PFC John L. Hebert United States Army 38594076 was born July 29, 1920 and  was killed while serving with the German Occupation January 28, 1946.

John Lee entered the service in the summer of 1943. He was sent to Europe and served with an Ordnance Battalion until the end of the war in Europe.

He was on Occupation duty when he was killed. PFC Hebert was returned home for reburial in the Palacios Cemetery.

He was the son of Sam and Lettie Hebert. Lettie died when John was a child. PFC Hebert, his father and step-mother, Violene, are buried at Palacios Cemetery, Palacios, Texas.

Reburial Services For John Lee Hebert To Be Held Here Friday

Reburial services will be held Friday, April 22, for Pfc. John Lee Hebert, who died on Luzon Island, January 28, 1946.

Private First Class Hebert enlisted in the service on January 17, 1945. He was born July 29, 1920.

Services will be held at the Pilgrim Rose Church at 3:00 P. M.

Re-Burial Services For Pfc. John Lee Hebert Held Here Friday

Stores were closed Friday afternoon and schools dismissed for the re-burial service of Pfc. John Lee Hebert.

Services were held at the Pilgrim Rose Baptist Church conducted by the pastor P. M. Mulkey after which the remains were taken to the Palacios cemetery where the Lt. Wm. Lloyd Queen Post Veterans of Foreign Wars conducted the regular burial service at the grave. A girls chorus from the Palacios Negro school sang.

We, the family of Sam Hebert, cannot express in words just how much we appreciate the kindness shown us in honoring our son, Pfc. John Lee Hebert, in his reburial service. Especially do we want to thank the VFW and our teachers for their program that was given in honor of our son, and Mrs. G. Sanford for the paper which was read. The words and kindness will never be forgotten, and may God bless every one who helped.

HEBERT

Lettie Hebert was born circa 1891 in Louisiana and married Sam Hebert circa 1908. The 1920 Matagorda County Census indicated she and Sam had four children, Henry D., 11; Lucile, 6; Lula M., 3; and Sam B., 1 month. The 1930 Matagorda Census also lists John (July 20, 1920 - January 28, 1946) and Crosby (October 14, 1922 - December 5, 1998). Sam and Violene Johnson  married February 4, 1926. Therefore, Lettie died sometime between October 14, 1922 and February 4, 1926. Lettie's burial location is unknown. There is no death record for her at the Matagorda County Courthouse and she is not recorded in the burials of Palacios Cemetery. The family was living in Collegeport January 1, 1920 and Palacios by April 1, 1930. The article on Violene Hebert indicates the family also lived in El Maton after WWII.

HEBERT

Sam Hebert, 85, of Palacios died Dec. 25 at the Wagner General Hospital in Palacios. He was a resident of Palacios and a member of the Baptist faith. Survivors include wife, Mrs. Violene Hebert of Palacios; sons, Earl Hebert of Dickinson and Crosby Hebert of San Antonio; sister, Mrs. Mary Rebector of Bay City; brother, Bennie Hebert of Houston. Funeral services will be held Dec. 29, Sunday, at 2 p.m. in the Pilgrim Rose Baptist Church in Palacios, with Rev. Samuel Tims officiating. Interment will be at the Palacios Cemetery.

HEBERT

Funeral services will be held for Mrs. Violene Hebert, 73, of Palacios, 2 p.m. Sunday at Pilgrim Rose Baptist Church of Palacios.

Hebert died October 12, 1981 at Wagner General Hospital.

Officiating at the services will be the Rev. M. L. Boone.

Survivors include sons, Samuel Hebert of Dickinson, Crosby Hebert of San Antonio and Perry Rose of Las Vegas; granddaughter, Mrs. Lydia M. Irving of Los Angeles; nieces, Mrs. Beatrice Haynes of Palacios and Mrs. Mildred Harper of San Francisco, Calif.; 9 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Burial will follow services at Palacios Cemetery.

Active pallbearers are Masonic brothers.

Visitation hours are from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home.

VFW Cites Violene Hebert

Violene Hebert will be among the Gold Star Mothers honored in a memorial service at the Palacios Cemetery Sunday June 8th. Queen-Hamlin Post 2467 Veterans of Foreign Wars and its Ladies Auxiliary will conduct the service. Hebert's son, John Lee, was killed while serving with the German Occupation January 28, 1946.

The Hebert family has resided in Matagorda County for more than 60 years. They lived in the El Maton area until after WWII when they moved to Palacios.

Sam Hebert, late husband of Violene, died December 25, 1974. Hebert presently resides at Leisure Lodge Nursing Home.
