Services For Mrs. Bertha D. Inglehart

Mrs. Bertha D. Inglehart, well-known Matagorda pioneer, died Sunday, January 31, 1960 in El Campo.

Funeral services were held at the Christ Episcopal Church in Matagorda at 4 p. m. Monday, February 1^st. The Rev. Ralph Masers officiated with burial in the Matagorda Cemetery under the direction of Taylor Brothers Funeral Home of Bay City.

Born in Matagorda County December 1, 1873, Mrs. Inglehart has been a life long resident of Matagorda. She was a member of the Episcopal Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. A. E. Thrasher of Newgulf, and Mrs. D. D. Locke, Freeport; one son, L. C. Inglehart of San Antonio; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and ne Great Great Grandchild.

Pallbearers were C. P. Williams, Coleman Stansell, Gene Lawhon, Davant Sterry and Malcolm Carmichael.

Catherine Civil Inglehart

Matagorda, Texas, June 16.—Mrs. Catherine Civil Inglehart, a life long resident of Matagorda, with the exception of 14 years of her early married life in Brenham, departed this life at 6 o’clock a. m. June 2, 1924, at her residence in this city, after a brief illness, at the age of 74 years, 6 months and 10 days, all her children being at her bedside when she passed away just as she had lived—quietly and beautifully.

Mrs. Inglehart was a descendant of old English aristocracy, her father, James Henry Selkirk, coming direct from England and Mrs. Lucy Hall Selkirk of English descent, whose native state was New York.

Mrs. Inglehart’s parents were married in New York State and came to Matagorda with one of the Austin colonies and she, as well as the rest of their children, was born and reared here.

On Christmas Eve, 1867, Miss Catherine Civil Selkirk was united in marriage to Mr. E. J. Inglehart of which union there were eleven children of whom eight survive: Mrs. Will Arnold and Mrs. R. A. Kleska of Bay City, J. H. Inglehart of Brenham, Alvin Inglehart of Somerville, J. T., A. H. and E. R. Inglehart and Mrs. J. O. Taylor of Matagorda. Also there are 19 grandchildren. Owing partly to an illness about two months previous to her death, Mrs. Inglehart completely lost her eyesight, which, no doubt, hurried her demise as she had always led such an active, busy life and now she could only fold her hands and wait, groping in darkness as it were, yet with that Christian fortitude that had sustained her all down the vista of years she suffered the inevitable quietly, bravely and uncomplainingly, her children seemingly grieving over the outcome more than she.

Her death came as a shock to them and it will be many years, if ever, ere they become reconciled to their living without her.

She was one of Nature’s gentlewomen of the old school, living her daily life quietly and unobtrusively, striving to do well in all things. She has always been a consistent and devout member of the Episcopal faith only failing to attend services when providentially hindered. Thus through Christian influence she reared her sons and daughters and none of them will ever depart very far from the Christian sentiments which have been so faithfully instilled in them by a superior and devoted mother of wonderful home influence, which is a monument that can not easily be destroyed.

The funeral services were conducted at 4 o’clock p. m. the following day of her death, at Christ’s Episcopal Church. Rev. Mr. Lake of Wharton officiating.

Many lovely floral offerings covered the casket and the chancel, which were later banked on the newmade mound and on the tomb of her husband who preceded her to the grave 13 years ago.

Not only her children but all of Matagorda will miss this dear woman as we so sadly miss all the “landmarks” that are disappearing, oh, so fast! May a wise heavenly Father comfort the bereft ones.

J. H. Inglehart Rites Set Today

Jesse H. Inglehart, 89, of Matagorda, died Saturday noon in Matagorda General Hospital following an extended illness.

A 60 year resident of Matagorda, he was a retired depot agent for the Santa Fe railroad and a life-long member of Christ Episcopal Church in Matagorda.

Funeral services will be Monday at 3:00 p. m. in Christ Episcopal Church in Matagorda with the Rev. Dr. Das. Kelley Barnett officiating.

Burial followed in the Matagorda cemetery under the direction of the Bay City Funeral Home.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Eleanor Inglehart Moore; sister, Mrs. Imogene Taylor, both of Matagorda; two brothers, J. T. Inglehart of El Campo and A. E. Inglehart of Navasota and a number of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers are J. E. Taylor, J. K. Inglehart, A. E. Inglehart, C. P. Williams, J. F. Williams, J. P. Williams.
