All of Matagorda was rather shocked over the sudden death of Mrs. Lela Nini, who passed away at the Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City at 8:30 Sunday morning. Saturday night she had gone to the Beach Tavern with her daughter, sister, and brother-in-law for a few hours of dancing. They hadn’t been there but a short time when she was suddenly taken ill. They brought her on home but she continued to get worse and was taken to the hospital where she passed away the next morning. Mrs. Nini was born in Matagorda 54 years ago as Lela Baxter; later as a young lady she met and married Eddie Nini and had two children by that marriage. In the years she became well-loved by friends and neighbors alike. Surviving are her son, Wallace; daughter, Miss Addie Lee Nini; mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Baxter; sister, Mrs. Thomas Nini (who married the brother of Eddie); brothers, Billy of Wadsworth and I. C. of Matagorda. Services were held at the Methodist Church with Rev. Adrian officiating. Matagorda County Tribune, January 19, 1950

With the passing of Mr. Charles Nolte, who died at his home in Matagorda, Texas, Wednesday, December 7, 1927 at __ p. m. at the age of 79 years, our…one of its valued citizens and splendid neighbors. An honest man’s the noblest work of God and Charley Nolte was consistently honest in all his dealings with strangers and friends alike. Mr. Nolte was born in Germany April 16, 1848. He came to America with his parents, Joseph F. and Christiana Nolte in 1854 at the age of six years. He had one brother, Joseph, and three sisters, Mrs. Helen Pope, Mrs. Caroline Dietrich, Mrs. Bettie Funk. These are all dead. He has lived in Matagorda 73 years. He was married to Hannah Elizabeth Sterry, May 8, 1873. There were born to them eight children, two dead. The living are: Mrs. Mabel Bailey, San Antonio; Mrs. Carrie Dietrich, Matagorda; Mrs. J. A. Bruce, Bay City; Mrs. Frank Duffy, Matagorda; Mr. Albert Nolte, Matagorda; Mrs. E. M. Blair, Gulf. He also left ten grandchildren. Besides this large family, Mr. and Mrs. Nolte took into their home, at the age of 4 years, their nephew, Martin J. Funk, now of San Marcos, Texas, and reared him to manhood. His house has also been a home for his niece, Miss Bertha Funk, who is well known in the county, having taught school in Matagorda many years. Mr. Nolte has been sick since last May. He has been ended lovingly by his son ad daughters, together with his faithful wife, who mourns his loss. Let us pause, in reverent respect and…one by one, these worthy pioneers of our country pass out of this life. Daily Tribune, December 20, 1927

It is sad, indeed, to have to chronicle the death of Mrs. Hannah Elizabeth Nolte, who passed out of this life December 20th, 1927, at her home in Matagorda, Texas. Mrs. Nolte was born in Matagorda October 9, 1854, and has lived here all her life. She was married to Chas. Nolte on May 6, 1873. They have lived continually in Matagorda for fifty-four years, so it seems in a way, fitting and right that she should so soon follow him to the Great Beyond. (Mr. Nolte’s death occurring December 7, 1927.) Mrs. Nolte was the mother of eight children, two dead. The living who mourn her loss and who are specially bereft in losing both parents in so short a time are: Mrs. Mabel George, Mrs. Carrie Dietrich, Mrs. J. A. Bruce, Mrs. Frank Duffy, Mr. Albert Nolte and Mrs. L. M. Blair. Mrs. Nolte was a member of the Episcopal church. She was loved by all who knew her. She was a devoted wife and mother, a good friend and neighbor; generous and unselfish, rejoicing whenever it came her way to do a kind deed. She will be sadly missed by those who knew her best. May she rest in peace. --A Friend.
