Freon Gas Kills Navy Man

San Diego – Navy officials said an officer on the San Diego-based submarine USS McKee died after inhaling Freon gas while working in an air conditioning and refrigeration area of the ship. Wendy Bourland, a spokeswoman for the Naval Submarine Base, said an investigation was being conducted into the death Tuesday evening of Petty Officer 2nd Class Norman T. Holstein. Bourland said it was not known what Holstein was doing in the area or whether, Bourland said, the ship’s medical doctor and paramedics attempted to revive Holstein but that he was pronounced dead at 8 p. m. after being transported to Sharp Cabrillo Hospital. Bourland said Holstein, 23, was married and a native of Houston, Texas. She said he had been living in Chula Vista.
