Mr. Ernest Eugene Calhoun, who passed away at the Gulf Hospital on Jan. 25, 1935 from apoplexy, was born in Oklahoma, June 30, 1882. His father, James Calhoun, was born in Mississippi and his mother, Mrs. Adaline Biggers Calhoun was a native of Texas. Mr. Calhoun has been a resident of Texas for some time and has lived in Matagorda for eight years. He was ill for only a very short time and the remains were prepared for burial by the Duffy Undertaking Company and interred in the Matagorda Cemetery Saturday, Jan. 26. Surviving are his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Mamie Gibson of Best, Texas and one son, Joe Earl Calhoun of Oklahoma and four grandchildren.

Guadalupe Garcia de Campas A Mexican woman from Newgulf who died from gun shot wounds self inflicted after two weeks of suffering, was buried in the Matagorda cemetery, Oct. 21. Her name was Guadalupe Garcia de Campas, age 34 years. She is survived by her husband John de Campos, one sister, four brothers and her mother. Bay City Herald, October 1938

Bertel Carlson Bertel Carlson, 73, died Monday, October 2, at his residence in Matagorda. He was born December 11, 1904 in Lyrestad, Sweden, was a member of the Indian Orchard Masonic Lodge, Springfield, Massachusetts and a Shriner of the Melha Temple, Springfield, Massachusetts. Survivors include a son, Bertel Carlson, Jr., of Houston, a daughter, Doris Carlson of Delmar, New York, brothers, Gunnar Carlson of Matagorda, Axel and Allen Carlson of Sweden, sisters, Hulda Vikgres, Christine Swenson, Anna Strom, Ingeborg Hogstrom and Agnes Backebohl of Sweden. Graveside services will be held Thursday, October 5, at 11:00 a. m. at the Matagorda Cemetery. Officiating will be Rev. Douglas Cadwallader. Interment at Matagorda Cemetery. Services under the direction of Dick R. Elkins, Bay City Funeral Home.

Funeral services for William Malcum Carmichael, 67, of Matagorda are scheduled for 2 p. m. Tuesday at the Christ Episcopal Church of Matagorda with Rev. Jack Lowery officiating. Interment will be in Matagorda Cemetery. Carmichael was born Oct. 14, 1914 in Gonzales. Survivors include: a daughter, Mary D. Fortenberry of Matagorda; two sons, Carl L. Carmichael of South Carolina and William M. Carmichael, Jr. of Matagorda; one sister, Evelyn L. Russell of Georgia; one brother, H. D. Carmichael of California. He also leaves seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Carmichael. Carmichael was a resident of Matagorda for the past 50 years. He was a veteran of WWII and a member and a Past Master of Masonic Lodge No. 7. He was a member and a past treasurer, from 1949 to 1979 of the Christ Episcopal Church.

Mrs. Gregoria Castillo and Miss Dora Garcia, both of Gulf, were buried at Matagorda Monday afternoon under the direction of the Duffy Undertaking Company of Matagorda, assisted by the Walker-Matchett Company, of this city. Mrs. Castillo’s death followed an illness of some length. Miss Garcia, age 21, died a victim of tuberculosis. The floral offerings were beautiful and many and the ceremonies were attended by a large number of friends and acquaintances. The parents, brothers and sisters of Miss Garcia request the Tribune to extend their sincerest thanks to all those who administered to them during the illness and for their words of sympathy. Also, they are grateful for the floral offerings.

Memorial services for Mrs. C. C. Cates, Sr., of Bay City, Texas were held at 4 o’clock Oct. 27 in St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. She was the widow of C. C. Cates, Sr., of Tiptonville. She was the former Helen Kilbride, eldest daughter of Ann Elizabeth and Edward John Kilbride of Matagorda County, Texas. The Kilbrides were a prominent Bay City family. She was born May 25, 1895, at “Tanglewilde,” the plantation home of her grandparents, Col. and Mrs. John Francis Holt. Col. Holt helped bury the dead after the battle of Island No. 10 at Tiptonville and walked all the way to his home in Texas after hostilities ceased in the War Between the States. “Miss Helen” leaves two children, C. C. Cates, Jr., of Tiptonville and Mrs. Helen “Boo” Coe of Bay City; five grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Norman Barkley and Mrs. Weldon Smith of Bay City. Mrs. Cates was educated at Mulholland School for Girls, San Antonio, and later attended Bristol College in Washington, D. C. She was wed to Charles Craig Cates of Tiptonville on Aug. 25, 1915, and they made their home there for several years. She was one of the founders of the Tiptonville Public Library. In Bay City, her home for many years, she was loved by young and old. Following the death of her husband in 1933, Mrs. Cates was a caseworker for the Matagorda County Welfare Department. She later served 12 years as treasurer of Matagorda County, serving unopposed. Services were conducted Sunday afternoon by the Rev. Aubrey Maxted and the Rev. Milton E. McWilliams. Interment was in Matagorda Cemetery at 4 Monday afternoon. Pallbearers were Ted Doubek, Melvin Blum, William Penny, Courtney Grover, Albert Wadsworth, Jr., and Gibbens Corbett. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Sam Sholars, Albert Wadsworth, J. C. Lewis, Rowland Rugeley, Guy Smith, T. J. Poole, Carroll Gaines, Robert Rockwood, P. E. Pearison, R. M. Dorst, John M. Moore, V. H. Patricia, the 7 months old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Craig Cates of Tiptonville, Tenn., died at the home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Kilbride, in this city, Wednesday night and was buried in the family burying grounds at Matagorda Thursday afternoon. The little one had been ill for practically all of her brief life and every means known had been exhausted in her behalf, but to no purpose. Mrs. Cates, the mother, was Miss Helen Kilbride, whose friends are legion. She and the family have the sympathy of everyone.
