KILLED IN ACTION

      Word was received here this week of the death of Sgt. Henry Lee McCullough, 25. He was killed in action in Luxembourg February 12. He had been in that theatre of war approximately two months.

      Sgt. Henry Lee McCullough was born March 16, 1920 in Morris Chapel, Tennessee. He came to Texas as a youth and attended school in Texas City and later in Bay City. He entered the service of his country in 1940 and was in the anti-aircraft three and a half years before he transferred to the infantry. He was married to the former Miss Vera Walker of Ashwood. He was formerly employed at the Bay City Veneer Mills.

      Surviving are his wife, his mother, Mrs. Floyd K. Allen, his grandmother, Mrs. H. L. Ashcraft, one brother, Charles, one aunt, Mrs. Virgil McCullough of Texas City and one uncle, Alex McCullough of Morris Chapel, Tennessee.

SGT. MCCULLOUGH AWARDED BRONZE STAR POSTHUMOUSLY

      From the War Department has come notice to Mrs. Vera McCullough of Ashwood, that her husband, Sgt. Henry L. McCullough in the Infantry was awarded the Bronze Star Medal posthumously. The Adjutant General, J. A. Ulio writes―

      “For heroic achievement in ― on 5 February 1945, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States. Previous attempts to cross the ― River had been defeated by enemy action and the swift current. On 5 February 1945, Sergeant McCullough, as a member of a reconnaissance patrol, crossed the river. Patrolling through ― and into the ―, they encountered, and after a sharp battle routed an enemy patrol. After thoroughly reconnoitering the enemy territory and acquiring valuable information Sergeant McCullough successfully returned across the river under intense enemy machine gun fire. His courage, aggressiveness and zealous devotion to duty contributed greatly in accomplishing a vital intelligence mission and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.

      “The decoration will be forwarded to the Commanding General, Eighth Service Command, Dallas, Texas, who will select an officer to make the presentation. The officer selected will communicate with you concerning your wishes in the matter.

      “May I again express my deepest sympathy to you in your bereavement”

Vera W. Walters
(March 27, 1921 - September 9, 2010)

Vera W. Walters, 89, of Friendswood passed away Thursday, September 9, 2010. She was born March 27, 1921 in Ashwood, Texas to the late George Washington & Mary B. Chastun Walker.

Vera is survived by her son: David L. McCullough & wife Delayne of Friendswood; sister: Lucille Turner of Conroe; 2 grandchildren: Tracy Head & husband Jeff and Laurie McCullough; and 4 great grandchildren: Mason McCullough, Tristan Benes, Taylor Head, and McKenna Head. Her parents and husbands: Henry Lee McCullough and Ruben Clifton “R. C.” Walters preceded Vera in death.

Visitation will begin 11:00 AM Sunday, September 12, 2010 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Sunday at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck. Pallbearers will be: Buddy, Bill, & Butch Bevers, John Fox, Jeff Head, and Dewayne Walker. Honorary pallbearers will be George and David Walker.
