Death of Mrs. Katherine Williams Mrs. Katherine Williams, who departed this life on August 13, 1914, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. B. A. Ryman was a very remarkable woman-remarkable in the vigor and usefulness of a long life; remarkable for the pioneer venture over the ocean into an almost unexplored land; remarkable for the great and creditable family of one hundred descendants most of whom live to do her honor, and all of whom she has had the pleasure of seeing and knowing in life; remarkable in her business capacity and parental care of a large family, in buying the Big Hill land at 50c an acre and by energy and economy paying for the land and educating her children, the land and stock forming the basis for a competency for the family and children. Mrs. Williams was born in a town in Germany on May 17, 1828, and with her parents, Conrad and Elizabeth Franz, in 1845, sailed from Bremen direct for Indianola, and, after a rather tempestuous voyage of 43 days, landed on Texas soil, coming direct to Matagorda. In 1846 she was married to John Aaron Williams, and the couple made their home on the peninsular fronting the gulf, opposite the town of Matagorda. Here they lived till after the terrible storm in 1875. Katherine Franz at an early age in Germany became a member of the Lutheran Church, but as there was no organization of that denomination in Matagorda when she came to this country, she became a member of the Christian church and in that church lived a consistent and devoted Christian till her death. The Williamses lived on the peninsular during the civil war, and was exposed to the dangers of the bombardment of Matagorda by Federal gunboats. Sometime after the bombardment Mr. Williams picked up one of the old shells, and his investigation of the inner portion caused an explosion which tore off a corner of the house and inflicted wounds in his hip which caused his death. A few years later, following the terrible storm of 1875, Mrs. Williams moved her family to Big Hill, where they lived and cared for their herds for many years, finally moving to Matagorda, of late years Mrs. Williams making her home with her daughter, Mrs. B. A. Ryman. Mrs. Williams was loved by all of a very large circle of friends, and the funeral cortege which followed the last remains to the cemetery was one of the largest ever seen in historic Matagorda. The grave was a veritable bank of beautiful flowers, silently and eloquently testifying to the affection of the entire community. To this pioneer couple were born twelve children, six of whom are living each with a large family, the surviving children being: James Frances Williams, John A. Williams, Mrs. Ann Elizabeth Baxter, Mrs. Jennie Ryman of Matagorda, and Billy Williams of Palacios. The deceased children are: Mrs. Wilhelmine Eidelbach, Mrs. Mollie Serrill, Miss Louisa Williams, Miss Sarah Etta Williams, Bud Williams, and Henry P. Williams. Her living grandchildren, forty-five in number, are: Mrs. Annie Lee, Mrs. Lou Ellis, Mrs. Minnie Bedford, Mrs. Bessie Baker, Mrs. Jennie McNabb, Mrs. Lida Moberley, Henry Baxter, Robert Baxter, Collins Baxter, C. P. Williams, W. E. Serrill, Miss Jessie May Serrill, Miss Muta C. Serrill, Douglas Serrill, Rugeley Serrill, Gober Serrill, Zuch Serrill, W. B. Serrill, James Nye Ryman, Carroll Ryman, Walter Williams, George Williams, Alvin Williams, Mrs. Mabel Walker, Mrs. Lida Gay Huddleston, Miss Lula Williams, Miss Myrtle Williams, Miss Winnie Williams. The great-grand-children number forty two and are: Geo.
