Janice Elaine Serrill, 68, a resident of Aransas Pass, Texas
since 1965, passed away Tuesday, January 23, 2001 at a local
hospital. She was born October 25, 1932 in New Gulf, Texas to
Henry and Helen Landrum. She loved the outdoors and hunted arrow
heads for a hobby. She is survived by her husband of 48 years,
Gardner Serrill of Aransas Pass and several nieces, nephews, and
cousins.
Philip Gardner Serrill Philip Gardner Serrill, passed away peacefully at his home in Aransas Pass, Texas on October 29, 2017 at the age of 92 years old. He was truly a self-made man. He was eccentric but scrupulously honest, generous in many different areas of life, and a faithful friend. He didn’t believe in loaning money, but gave over and over to many in need. Gardner was born May 8, 1925, in Bay City, Texas, and was the youngest of three boys. Gardner graduated from Bay City High School and, to repeat his words, “Barely made it out!” Therefore, it is most remarkable that he became the most successful of the three brothers, especially with the two older having both attended college. Due to a disability, Gardner could not join the military during WWII, so he worked at Old Ocean Oil Refinery through the war’s end, as well as various other jobs over his early working years. Before finding his life’s career in shrimping, he towed barges on the Colorado and San Bernard Rivers, was a member of the Matagorda Volunteer Fire Department, and donated land to the Matagorda Cemetery, where he was instrumental in building of a beautiful gazebo. He was one of the founders of the Shrimp Co-Op in Aransas Pass. Gardner started working in the shrimping industry in Matagorda, where he met and married Janice Landrum. There they built a home and continued living there until the shrimping industry moved to Aransas Pass. They followed soon after, at which time Gardner started building his own boats. Janice worked on the boat along-side her husband, and the shrimping industry became their life. The ultimately owned their own fleet of boats. That became their lifelong passion and ambition. They did very well indeed. Gardner is survived by his nephews, Stephen Wiltshire (Veronica) Serrill, and John Barber Serrill; nieces, Kathryn Blaine (Ken) Taylor of Fort Myers, Florida; Susan Oakford (David) Lowe of Indio, California, and Judith Ann Drake of Richmond, Virginia. He is preceded in death by his parents, George Edward and Minnie Barber Serrill; brothers, George Edward Serrill Jr. and Jay Oakford Serrill; and niece, Elizabeth Serrill of Fort Myers, Florida. Although Gardner had many, many friends, there are two men that must be specifically acknowledged: George Hydrick of Utopia, and James Barcak of Aransas Pass. These two gentlemen, along with their lovely wives, were true and faithful friends for many years. They cared for Gardner late in his life after Janice died, and remained his trusted friends, loyal and close to the very sad end. They were exhaustive in their attentiveness and care of their longtime friend. The family is forever grateful for their love and all they did over many years. The family would like to give a special thanks to the nurses and staff at Nurses on Wheels and Anthem caregivers. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to South Texas Lighthouse for the Blind. Visitation will be held Thursday, November 2, 2017 from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. with the family being present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. A graveside service will be held Friday, November 3, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Matagorda Cemetery in Matagorda, Texas. Online Condolences may be left at www.charliemarshallfuneralhomes.com Arrangements entrusted to Charlie Marshall Funeral Homes and Crematory, Inc., 2003 W. Wheeler Ave., Aransas Pass, Texas 78336, 361-758-3221.

John Gordon Serrill died suddenly Monday night about ten o’clock at Bay City of heart trouble, aged 31 years. Mr. Serrill had for a year or more been a sufferer from an affection of the heart, severe pains often being almost unbearable. Doctors disagreed as to the cause, one believing a rib was pressing against the heart, while others thought the pain was caused by rheumatism of neuralgia. Monday night Mr. Serrill was sitting in a pool hall, and a friend noticing that he was in an unusual position touched him and found that he was in a semi-conscious condition. He was conveyed to the house of his sister, Mrs. Geo. Austin, where in a short while the soul of John Gordon Serrill peacefully passed into the Great Beyond. The deceased was a native of the town of Matagorda, his parents having moved here in the early days of Texas, his father from Pennsylvania and his mother direct from Germany. Surviving him are two brothers, J. P. Serrill and Capt. H. H. Serrill, Deputy State Fish and Oyster Commissioner, and one sister, Mrs. Geo. Austin of Bay City. The deceased has resided all his life in Matagorda up to about ten years ago, since which time he has lived in Bay City. At both places he had many friends, and following an impressive funeral service at the Episcopal Church conducted by the Rector, Rev. Dr. John Sloan of Bay City, the last remains were followed to the cemetery here by a large number of friends. Those forming the funeral escort from Bay City were Mr. J. S. Mayfield, Miss Zalie Austin, Geo. E. Serrill and wife, Wm. E. Austin, S. S. Moore, O. E. Hatcher, Jas. H. Selkirk, Chas. F. Baker, Judge W. S. Helmuth, T. J. Poole, Frank? Harkless, J. D. Hawkins, J. D. Moore, V. Doubek, J. H. Carrington and wife, Wm. Conger, Wm. Walker and J. M. Moore.

Julius Pratt Serrill, age 85, lovingly called “Uncle Dick” by his many friends, expired at the Gulf Hospital Tuesday afternoon at 6:40 o’clock after several days of illness. Funeral services were held this afternoon at three o’clock from Christ Church, Matagorda, with Rev. Paul E. Engle officiating. Pallbearers were: P?. J. Wilkins, Harris Milner and Frank Baker of Bay City; W. E. McNabb, Willie Williams and Ed Watkins of Matagorda. “Uncle Dick” was born in Indianola, Texas, February 21, 1851. He resided in Matagorda for many years, moving to Bay City in 1916. He was the brother of the late Mrs. Geo. Austin of this city, and Henry Serrill of Matagorda. He had never been married. The Tribune joins the many friends in extending sympathy to the following who are left to mourn: one brother, H. H. Serrill, of Matagorda; six nieces, Mrs. E. H. Highley and Mrs. V. H. Doubek of Bay City, Mrs. Geo. Posey of Houston, Mrs. Max Shill of Dallas, Miss Muta Serrill of Newgulf, and Mrs. Jim Moberley of Matagorda; six nephews, George Serrill of Bay City, W. B. Rugeley and Douglas Serrill of Matagorda, Z. Serrill of Newgulf, and G. Serrill of Mississippi. Daily Tribune, February 3, 1937 In Memory of J. P. Serrill In the passing of Julius Pratt Serrill Feb. 2, another Matagorda county landmark has “gone out with the tide.” How few are left here now of his long ago companions of his youth and manhood of his early days. He has gone the way of all the earth and there is a land of precious promises where “God’s children are gathering home.” Although Julius Serrill moved to Bay City to his sister’s, Mrs. George Austin, he never missed an opportunity to come back to his old stomping ground—Matagorda—where he always found a warm welcome awaiting him. Although born in old Indianola, the greater part of his life was spent here and now that he is gone he will be missed by all who knew him. He had not been in good health for some time and he came back to his old home to spend his last days. Rev. Paul Engle read the funeral rites at the Episcopal Church and concluded them at the cemetery, where the casket was place hear that of his mother and other members of the family who had gone on. There was a large cortege from Bay City, Houston, Newgulf, Matagorda and other towns that wound its way to the family yard. The grave was beautiful in the floral contributions that manifested the love of relatives and the esteem of friends of this old Matagorda citizen.
