(April 25, 1937 - September 12, 2013)

J. B. Davenport, 76, of Matagorda went to be with The Lord on Thursday, September 12, 2013. He was born April 25, 1937 in Rosebud, TX to the late Hugh & Bess Vickers Davenport. J. B. was an avid fisherman who loved to spend time on the water with his family and friends. He spent about 25 years in the oil & gas industry as a Petroleum Engineer. After retiring, he went into the Real Estate Business. J. B. love for his family to spend time at his home in Matagorda on the Colorado River. J. B. is survived by his wife: Glenda Davenport; 2 daughters: Cindy Janca & husband James and Jill Russell & husband Jeremy; son: Mike Davenport & wife Pam; 4 grandchildren: Taylor Janca & wife Jaquelyn, Chandler Janca, Payne Davenport, Clayton Davenport; and great grandson: Jenner Janca. The Family will receive visitors from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Saturday, September 14, 2013 at the funeral home. The funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, September 15, 2013 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City, TX. Interment will follow at Matagorda Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Taylor Janca, Chandler Janca, Payne Davenport, Clayton Davenport, James Janca, and Mike Davenport. The family would like to thank AMED Hospice for their care and support during J. B.’s final days.

Glenda Burns Davenport
March 4, 1939 – January 27, 2014

Glenda Burns Davenport, 74, of Matagorda passed away January 27, 2014.

She was born March 4, 1939 in Cuero, TX, to the late Leo and Jane Ballard Burns.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J. B. Davenport; and grandchildren, Rachel Renee Ford and Robert James Ashby.

Survivors include her daughters, Connie Carter and Mike, Betty Cloud and Benny and Rhonda Hale and Gary; son, Doug Seifert and Daryl Ewing; grandchildren, Chase Carter, Jana Townzen and Nick, Jessica Fry and Robert; great-grandchildren, Victoria Black, Jake Townzen, and Babygirl Fry, on the way; and brother, Butch Burns and his children.

She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her life was consumed with being a part of each of their lives and making wonderful memories. Her other passion was the Matagorda County Women’s Crisis Center. She gave 25 years of dedication to this organization, starting as a volunteer and retiring as their Director.

The family will receive friends and relatives from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., Wednesday, January 29, 2014, at the funeral home.

The Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, January 30, 2014, at Taylor Bros. Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Pauline Harvey-Storey officiating.

Interment will follow at Matagorda Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Mike Carter, Benny Cloud, Chase Carter, Nick Townzen, Robert Fry and Joel Ashby.

Joyce Eugene Davis

Graveside funeral services for Joyce Eugene Davis, 61, of Matagorda will be at 2 p. m. Tuesday, March 17 at the Matagorda Cemetery with Rev. Southall officiating. Burial will follow.

Mr. Davis died Friday, March 13 at his residence in Matagorda. He was born February 15, 1937 in Combine, Texas to Roland and Lois Peeks Davis.

He is survived by his mother and step-father, Lois and W. G Basey of Bay City; brothers, Jimmy Davis of Van Vleck, Joe Davis of Bay City, Jeff Davis of Port Lavaca, and Jarvis Davis of Selkirk; sisters, Jenice Shields of Bay City and Joy Losack of Richwood; and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are with Bay City Funeral Home.

Katherine Delores Sterry Davis

Funeral services for Dolores Sterry Davis, 79, of Sugar Land, are scheduled for 2 p. m. today at the Christ Episcopal Church of Matagorda County with the Rev. Karl Choate officiating. Burial will follow in Matagorda Cemetery.

Mrs. Davis was born May 5, 1914, in Matagorda to James Edward and Daisy Ione Flornoey Sterry and died April 17, 1994, in Fort Bent Community Hospital.

Survivors include a son, W. Jeff Davis of Sugar Land and two grandchildren, Audray Jade and Jared Sean Davis.

She was preceded in death by her husband, T. Jeff Davis in 1973, four brothers and a sister.

Pallbearers are Jarad Davis, Duane Sterry, Dean Crittendon, Mike Sterry, Bobby Sterry and Chris Sterry.

Honorary pallbearers are Norman Brown and Paul Eidelbach.

Services are under the direction of Dick R. Elkins, Bay City Funeral Home of Bay City.

Barbara Allen Ryman Degnan
September 16, 1918 - June 16, 2017

Barbara Allen Ryman Degnan, age 98, of Proctor, Texas passed away June 16, 2017 at Senior Care Nursing in Stephenville, Texas.  Barbara was born in Matagorda, Texas on September 16, 1918 to James Nye and Sunshine (Dickinson) Ryman. She was the third of three children.

