24, 2013 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home with Deacon Guadalupe "Wally" Rodriguez of Holy Cross Catholic Church officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck.

Pallbearers will be: Kim Abshier, David T. Gibbens, Otto "Rocky" Janssen III, Sean Klaiber, Brandon Richardson, and Jonthen "Sweaty" Times. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Patrick Bramble, Gerald Brietzke, Jeffrey Cross, Scott Harris, David Klaiber, Neil Richardson, and Paul Richardson.
