Smith, Mrs. J. Morgan (Winnie E.) Smith of 3324 Sunset Blvd., died Thursday in the home of her daughter. Native of Brazoria, had lived in Houston 17 years. Member St. Paul’s Methodist Church. Sadler class of the church. Survivors; Daughters, Mrs. W. L. Cronin, Mrs. James Knotts, both of Houston; son, Cyrus W. Smith, Bay City; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sisters, Mrs. Myra Daniesl, Houston, Mrs. Ruby Lide, Galveston. Services 1 p. m. Sunday, Settegast-Kopf chapel. Professor Spencer

Professor Spencer, 91, of Bay City died at the Matagorda House of the Matagorda General Hospital October 20. Survivors include: sons, Booker Spencer, Professor Spencer, Jr., John Spencer and Leon Fletcher; daughter, Mrs. Alta Spencer; sister, Mrs. Genova Matthews; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at the Mother Zion Baptist Church Saturday, October 25 at 2 p. m. with Rev. Samuel Tims officiating. Interment will follow at Matagorda Cemetery. Visitation hours will be Friday afternoon. Pallbearers are: Professor Spender Jr., John Spencer, B. T. Spencer, Robert G. Spencer, Lawrence T. Jones and Richard K. Jones. Honorary pallbearers are: David Spencer, Isaac Spencer and Enoch Casey. Penn Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Bill Stallings

Bill Stallings, 74, of Matagorda died July 7, 2002 at Gulf Coast Medical Center in Wharton.

He was born March 1, 1928 in Old Gulf, TX to the late Marvin M. and Margaret Adeline Miller Stallings. Mr. Stallings was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Matagorda, a resident of Matagorda the past three years and a former longtime resident of Palestine.

Survivors include: wife, Dolly Smith Stallings of Matagorda; two daughters-in-law, Frances Stallings of Houston and Celia and Tim Oden of Angleton; four grandchildren, Dustin Oden, Tricia Oden, Braden Linder and Stacey Neal. He was preceded in death by his six brothers, George, John, Jeff, Murray, Pete and Earl Stallings.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at Christ Episcopal Church in Matagorda with the Rev. Harley Savage officiating. Interment will follow at Matagorda Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Dustin Oden and Braden Linder; and his nephews, Dale W. Smith, Daniel A. Smith, Charles Allison and David Long.

Dolly Ann Stallings
August 10, 1931 - July 16, 2019

Dolly Ann Stallings, 87, of Angleton, TX passed away July 16, 2019. She was born August 10, 1931 in Palestine, TX to William and Ethel Smith.

Known as Dolly Ann to siblings and friends, Aunt Dottie to her many nieces and nephews, and Bama to her grand and great-grandchildren, she shared a love of fishing, travel, dogs named Mitzi, and humor (practical jokes were a specialty).

She enjoyed a successful career with Knox Glass as the plant controller, retired with her husband early in their 50’s and spent the next 10+ years fishing in Montana and South Padre Island finally settling together in Matagorda. They continued to surf fish and participate in local occasions until his passing in 2002. Dolly stayed in Matagorda and appreciated her many friendships even after her eventual move to Lake Jackson.

The special bond she shared with her lifetime girlfriends, the DDTs (Daring Daughters of the Town), lasted until her passing including reunions into their 80’s.

Dolly left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew her and will be remembered for her loyalty to family and friends and her deep love for animals.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or ASPCA.

Dolly is preceded in death by her parents; husband Billy Wayne Stallings, and daughter Frances Ann Stallings. She is survived by daughter Celia Oden (Timothy); grandchildren Stacey Moynahan (Kevin), Braden Linder, Tricia Groth (Garrett), and Dustin Oden (Kaysie), and great-grandchildren Reese Oden, Piper Park, Jake Oden, Lily Linder, Chael Linder, Emmett Moynahan, Grant Groth, Rawlin Linder, and Gianna Groth, two sisters-in-law Celia Smith and Inez Smith, and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends and relatives 4:00pm-6:00pm Sunday, July 21 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City. Services are 10:00am Monday July 22, 2019 at the Matagorda United Methodist Church with Reverend Maggie Young officiating. Interment will follow at Matagorda Cemetery. Pallbearers are Dustin Oden, Braden Linder, Timothy Oden, Danny Smith, Dale Wayne Smith and Charlie Allison.