The family moved to Houston when Barbara was a young child where she attended Allen Elementary, Johnson Junior, and San Jacinto High Schools.  She then attended Rice University, graduating with her BA in English in 1940.

In 1941, Barbara married James (Jim) Haines Degnan, a naval officer and fellow Rice graduate, at St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Houston.  Following Jim’s service during WW2, he went to work for U.S. Steel. During their marriage, U.S. Steel took them to Oklahoma City, Pittsburgh, Houston and Tulsa.  Several years After Jim’s death in 1993, Barbara moved to a country setting in Comanche County, Texas to live on a family ranch.

Barbara was a strong Christian. She was a charter member of St. Luke’s Methodist Church in Houston and was affiliated with Berachah Bible Church in Houston for many years. She was a member and officer of the Hill Country Chapter of the DRT for over 15 years.  Barbara was also a loyal member of the Blue Bird Society of Houston for 76 years. 

Barbara’s passions were her family and friends.  Everywhere she lived and visited, she made many friends and kept up with many of them all her life.  She made great efforts to keep up with many of her extended family members.  She also enjoyed cooking and had a wonderful gift of hospitality.

She is survived by her three children:  Nancy Graham Davis, James Nye Degnan and Mary Sargent Ames; seven grandchildren: Warren Davis, Martha Davis, David Degnan, Amy Seely, Hunter Ames, Carrie Ames and Nathanael Ames; two great-grandchildren and one niece, Judy Holmes.  

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, brother Eldridge and sister Virginia and one grandson, Harris Degnan.

Barbara requested a small, private service. At a future date, family and friends will gather at the historical Matagorda Cemetery for an informal ceremony where Barbara’s ashes will be buried beside her husband.

The family would like to thank the staff at Senior Care Nursing and Universal Hospice for the amazing and caring service they provided during the last days of Barbara’s life.

Dorothy Lois Deshotels
June 11, 1920 - October 25, 2015

Dorothy Lois Deshotels, 95, died October 25, 2015, in Bay City, Texas. 

She was born June 11, 1920, in Gulf, Texas, to Jesse Douglas and Amanda Maude Cammack Deshotels.

Lois grew up in Gulf, Texas, and graduated from Gulf High School, at the age of 16.  She was very athletic, enjoying basketball, but also loved outdoor sports throughout her life, especially golf, hunting and fishing.  She attended the University of Texas and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business, in 1940.  She went to work for Humble Oil Company, and over the years, earned promotions to a top Human Resources executive position, with what became Exxon Corporation.  She retired at age 55, and went back to school, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physics from the University of Houston, in 1980.  She went to work at NASA for the Singer Link Company, in the space shuttle simulator program. 

In 1987, Lois retired again, at which time she moved to Bay City, and immersed herself in the community.  She became highly involved in the Bay City Country Club and Ladies Golf Association, the Bay City Library, the Matagorda County Museum, the Matagorda County Birding Nature Center, and the Book Review Club.  Lois’ organizational skills quickly made her a sought after member, who could help any organization “get the job done.”

Survivors include two nieces, Annette Eicke and Janet Green Shanks (Jack); three nephews,  Allen Green (Camille), George Deshotels (Mary Anna), and Gary Green (Linda);  five great-nieces,  Leigh Anna Eicke (Paul Murphy), Clara Leigh Bujnoch (Jason), Janis Shanks, Laura Comeaux (Wayne), and Erin Stone (Chance);  five great-nephews,  Jason Eicke (Alisa), Jesse Deshotels (Lindsay), Jonathan Shanks, Justin Shanks (Sarah), and Eric Shanks (Kate); and numerous great, great-nieces and nephews. 

Lois was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Evelyn Deshotels Green; brother, J. D. Deshotels Jr.; sister-in-law, Joe Faye Deshotels; nephew, Doug Deshotels; and nephew-in-law, Ret. Col. George Eicke.

Lois was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Bay City, Texas. 

The funeral service will be held at St. Mark’s at 2 p.m., on Thursday, October 29, 2015, with the Rev. Brad Sullivan officiating. 

Interment will follow at Matagorda Cemetery in Matagorda, Texas.

Pallbearers are Justin Shanks, Jonathan Shanks, Jesse Deshotels, Bill Cornelius, Jim Poux, and Wayne Comeaux.

