(January 8, 1925 - January 30, 2007)

Iris Belva Gaconnet, 82, of Matagorda passed away January 30, 2007. She was born January 8, 1925 in Kennedy, Texas to Clarence and Eula Mae Smoot Holland. She was a longtime resident of Matagorda.

Survivors include five daughters Iris Hardesty & Yvonne Meyers both of Bay City, Theresia Brown & Dixie Mitchell both of Jacksonville, AL and Jessica Stolte of Palmara, MO; three sons Terry Gaconnet of Sweeny, Randi Gaconnet of Bay City and Richard Scheirer of Banner, AR; two sisters Wanda Jones of Banner, AR & Millie Miller of Little Rock, AR; brother Marvin Holland of Little Rock, AR; fifteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Friday, February 2, 2007 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Chapel with Rev. Steve Bass officiating. Interment will follow at Matagorda Cemetery. Arrangements with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home in Bay City. 979-245-4613.

Double Funeral

Mrs. Gregoria Castillo and Miss Dora Garcia, both of Gulf, were buried at Matagorda Monday afternoon under the direction of the Duffy Undertaking Company of Matagorda, assisted by the Walker-Matchett Company, of this city.

Mrs. Castillo’s death followed an illness of some length. Miss Garcia, age 21, died a victim of tuberculosis.

The floral offerings were beautiful and many and the ceremonies were attended by a large number of friends and acquaintances.

The parents, brothers and sisters of Miss Garcia request the Tribune to extend their sincerest thanks to all those who administered to them during the illness and for their words of sympathy. Also, they are grateful for the floral offerings.

Gene Gartica

Funeral services for Gene Gartica, 56, of Matagorda will be held 2 p. m. Saturday at the Community Baptist Church in Matagorda with the Rev. Isaiah Gartica officiating. Burial will follow at Matagorda Cemetery in Matagorda.

A wake will be held from 7 to 9 p. m. today in the Green’s Mortuary chapel.

Mr. Gartica was born Feb. 14, 1935, to Leno and Roxie Ware Gartica in Texas and died Jan. 10, 1992, at Matagorda General Hospital.

He was affiliated with the Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Maggie Gartica of Matagorda; four sons, Harvey Gartica of Florida, Jeffery Dewayne Gartica, Raymond Ray Gartica and Darrell Wayne Gartica, all of Matagorda; five daughters, Debra Gartica of Austin, Shirley Gartica Austin of Bay City, Andrea Lanett Gartica and Caleda Faye Gartica of Matagorda and Norma Jean Powell of Cedar Lane; his father, Leno Gartica of Bay City, seven sisters, Roxie Marion Chenior, Hollis Word, Sophronia Burrell and Ernestine Perkins, all of Houston; Audrey Boultin of Bay City, Loraine Calyan of Los Angeles, Calif. and Amy Garcia of Wharton; three brothers, Andrew Gartica of Sylmar, Calif., and Isaiah Gartica and Manuel Gartica, both of Bay City; and eight grandchildren, Derek Jarrod Gartica, Roxie LaNora Gartica, Brodrich Se’Dale Gartica, Nicole Shardae Harris, Cedric Taylor Brown, Hadrain Gene Gartica, Bianca Patricia Gatica and Shawn Franklin; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers are Tony Fenoglio, Mike Daughtly, Johnnie Johnican, Arthur Ray Burnell, Byron Keith Gartica, David Spence, Marion Word Jr. and Henry Woods Jr.

Funeral services for Jeffery Gartica, 44, of Matagorda will be Saturday, August 23, 2003 at 11 a.m. at Community Baptist Church in Matagorda, Texas with the Rev. Isiah Gartica officiating. Burial will follow at Matagorda Cemetery in Matagorda, Texas.

Green’s Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.

Leno Gartica

Funeral services for Leno Gartica, 92, of Bay City are scheduled for 1 p. m. Monday at Community Baptist Church in Matagorda with Rev. J. R. Mack officiating. Burial is scheduled to be at the Matagorda Cemetery in Matagorda. Visitation will be Sunday until 9 p. m. at the Funeral Home Chapel located at 1300 Duncan St. in Bay City.

Mr. Gartica was born Oct. 23, 1899 in Rockport to the late Antonio and Simona Gartica and he died Aug. 19, 1992 at Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City.

He was a Catholic and a resident of Bay City.

Survivors include seven daughters and three sons-in-law, Roxie Marion Chenier, Hollis and Morgan Word, Sophronia Burrell and Ernestine Perkins, all of Houston, Loraine and James Calyen of Los Angeles, Calif., Audrey and C. D. Bouldin of Bay City, and Amey Gartica of Wharton; three sons and daughters-in-law, Andrew and Albertha Gartica of Sylmar, Calif., Rev. Isaiah and Jerry Gartica and Manuel and Patricia Gartica of Bay City; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Paula Riva, Bessie and Lencho Dias, and Minga and Jose Solis, all of Palacios; three brothers, Leon Gartica, Mascimo Gartica and Herman Gartica, all of Palacios; one sister-in-law, Annie Hawes of Galveston; one brother-in-law, Lafe Green of Galveston; 54 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; and a host of great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers will be Byron Gartica, Donnie Gartica, Ray Burrell, Charles Spencer, David Spencer, Timothy Young, Nathaniel Young and Michael Young. Mr. Gartica was preceded in death by his wife, Roxie Ware Gartica; two daughters, Ramona Gartica and Gladys Gartica Young; and three sons, Wallace Gartica, Leonard Gartica and Gene Gartica.

Arrangements are with Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home in Bay City.

Funeral Services for Maggie W. Gartica, 58, resident of Matagorda, will be held Saturday, September 9, 1995, at 11:00 A. M. at Community Baptist Church in Matagorda, Rev. Isaiah Gartica officiating. Maggie was born to Sally and Beno Woods Sept. 5, 1936 in Columbus and passed away Sept. 2, 1995 at Bay Villa Nursing Home.

Survivors include five daughters, and a son-in-law, Andrea Lanett and Caleda Faye Gartica of Matagorda, Debra Ann Gartica of Austin, Shirley and Johnnie Johnican of Bay City, and Norman Jean Powell of Cedar Lane; four sons and one daughter-in-law, Harvey and Sue Gartica of Counce, Tenn. Albert Joseph Gaston, 75, of Matagorda, died at his home Jan. 24, 1976. He was born June 29, 1900 in Matguett, La. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Albert Gaston of Matagorda; one daughter, Miss Sarah Gaston of Freeport; two sons, Albert of Houston and George of Freeport; four sisters, Leah and Zelma Rhodes and Emily Wiley and Ezel Perron all of Homer, La. and one brother, Israel Gaston of Homer, La. Services are pending with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home.

Joe Gavender Dies Here Early Today

Mr. Joe Gavender of Wadsworth died at the Matagorda General Hospital here this morning at 12:45. Mr. Gavender, who was 88 years of age, had been a resident of Wadsworth for many years.

He is survived by one brother, Alex Gavender also of Wadsworth and a number of nephews and nieces.

Rosary will be said this evening at 8 o’clock at the Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. Funeral services will be from the Wadsworth Catholic Church Saturday at 10 o’clock in the morning with Rev. C. J. Martin officiating.

Interment will be in the Matagorda Cemetery under the direction of Taylor Bros. Funeral Home.
