In memory of Rose Baxter who departed this life December 11, 1928. She was born September 20, 1899, in Wharton county, being the second daughter of Mr. G. A. and Mrs. Addie Sexton. On June 18, 1924, she was married to G. Collins Baxter, of Matagorda, where they made their home. During the four short years of married life they were a most devoted couple. A little son, who was much desired, was born on Thanksgiving day, and preceded her to the Glory World just twelve days. During her serious illness of fifteen days she was said to be the bravest patient ever having been in the hospital, never complaining, no matter how much she suffered. She won the hearts of all the nurses by their gentleness and patience. Her death bed scene was most touching, she first praying, then asked for a special prayer which was granted, and with a smile and words of comfort to her faithful mother and husband, said, “I am all right, don’t grieve for me,” closed her eyes in sleep to awake in a new world. The sympathy of all friends goes out to the bereaved ones, especially to her devoted husband who was never heard to speak an unkind word to her. He has lost his all and feels desolated, but for the hope that knows no sorrow. May the Lord comfort his aching heart. Mrs. Baxter’s father preceded her in death six years ago. He was a resident of Wharton. He had been chief of the fire department from its organization and each year the fire bell tolls in his memory. Her mother, Mrs. Burston, and a brother, Walter Sexton, live in Wharton, and two sisters, Mrs. Frank Harris, of Houston, and Mrs. Cleveland, of Glen Flora. In the historic and interesting old cemetery at Matagorda, which has occupied a prominent place on the bluff overlooking Matagorda bay and about one mile east of Matagorda for a full century, perhaps, there was found just the other day, eighteen inches under the surface, a headstone bearing a perfectly legible engraving as follows. “Sacred to the memory of Benjamin Beal, son of the late Captain R. C. Beal of Quincy, Massachusetts, who died August 15th, 1832, aged 26. To his affectionate mother and surviving sisters the loss is irreparable. The only earthly consolation they can have must be found in the remembrance of his distinguished virtues, his Christian benevolence, and life altogether irreproachable.” In sending in this interesting item to the Tribune, our good friend, W. G. Thornhill, Sr., says: “The above headstone was unearthed a few days ago in the Matagorda, Texas, cemetery, under about 18 inches of dirt. Am sending you the news in hopes it may be the means of someone finding the last resting place of a loved one. A copy of this is sent to the postmaster at Quincy, Massachusetts.” There is the foundation or ground work for many an interesting article in that old cemetery, perhaps the oldest in continuous services in Texas. Matagorda County Tribune, July 20, 1926 Benjamin Beale, of New York, formerly of Boston, d. in Matagorda, Tex., 16th Aug [1832], aged 26, Columbian Centinel, September 26, 1832

Matagorda, Texas, Mar. 27.—March 11, 1924, at 8 o’clock p. m., Mrs. Amelia Bedford, from an illness of three years, caused by a paralytic stroke, passed away, after intense suffering at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. H. P. Baxter, at the age of 69 years, 3 months and 29 days. She was a life-long resident of Matagorda as, also, was her husband, George Bedford, who preceded her to the grave many years ago. She was of the Episcopal faith and worshipped all her life in Christ Church here, which has the distinction of being the Mother Episcopal Church of Texas. Surviving her are two sons, W. E. and George Bedford, and two daughters, Mrs. Henry Baxter, the three above of Matagorda, and Mrs. Jessie Martin of Victoria, all being at her bedside when the end came. There are also six grandchildren. Rev. G. T. Storey of Bay City impressively officiated at the funeral and a large number of friends followed the hearse to the cemetery where the body was laid to rest near her daughter, Mrs. Kate Connaly who was buried there only six short weeks previous and whose death, no doubt, hastened that of her mother who craved to go saying repeatedly that she was “full ready and only waiting.” There in, her native soil her loved ones left her lying beneath lovely roses and other flowers sent in by friends of the family. Her children have the deep sympathy of their friends in their great loss and especially to her son, George Bedford, who was truly a devoted son to his equally devoted mother, and her going has left an empty place in his life that can never be filled.