J. H. Stallings Rites Are Held In Matagorda

Funeral services were held Sunday at Bay City Funeral Home for J. H. “Johnnie” Stallings, 45, of Matagorda, who died at his home Friday. He had been a Matagorda resident for 24 years and was a member of the Baptist church there.

Survivors include his widow Mrs. Mary Stallings; one daughter, Mary Jane Hamill of Duncanville; two sons, William Henry and John Marvin of Matagorda; mother, Mrs. Addie Margaret Stallings of George West, and three brothers, Bill of Palestine, Earl of Beaumont, and Jeff of Alice.

Rev. F. R. Weedon, minister of Bay City First Baptist Church, officiated at the rites and burial was in Matagorda Cemetery. Pallbearers were Gene Lawhon, Joe Smith, Clancy Baxter, Alfred Lee Cook, Lamar Holloman and Jimmy Yeamans.

Fred C. Stanley

Funeral services for Fred C. Stanley, 59, of Bay City will be held at 2 p. m. Wednesday, July 14, 1999, at First United Methodist Church in Bay City. Burial will be held at Matagorda Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home.

Mr. Stanley died Monday, July 12 at his home in Bay City after a long fight with cancer. He was born July 18, 1939 in Galveston to O. B. Stanley and the late Anna Beth Johnson Stanley. He was a lifelong resident of Bay City and an active member of the community. After receiving his business degree from Texas Christian University, he became president of Stanley Stores from 1962 until his death.

He served on numerous boards of directors of grocery and banking related businesses. He was elected to the Bay City School Board and was a two-time president of the Bay City Lions Club. He was a member of Phi-Kappa Sigma Fraternity and First United Methodist Church. He was a wonderful husband and devoted father and grandfather. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

Mr. Stanley is survived by Linda Archer Stanley, his wife of 14 years; father O. B. Stanley; brother, Steven both of Bay City; son Bart Stanley and wife Linda of El Campo; daughter Susan Stanley Faciane and husband Kevin of Ft. Worth; two step sons, Shane Ganske and wife Vikki of Webster and Ty Ganske and wife Rhonda of Austin; and grandchildren, Samantha, Sommer, and Sawyer Stanley and Kristin and Courtney Faciane. He was preceded in death by his other Anna Beth Stanley and his first wife, Pamela Stanley.

Pallbearers will be Charles Allison, Bill Barton, Jim LeFebvre, Sam Maglitto, Gary Trippie, and Greg Westmoreland.

Honorary pallbearers will be Tommy Fields, Bruce Grover, E. M. Huitt and Danny Janecka.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests those desiring memorial contributions make them to the American Cancer Society, the Juvenile Diabetes Association, or the Bay City Public Library.

Arrangements are with Taylor Bros. Funeral Home.

J. C. Stanley

J. C. Stanley, 80, of Bay City died at his residence October 8, 2003. He was born August 8, 1923 in McGregory, Texas to the late Joseph Carlton and Pearl Inez Wicker Stanley. Mr. Stanley was a resident of Bay City since 1980, and he served in the US Marines during WW II.

Survivors include: his wife of 58 years Sarah McDougal Stanley of Bay City; daughter and son-in-law: Nikki and J. R. Goetz of Arlington, Texas; two sons and daughters-in-law: Rikki and Peggy Stanley of Matagorda, and Dikki and Tutie Stanley of Bowling Green, Kentucky; brother: O. B. Stanley of Bay City; nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Pauline Cameron and his brothers, Thorning and Scotty Stanley.

Graveside funeral service was held at 4 p.m. Friday, October 10, 2003, at the Matagorda Cemetery with the Rev. Harley Savage officiating. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements were with Taylor Bros. Funeral Home.

Mrs. M. Stanley

Mrs. Myrtle Stanley of Wadsworth passed away in the Rugeley-Blasingame Hospital in Wharton Sunday night.

Funeral services were set for 4 p. m. today at the Baptist Church in Wadsworth with the Rev. R. E. Black officiating.

Survivors include her husband, Willie Stanley; four children, Sammy Ray, Billy Mack, Hilda Kay and Sara Mae, all of Wadsworth; four sisters, Mrs. Lillian Franklin, Wadsworth; Mrs. Foy Thames, Fort Worth; Mrs. Georgia Nell Durham, Paris, and Mrs. Saberia Cox, Houston; two brothers, Lee H. Monroe of Dallas; her mother, Mrs. Vollie Monroe of Bogata and her father, W. E. Monroe of Texas City. Interment will be in the Matagorda Cemetery with the Chambers Funeral Home of Wharton in charge.
