Margaret Pickel

Graveside services for Margaret Pickel, 84, of Bay City, are scheduled for 2 p. m. today in Matagorda Cemetery with the Rev. Bill Haskell officiating.

Mrs. Pickel was born Dec. 2, 1909, in Matagorda to Phillip and Pauline Bunk Yeamans and died Jan. 8, 1994, in Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City.

She was a member of the Methodist church.

Survivors include two sisters, Tessie Duderstadt of Bay City and Mollie Belle Miller of Wharton; five nephews, Joe Yeamans of Bay City, Jimmy Yeamans of Matagorda, Asa Yeamans of Alvin, Doug and Neil Yeamans of Aransas Pass; eight nieces, Joe Faye Deshotels, Alyne Cox, Phyllis Culver and Jeanine Baxter, all of Matagorda, Anne Wofford and Virginia McVey, both of Boling, Patsy Wright of San Carlos, Calif., and Nellie Woods of Bay City; numerous great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Una Tine Pickel on March 5, 1984.

Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home.

Una Tine Pickel

Services for Mr. Una Tine Pickel, 92, of Zapata, Texas, have been scheduled for 2 p. m. Friday at Taylor Brothers Funeral home Chapel, with the Rev. W. A. Haskell officiating. Interment will be at Matagorda Cemetery.

Mr. Pickel, who died March 5, 1984, at Doctors Hospital in Laredo, was born October 13, 1891, in Palestine, Texas. A retired civil service aircraft electrician, Mr. Pickel resided in Zapata for the past 15 years. He was a veteran of World War I, a 50-year member of Masonic Lodge No. 7 A. F. & A. M. of Matagorda, a member of Scottish Rite Temple in Galveston, commander of World War I Barrack No. 3302 of Zapata and a member of American Legion Post No. 486, also in Zapata. Mr. Pickel was also a member of the Methodist church.

He is survived by: his wife, Margaret Yeamans Pickel of Zapata; three daughters, Phyllis Sewell and Shirley Pickel of Bay City and Verna Del Barker of Corpus Christi; two sisters, Lois Pickel of Bay City and Elva White of Long Beach, Calif.; two brothers, Paul Pickel of Baytown and Hugh Pickel of Los Angeles; three grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Taylor Brothers Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Ada Pope Suicided At Matagorda Sunday

Matagorda, Texas, June 14.—Despondent over ill health, Mrs. Ada Pope, wife of Charles W. Pope took her own life at 2 o’clock p. m., yesterday by shooting herself in the head with a pistol. The sad tragedy came as a shock to all and this community is wrapped in deep sorrow, as the hearts of her many friends go out in sympathy to the bereft husband and little eleven-year-old daughter.

Mrs. Pope had been in wretched health for several years ad it is thought that in a moment of despair she ended her sufferings.

The remains will be interred in the Matagorda Cemetery this afternoon at 4 o’clock.

Carl William Pope

Carl [Charles] William Pope whom all his friends called “Charlie,” died at the home  of his daughter in Huntsville Tuesday from an apoplectic stroke and was laid to rest here Wednesday afternoon in the Matagorda cemetery by the side of his wife who preceded him to the grave about twenty years ago.

The was a large funeral procession of old friends throughout this, his native county, and his few remaining relatives, his daughter, Mrs. McMeans her husband, Dr. R. E. McMeans and their two sons, Garland and Elston McMeans of Huntsville. Mr. Pope was one of three sons of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Pope, Sr., all deceased now. He was born in Matagorda, Aug. 3, 1870. All of his life was spent here until after his wife’s passing, then after a while he made Clemville his home. He was on a visit to his daughter, her husband and sons, when the end came. He has always been a devout Episcopalian and was buried from Christ’s Church here where he was baptized and confirmed. Rev. Paul Engle performing the obsequies. He has gone the way of all the earth and the heart-felt sympathy of friends go out to his bereft daughter in her sorrow.

Thomas O. Pulley & Lottie L. Pulley

Lottie L. Pulley

Lottie L. Pulley, age 80, of Matagorda passed away Oct. 19 at her residence.

Funeral services will be held at 12 noon, Oct. 22 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Chapel with Rev. C. J. Molmen officiating. Burial will follow at the Matagorda Cemetery in Matagorda.

Pulley was born Aug. 22, 1917 in Kerens, Texas, to Willie and Beula Wigley Reed. She was a former resident of Houston and had lived in Matagorda since 1982. She married Thomas Oran Pulley in Trinidad, Texas on Oct. 7, 1939.

She is survived by her husband, Thomas Oran Pulley of Matagorda; by a daughter Glenda Clare of Tampa, Florida; by three sisters, Leona Lewis of Malakoff, Texas, Gelene Stockton of Abilene, Texas and Gerry Boyd of Palestine, Texas;  by two grandchildren, Keith and Kristin Curington both of Tampa, Florida.

Thomas O. Pulley

Funeral services for Thomas O. Pulley, 78, of Matagorda will be at 10:30 a. m. on Feb. 28 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Chapel with Rev. C. J. Molmen officiating. Burial will follow in the Matagorda Cemetery in Matagorda.

Mr. Pulley passed away Feb. 25 at Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City. He was born May 19, 1919 in Trinidad to William Franklin and Martha JoAnn Carden Pulley. He was a resident of Matagorda since 1982, after being a resident of Houston. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the VFW Post 2438.

He is survived by one daughter, Glenda Care of Tampa; two grandchildren, Keith and Kristi Curington of Tampa; and one great grandchild, Zachary Thomas Curington of Tampa.

Pallbearers include Rich Mayhew, Joe Lowery, Virley Sherrill, James Powledge, and David Allen. Honorary pallbearers include Medal of Honor Recipients, Raymond E. Ray, Clarence Sasser and Roy Benavidez.

Arrangements are with Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City.