Memorials may be made to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 2200 Avenue E, Bay City, Texas 77414.

Jesse Douglas Deshotels

Funeral services will be held for Jesse Douglas Deshotels, 86, of Matagorda, 2 p. m. Saturday at the Christ Episcopal Church in Matagorda.

Officiating at the services will be the Rev. Jack Lowery.

Deshotels died January 14, 1982 at Matagorda General Hospital.

Survivors are wife, Mrs. Joe Faye Raymond Deshotels of Matagorda; daughter and son-in-law, Annette and Major Geroge Eicke of Harker Heights; sons and daughters-in-law, Jesse Douglas Deshotels III and George and Mary Anna Deshotels of Matagorda; sister, Lois Deshotels of Houston; 4 grandchildren.

Deshotels was retired from Exxon Corp. after 40 years in the industrial gas service division.

Burial will follow services at the Matagorda Cemetery.

Pallbearers include Billy Ray Goins, Burley Gill, Gill Ottis, Bill Russell, Walter Biesel and Gayle Hanzik.

Honorary pallbearers are Tommy Countz, Gene Litchfield, Davant Sterry, Ronald Hanzik, Murray and Savage Watkins, J. F. Williams, James Lee, Ray Culver and Charles Lassiter.

Jesse Douglas Deshotels III

Funeral services for Jesse Douglas Deshotels III, 49, of Matagorda were to be held 2 p. m. Saturday at Christ Episcopal Church in Matagorda with the Rev. Herb Willke officiating. Burial was to follow at Matagorda Cemetery.

The son of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Douglas Deshotels Jr., Mr. Deshotels was born March 10, 1941, in Houston and died Dec. 28, 1990, at Matagorda General Hospital.

He is a former resident of Beaumont where he attended high school. He graduated from Texas A&M University in 1963, was a member of Ducks Unlimited, the Matagorda Volunteer Fire Department, Matagorda A&M Club and was a resident of Matagorda for 10 years.

Survivors include: mother, Joe Faye Deshotels, of Matagorda; one sister, and brother-in-law, Annette and Col. George D. Eicke, of Alexandria, VA; one brother, and sister-in-law, George and Mary Anna Deshotels, of Matagorda; two nieces and two nephews.

Pallbearers included: Tommy Countz, David Allen, David Sterling, E. C. Suggs, Wayne Yeamans and Francis Butter.

Honorary pallbearers included: Joe Smith, Jack Thompson, Carman Holzaepfel and John Risinger.

Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home, Bay City.

Joe Faye Deshotels

(January 19, 1920 - July 20, 2015)

Joe Faye Deshotels passed away in Bay City, TX on July 20, 2015 at the age of 95.

She was preceded in death by her parents George and Amanda Yeamans Raymond; her brothers Jack and Thomas Raymond; sister Alyne Cox; her husband J.D. Deshotels, her son Doug Deshotels, and her son-in-law George Eicke.

Joe Faye was born January 19, 1920 in Matagorda, Texas, a sixth generation Texan. She grew up in Matagorda, Old Gulf and New Gulf. She graduated from Boling High School and attended Southwest Texas State Teacher’s College.

She married J.D. Deshotels in 1939 and moved often with her family, with his 40 year career with Humble Oil Company/Exxon. When J.D. retired they moved back to Matagorda.

Joe Faye was a world traveler and a member of many local and national organizations: A&M Mother’s Club, DAR, Matagorda Garden Club, Matagorda County Historical Commission and UDC.

She is survived by her daughter Annette Eicke of San Antonio; son George Deshotels (Mary Anna) of Matagorda. She is also survived by her Granddaughters Leigh Anna Eicke and husband Paul Murphy and Clara Bujnoch (Jason), Grandson Jason Eicke (Alisa), Jesse Deshotels (Lindsay), Five great-grandsons and three great-granddaughters. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Lois Deshotels, her nephews Raymond Cox, Allen and Gary Green and nieces Judy Cox and Janet Green.

The family would like to express thanks to Cody Holloway and the staff of Matagorda Nursing and Rehab Center for the loving care given and especially Joe Faye’s friend Zia Miller. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Christ Episcopal Church in Matagorda, TX or the Matagorda Cemetery Association.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm Thursday, July 23, 2015 at Christ Episcopal Church in Matagorda with Hoss Gwin officiating. Interment will follow at Matagorda Cemetery.
