In 1919, the Matagorda
ISD voted to begin school operations at Gulf. Two board members
were elected from Gulf on July 14, 1919 and the first teachers
were elected on July 21, 1919. The school board
voted
to have High School at Gulf and Elementary School at Matagorda on March
13, 1922, but later hirings indicate primary grades were held at
Gulf. By September 1925, a school for Gulf Mexican students was
in operation. On June 15, 1928, the Matagorda ISD school board
voted to allow Wadsworth students the opportunity to attend Gulf
High School. TGS ceased production in "Old" Gulf and moved
operations to Newgulf, which brought necessary reductions in
finances in 1932. The last students graduated from Gulf High
School in 1938 and high school students were transferred to Bay
City ISD in subsequent years. |
