Word was received here this week from the War Department informing the family of Pvt. John Albert Miska that he was killed in action in Sicily on September 16. Private Miska was born August 29, 1921, and was the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Miska, of this city. He was inducted last November, spent three months in Camp Roberts and one month at Camp Pickett, then went across and had been on the firing line only a month. Before entering the service he was an employee of the Phenix Dairy here in Palacios. Besides his parents he is survived by his wife, Mrs. Bertha Miska, and young son, John Miska the third; one sister, Miss Ann Miska, and four brothers, Frank, of Bay City, Joe, of Wharton, Emil, somewhere in North Africa and Henry at Camp Bowie.
Requiem mass will be
said for Private Miska at St. Anthony's Church here Friday morning
at eight o'clock by Rev. H. L. Bauman.

Messrs. Eli Mayfield, Winfred Johnson, Roddin Purswell, Dugan Gibson, Charley McConnell, Elton Moorehead, Jess Munds, R. V. Wratislaw, O. W. Fegett, Glen Dale Claybourn and Alton Queen, members of the local V. F. W. Post and V. K. Jordan, of the Galveston V. F. W. Post were in Bay City Tuesday to meet and escort the body of John Albert Miska to Taylor Brothers Funeral Home, where it lay in state until Thursday morning when funeral services will be held in Blessing Catholic church, Father V. J. Billy officiating. The Veterans of Foreign War burial service will be held in the Catholic cemetery with the firing squad and color bearers of the Lt. Wm. Lloyd Queen Post No. 2467 in charge. John Albert Miska, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Miska of this city, was killed September 16, 1943 in the Sicilian campaign. Besides his parents he is survived by one son, John, Jr., Old Ocean, one sister, Miss Ann Miska, Palacios, four brothers, Joe, Emil and Andrew of Wharton, and Frank of Bay City.

Reburial services for John Albert Miska, 22 years 17 days, who was killed September 16, 1943 in the Sicilian campaign, will be held in Blessing Thursday morning at 9 o'clock. The body will arrive in Bay City Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. Rosary will be said at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home at 8 p.m. Tuesday and again Wednesday at the same hour. Funeral services will be held at the Blessing Cemetery [St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery] with Rev. Father Bily officiating. Taylor Bros. will be in charge of the services.

Services at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Blessing have been scheduled for Joseph Anton Miska, 77, who died Sunday at the hospital in El Campo. Mr. Miska had been a resident of the Czechoslovakian Catholic Home in Hillje and was a member of the KJT. Rosary was scheduled at 8 p.m. Sunday and Monday at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home and mass will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Blessing, the Rev. Joe Hamala officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Survivors include one daughter, Miss Ann Miska of Bay City; four sons, Joe Miska, Jr. and Emil of Wharton, Frank Miska of Bay City and Henry Miska of Houston; five sisters, Mrs. Henry Walzell of East Bernard, Mrs. Mary Boyer of South Carolina, Mrs. Olga Knebel of Weimer, Mrs. Raymond Kolcel and Mrs. Ernest Pavlik; two brothers, Frank and Charlie Miska of Weimar and nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren. Funeral service for Mrs. Mary Miska, 67 years, 2 months and 17 days, was held from the Catholic church in Palacios, Texas, January 16th, 1951, at 9:00 a.m., with Father Bily and Father Till officiating. Mrs. Miska is survived by her husband, J. A. Miska, of Palacios, Texas; one daughter, Miss Ann Miska of Palacios, four sons, Joe and Emil Miska of Palacios, Frank Miska of Bay City, Henry Miska of Houston, four sisters, Mrs. Frances Kana of El Campo, Mrs. Barbara Miska of Edna, Mrs. Antonio Haydosky of Holman, Mrs. Louise Horak of Needville; one brother, Joe Muzny of Needville. Interment was in the Catholic Cemetery at Blessing with Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in charge. Bertha was raised and attended school in Matagorda county. She was married to John Miska, Sr., in 1942, and he passed away in 1943, in Sicily, during World War II, as a part of Patton’s Army. Later, in 1945, she married Donald VonderAu Sr. Together, they owned and operated Wharton Steam Laundry for many years. He preceded her in death in 1977. Bertha and Donald enjoyed fishing and would fish anywhere and at any time, but mostly in Matagorda and Palacios. She and Donald were in several bowling leagues over the years, and accumulated many trophies. She was also an awesome cook and baker, making meals for friends and family alike. In addition to her parents, and her husbands, she was preceded in death by her sons, Donald “Phil” VonderAu Jr., and Marty VonderAu, grandson, Jason Miska, sisters, Lena Hill, Johnnie Mae Meyers, Della Schnieder and Lillie Bahuslav, and brothers, Johnny Jurek, Victor Jurek, Hubert Jurek, Eddie Jurek and Henry Jurek. Bertha is survived by her son, John Miska Jr., and wife, Patricia of Wharton; Daughter-in-law Velda VonderAu of Pierce; and grandchildren, Chris Miska, Carter Miska, Donald P. VonderAu III (Trey), and Rachel VonderAu Turner and husband, Jason; and her great grandchildren, Aubrey Miska Hamzehloo and husband, KJ, Kenneth Miska, Brian Miska, Theresa Miska, Sofie Marie Miska, Ashley Miska, Chloe Miska and Kaylie Miska, plus numerous nieces and nephews.

Bertha Rose VonderAu, 95, of Wharton passed away
at a Port Lavaca nursing center, following a lengthy illness, on
Saturday, August 15, 2020. She was born on November 29, 1924 in
Matagorda County, to the late Stephen and Liddie Karasek Jurek.
