Arthur Cleveland Bruce Arthur Cleveland Bruce
October 28, 1921 Mr. Arthur Cleveland Bruce, a long time resident of the town of Matagorda, passed away at his home in Matagorda October 11, 1921, at the ripe age of 83 years, 8 months and 20 days.
Mr. Bruce was born on the west side of the Colorado River in this county, Jan. 24, 1838, and when war was declared between the states, he volunteered and was in Company D, 6th Texas Infantry.
He was first lieutenant and color bearer and on one occasion his life was saved by a pair of boots that he had captured from the enemy the previous day and he immediately donned them.
The next day his feet were so blistered he was sent behind the lines to recuperate and the flag bearer, taking his place, was hit in the forehead with a bullet and immediately killed.
At another time, in the battle of Chickamauga, the enemy seemed to take the flag for its target and Mr. Bruce has laughingly related many times how he reversed it, putting the flag down and the staff up.
He served the South faithfully until sent home on furlough and the war closed during that period.
In 1866 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Smith, also a native of this county, and there were eight children, six of them and his widow surviving. They are Mrs. Thos. Kain, Mrs. G. B. Culver, Mrs. J. B. Hawkins and C. A. Bruce of this place; Mrs. J. J. Funk of San Marcos and Gene Bruce of Palacios. There are also a number of grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. He and the late C. D. Bruce were brothers.
Mr. Bruce was a gentleman of the "old school," quiet and unassuming, "a friend to all and enemy to none" and always had a pleasant word for everyone, consequently he will be greatly missed by all his friends in his home town.
He as a member of the Baptist Church and attended services whenever able. Of late years he has been continually in poor health and even though his death was expected his family are none the less grieved and their friends sympathize with them in their bereavement.

Matagorda, Texas, Oct. 15.—On August 15, 1921, Mrs. Margaret J. Bruce, a life long resident of this county, departed this life at her home here after an illness of intense suffering lasting for several months, at the age of 72 years, 6 months and 15 days. The following morning the remains were laid to rest by the side of her husband who preceded her to the grave eleven years ago, and for whom she had never ceased to mourn. Mrs. Bruce was born at Tres Palacios, Matagorda County, January 30, 1849, and was one of three daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Horace Yeamans. Her parents were of the Baptist faith and early in life she also united with that church and was a consistent and earnest worker in the Master’s vineyard for many, many years, until just a short time ago, when ill health compelled her to give up active religious work. She was married in 1873 to Mr. Charles D. Bruce, a prominent stockman of the county and they [built their ranch house at ___] Creek for several years. While there, two sons came to bless this union; they are Jas. A. Bruce of Bay City and Frank C. of Balmorhea, Texas. They, with five grandchildren, survive her, also three brothers, Messrs. Horace and Benjamin Yeamans of this county and Daniel Yeamans of San Antonio, and one sister, Mrs. Chas. Smith of Bay City. When the boys were small, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce took up their abode in town and have resided here ever since. It was then that she took advantage of the opportunities offered her for doing for “Him who died to save us all.” She agitated a Baptist Church building until finally by her persistence and untiring efforts, the old I. O. O. F. hall building was purchased and converted into a church. In this edifice she immediately organized a Sabbath School and was superintendent, organist, secretary, treasurer and, in fact, the power that kept a live Sunday School progressing. Many relatives and friends gathered at her home to look their last of this life on “Aunt Mag,” a term of affection used by most all who knew her. Rev. Mr. Herndon of Bay City officiated at the funeral and after a brief tribute to her memory Rev. Granville Storey offered a sweet prayer over the casket. By her own request, “The Home of My Soul” and “Asleep in Jesus” were sung and at the grave as the tired body was laid to rest the temporary choir sang “Jesus Lover of My Soul.” The beautiful floral contributions that adorned the grave was an emblem of the beautiful life of this noble Christian character. “Well done, good and faithful servant, enter thou into the joys of thy Lord.”—Written by one who loved and esteemed her.
