Funeral services for Mr. Paul Batties, age 49, of Bay City, will be held Sunday, August 25, 1996, at 1 p. m., at Jesus Free Will Holy Temple Church in Bay City, with Bishop J. Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Markham Cemetery in Markham. Visitation will be Saturday until 9 p. m. in the chapel of Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home. Batties was born in Markham, Texas, Wednesday, August 6, 1947, to Irvin Batties and Menervia Ferrell Batties, and passed away Sunday, August 18, 1996, in Bay City, Texas. Survivors include four daughters, Tonaka Batties, Rhonda Phillips, Iona Preston and Chenikka Phillips, all of Bay City; and two sons, Paul Batties, Jr. of Bay City, and LaQuincey Earl Phillips of Elizabeth, Louisiana. Also three sisters, Mrs. Christine Johnson of Bay City, Mrs. Daisy Anderson of Egypt and Mrs. Alzenia Bullard of El Campo; and three brothers and one sister-in-law, Lawrence Batties, Johnnie L. Batties and Johnnie B. Batties (& Gladys), all of Bay City. Also one brother-in-law, W. J. Whalon of Hungerford. He leaves four grandchildren, K. C. Preston, Tia LaRon E. Breaux, JaMichael Blackmon and LaQuincy Earl Phillips, Jr., and a very dear friend, Mary Phillips of Bay City. Also one aunt, Mrs. Betsy Richardson of Egypt, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and a family of many friends. Beside his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Vivian Brown Whalon and Mary Alice Brown Barnes. Active pallbearers will include Cecil Brown, Kenneth Whalon, Felt Brown, Calvin Barnes, Larry Rutherford and Roy Williams. Honorary pallbearers will include Johnnie B. Batties, Johnnie L. Paul Batties In the year of 1947, Wednesday, August 6th, a baby boy was born to Irving and Menervia Ferrell Batties, whom they named, Paul Batties. He grew up in Markham, Texas, and attended Public School in El Maton, Texas. The Lord in His infinite wisdom and for His own purpose, called Paul Batties home on Sunday, August 18, 1996, to be with Him. By his passing, he leaves many loving memories to his four daughters, Tonaka Batties, Rhonda Phillips, Iona Preston and Chenikka Phillips, all of Bay City; and two sons, Paul Batties, Jr. of Bay City, and LaQuincy Earl Phillips of Elizabeth, Louisiana. Visitation will be until 9 p. m. Sunday at Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home and from noon to 1 p. m. Monday at the church. Mrs. Blackmon was born Jan. 11, 1923, in Markham to Wiley and Elizabeth Dillingham Henry and died Dec. 24, 1986, at M. D. Anderson Hospital, Houston. She was a member of the Baptist church, Progressive Order of Pilgrims and the Order of Eastern Star. Survivors include her husband, William Blackmon of Markham; three daughters, Mildred Allen of Markham, Irma Thomas and Georgia Blackmon, both of Bay City; a son, Clarence Blackmon of Houston; a sister, Jewell Brown of Houston; a brother, Burl Henry of Pomona, Calif.; and seven grandchildren. Pallbearers include Eddie Williams Jr., Freddie Eason Jr., Leon Sanford Jr., Sam Peters Jr., James Peters Jr., Roosevelt George and Elijah Barefield.
