Matagorda, Texas, June 19.—Mrs. Sallie Smith, wife of Mr. Gus Smith of this city, died at the family residence Saturday morning from heart trouble from which malady she has suffered for twenty years, yet even so her death was wholly unexpected , and the shock has prostrated the members of the family. To make their bereavement doubly sad, a son, Jacob Smith, just a short time ago, left for Mare Island, Calif., to enter the United States naval service and the sad tidings without previous warning will cause him great grief, yet he is only one of the many now serving the colors, who will receive that deplorable message before the war is over. Mrs. Smith led a very retired life and was a gentlewoman of the old school and was beloved by her relatives and friends because of that knowledge that she was a good woman. Her favorite church was the Presbyterian and Rev. Granville Storey of Bay City officiated at the funeral services in the home, concluding them at the cemetery at 5 o’clock Saturday afternoon. The bereft ones are her husband, two daughter, and three sons—Mrs. Steve Phillips, Miss Belle Smith, Messrs. Lee Walker, Jacob and Guy Smith—all of Matagorda. They have the heartfelt sympathy of their friends as was evidenced by the large cortege following the remains of their lasting resting place. Daily Tribune?, July 20, 1918
