Miss Elizabeth Treichler

The funeral of Miss Elizabeth Treichler, who died at Colorado Springs, Colo. Friday night, as the result of an automobile accident, took place with religious ceremonies at her late home in Newgulf conducted by the Rt. Rev. Clinton B. Quin of Houston, with burial in the cemetery at Matagorda in the late afternoon.

Miss Treichler would have been eighteen years of age in December. She finished a term with Miss Hockaday’s School for girls in Dallas last year and entered at the beginning of this term the Colorado College at Colorado Springs. The deplorable accident which took her from home, friends and the duties of life, brought to a close a most promising young personality, took from us a vivacious, charming and ambitious girl just at the threshold of young womanhood and at the beginning of the sterner duties of a mature age.

Miss Treichler was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Treichler of Newgulf. Her father is the Texas manager of the Texas Gulf Sulphur Company who practically reared his interesting family at Gulf in this county. Miss Elizabeth therefore, was well known to a large circle here as well as at Newgulf. Her friends who are left to mourn her untimely demise and to mingle their tears and sorrow with the grief of a distracted and heart broken parents are many. Her death takes from them a friend, a companion and schoolmate.

The accident which causes us to regretfully chronicle this stupefying tragedy occurred on the highway between Colorado Springs and Denver. Miss Treichler and other students were on their way Friday night to Denver to attend a football game on Saturday. At a state intersection the car occupied by the students was side swiped by another. Miss Elizabeth’s was the only fatality, but others were injured.

The services this afternoon were conducted by the Reverend Quin who spoke impressively of the lovely and promising life of the young woman, salving the aching hearts of loved ones with words of sympathy and assuring the boundless grief with words of tenderness and prayer.

William George “Billie” Treichler
Drowning in Matagorda Bay

Matagorda is mourning with Gulf over the terrible tragedy that came into one of its homes Sunday afternoon, the drowning in the bay of the little six-year-old son, Billie, of Mr. and Mrs. [Herbert] Treichler, while they, with a party of friends were returning from a beach trip.

Various reports were given of his disappearance, yet really, no one saw him go overboard and he was not missed until he had entirely disappeared, exactly where not known.

Searching parties in boats and airplanes were out all Sunday night, Monday and Monday night and the body was recovered Tuesday morning.

The crushed and brokenhearted parents have the deepest heartfelt sympathy of the entire community.

Body of Boy Is Found
Victim of Sunday Tragedy In Matagorda Bay

The body of little Herbert Treichler, who fell from a pleasure boat into Matagorda Bay Sunday and was drowned, was found this morning.

This tragedy which marred a boating excursion’s pleasure Sunday is one of the most tragic and deplorable in the history of the county. A party of pleasure seekers were boating and Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Treichler had their children in the party. Upon returning to the shore, little Herbert, about seven years of age, was missing. A search was immediately started and was kept up continuously until the body was found this morning.

Every means of search was employed, even airplanes joining in while men and women lined the shores, but all to no purpose until this morning.

The devoted parents are heartbroken and the entire county is shocked over the unusual and heart-breaking tragedy.