Arrangements are with Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home Bernice Henry Blackmon Born on January 11, 1923, to Wiley Henry and Elizabeth Dillingham Henry in Markham, Texas. Sister Bernice Blackmon was a wife, mother, grandmother, counselor, companion and friend. These were but a few of her many attributing characteristics. She was a gentle and charitable person, who, at an early age, accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior. Thus, she became an active member of the Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church family where she remained faithful until death. Actively involved in various aspects of the church, she served in the following positions at Pilgrim Rest: Sunday School Superintendent for twenty-six (26) years, Mission 1 President and teacher; Bible Band Assistant teacher, Adult Leader for the Baptist Training Union (BTU), and several church committees. She was also an active member in the Progressive Order of Pilgrims, the Eastern Star, the Independent Missionary Baptist General Association of Texas, and Director of both the Sunday School and BTU for the Matagorda County Federation of churches. As a living testimony of Philippians 4:14, her sincere belief was “I can do all things through Christ which strengthened me.“ Sister Blackmon will always be remembered for her wit, bright smile, vigor, and zest for the life. Most of all, her spiritual legacy will be forever endeared to all who knew her. She earnestly desired to please GOD. Therefore, if one knew and loved Sister Blackmon, know and love her God. Sister Blackmon is survived by her husband, Deacon William Blackmon of Markham; three (3) daughters, Mildred Allen of Markham, Irma Thomas and Georgia Blackmon of Bay City; one son, Clarence Blackmon of Houston; eight (8) grandchildren, Robert Blackmon, Clarence Blackmon and Wilbert Mosley, all of Houston, LeTicia Tarra Allen of Markham, Benita Faye Culbreath, Terra Thomas, Synovia and Nada Blackmon of Bay City; one adopted son, John Marcellius Parr. One sister, Jewell Brown of Houston and one brother, Burl James Henry of Pomona, California; one devoted son-in-law, Larry Thomas of Bay City, and daughter-in-law Eunice Blackmon of Houston. On December 28, 1902, a baby boy was born to Jesse and Nannie Blackmon whom they called Ray (Ira). Ray was raised in a Christian home, and confessed Christ at the Baptist Church in Sweet Home, Texas, under the leadership of Rev. Jesse Thomas. Later, he united with Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church, Markham, Texas. He passed away on Thursday, December 10, 1987. By his passing, he leaves two brothers, William Blackmon of Markham and Wilford Brazil of Yoakum. Five sisters, Mrs. L. E. Reddic of Markham, Mrs. Pearline Robinson of Houston, Mrs. Burt Webb of Blessing, Mrs. Lucy Farrow of Yoakum and Mrs. Katherine Grant of Sweet Home, Texas, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and a family of friends. Visitation is scheduled until 9 p. m. Tuesday at the Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home Chapel, and from noon until 1 p. m. Wednesday at Pilgrim Rest Baptist. Born in Sweet Home, Tex., on Friday, Aug. 7, 1914, Blackmon died Sunday, Aug. 24, 1997, at Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City. He was a member of the Pilgrim Rest Baptist, where he served as a deacon and held positions in various auxiliaries of the church. He operated an iron dealership. Blackmon is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, John Marcellus and Annie Lee Parr of Dallas and Clarence L. Blackmon and Eunice of Houston; three daughters, Mrs. Mildred G. Blackmon Allen of Markham, Ms. Georgia B. Blackmon and Mrs. Irma F. Blackmon, both of Bay City; nine grandchildren, Robert L. Blackmon, Vivian Y. Robinson, LeTicia T. Allen, Clarence L. Blackmon Jr., Wilbert L. Mosley, Tera C. Thomas Bingley, Benita F. Culbreath Scott, Synovia D. Blackmon and Nada E. Blackmon Franklin; three great-grandchildren, Benjamin J. Scott IV, Benita F. C. Alston and Jacorey Bingley; and three sisters, Mrs. L. E. Reddic of Danevang, Mrs. Pearline Robinson of Houston and Mrs. Katherine Grant of Sweet Home. He also leaves seven godchildren, Shirley Brown Smith, Harold Smith, Moses Smith, III, Timothy Smith, Kimberly Smith, and Irene and Martin Cruz. Dedicated friends include Howard Harper, Ned Brooks Jr., Jesse Lee Flag and Larry Thomas. In addition to his parents, Blackmon was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice Henry Blackmon, two daughters, Nada L. Blackmon Williams and Julia M. Blackmon, one son, Wilbert L. William attended school in Yoakum, Texas. He accepted Christ at an early age at the Corinth Baptist Church in Sweet Home, Texas. On February 23, 1941, he was united in marriage to Miss Bernice Henry and was blessed with seven lovely children. They resided in Markham, Texas and as a family they attended Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church of Markham. Under the leadership of Rev. H. T. Aldridge, he became a Deacon in 1952. He remained a loyal and faithful member of Pilgrim Rest until God called him home. He was a self-employed, hard working, family man who provided for his family with no complaints. When his health began to fail him, he remained faithful to God. Encouraging his family and friends, he never complained and always knew that God would keep him and help his family to understand. He departed this life on August 24, 1997, at Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City, Texas. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 45 years, Bernice Henry Blackmon, two daughters, Nada L. Blackmon-Williams and Julia M. Blackmon, one son, Wilbert L. Blackmon and one grandchild, Fredrika Williams. His memories will be cherished by his loving children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives and friends. On August 17, 1914, a son was born, William Blackmon,
to Nannie Freeland Blackmon and Richmond Brazil in Sweet Home, Texas. He
grew up in the community of his birth. He shared his upbringing with
relatives and friends.
