The hearts of a multitude of men and women were saddened at noon on Saturday, February 1, 1936, when it was learned that Mr. R. C. Jones, of Gulf, Texas, had passed away at the Gulf Hospital where he had been ill for only two days. Reuben Clark Jones was born in Missouri in 1869 and came to Texas when only nine years of age. At the time of his death he was sixty-six years, eleven months and twenty-nine days old. Mr. Jones was married early in life, and to this union four children, all of whom survive, where born: L. E. Jones, of Houston; Joe Jones, of Humble, Rollie C. Jones, of California; and Mrs. H. C. Duke, of Louisiana. On February 6, 1921, Mr. Jones was married to Mrs. Mattie Cooper in Gulf, Texas, where they continued to make their home until his death. The funeral services, conducted at the home on Monday, February 3, at three o’clock by members of the Odd Fellows Lodge and by Rev. Duff, were simple but impressive. Two beautiful songs, “Abide With Me” and “When We Get to the End of the Way,” were rendered by the choir. Miss Annie Laurie Pearce, accompanied by Miss Margaret Pratt at the piano, then sang “Sometime We’ll Understand.” The message by Rev. Duff was one of inspiration and comfort to the family and friends. Interment took place in Matagorda Cemetery. The active pallbearers were: W. O. Cooper, T. M. Thompson, F. M. Sutton, J. M. Smith, E. P. Lyton, and James Tabb. Truly a fine, good man has passed from the earth. Mr. Jones was kind, sympathetic and charitable to a fault. When help was needed he was ready to give of both his time and means and never failed to lend a helping hand to a fellow man in distress. Having met and overcome many obstacles and trials in his own life, he seemed to know just how much even a smile and a good word meant. To be a faithful, devoted father and husband, an honest, loyal citizen, and an industrious worker as was Mr. Jones is to be a success in life. What more need be said of any person than “He was a good man.” The high esteem in which Mr. Jones was held by his relatives and friends was manifest by the great number of those present at the funeral and by the beautiful floral offerings. Our sincere sympathy goes to the widow, Mrs. Mattie Jones, and to her son, Mr. John Cooper, and to other members of the family in their great loss. Daily Tribune, February 13, 1936
