Pvt. Therlo George Smith, Jr., whose father lives in Liberty was reported missing in action in Korea last week. Private Smith, who has been in service since February, was sounded in August. After being hospitalized for a short time, however, he was able to go back to the front lines with his infantry unit. Provate Smith’s father served two years overseas during World War II

Therlo George L. Smith, 19, whose parents live at 445 Market has been reported missing in action in Korea. Telegrams received by his mother, Mrs. Emma Lou Clough, say he has been missing since September 29. Pfc. Smith was an infantryman with Company G, 9th infantry regiment. He went into the army March 13, first to Fort Lewis and then for training in Hawaii. He was sent to Korea in July. His mother said she heard from him only twice after he went to the Far East. The family lived in Salem before coming to Klamath Falls recently. In addition to his mother and stepfather, Smith’s youngest sister Bernice Clough, 7 lived here. A brother, Cecil Smith, and two sisters, Mrs. Marjorie Lucille Sparks and Mrs. Anna May James, live in Texas.

Therlo George L. Smith, 19 –year-old infantryman from Klamath Falls, has been officially reported as dead by the department of defense, according to word received here by his mother, Mrs. Emma Lou Clough, last night. Smith has been reported missing in action in Korea since September 29. His home was at 445 Market. Smith, a private first class, was attached to company G, 9th infantry regiment. He had been in the army since March 13, and had undergone training in Hawaii. He was sent to Korea in July. His mother said she had heard from him only twice since he had been in the Orient.

Pfc. Therlo Smith, killed in action in Korea, will be buried tomorrow (Friday) afternoon in Fairlawn Cemetery. The body was scheduled to arrive today (Thursday). The funeral will be held in the Pace-Stancil Funeral Chapel. Mr. B. J. Mikulek, pastor of the Dayton Assembly of God Church, officiating. A burial detail from Ellington Field will conduct the graveside service. Reported missing in action, Pfc. Smith was serving with an infantry unit. He had been in the armed services since February 1951 and was wounded last August. Survivors are his father, Therlo Smith, Liberty; mother, Mrs. Emma Claugh [Clough], Oregon, Two sisters, Mrs. Lucille Sparks, Galveston and Mrs. Annie Mae James, Liberty, and one brother, Cecil Smith, Liberty

Mrs. Emma L. Clough, 1811 Cross St., Monday received a Purple Heart from the Army for her son, Pherlo [Therlo] G. L. smith, who was killed in action September 29 in Korea. Smith served with the Infantry and had previously been awarded the Silver Star.
